If you knew anything about what you were talking about you would shut up and go back under the rock that spawned you. If you was to install Caldera Openlinux on your companies computers, and you want to use Lizard, then you will have to purchase a seperate cd for each computer (read your EULA) or else download the files from their ftp site and use the crappy installer that it has with it, which just went and defeat your whole arguement.
Is everyone on drugs? I could swear that it is offering the exact same menus that you would get if you were installing RH6.0 directly. So where did it make it easier? because you do it online?
...the stupidity of these mortals do delight the gods...
Actualy this is a good thing. NASA is very wasteful in their spending. They choose to continu using the SpaceShuttle even though the cost of doing so is constantly rising. Investing the money of one mission into creating a more efficient method would be better, but instead the organization is so bloated that plans take forever to get done. One idea that has alot of potential for launching small vehicles into orbit that NASA refuses to experiment with is the "slingshot" approach. Where you have a very powerfull device that can can launch a moderate sized space craft into orbit with minimum energy and a 100% reuse potential. But instead they rather keep beating the dead horse of the Shuttle. Another thing that is completly useless is spending money on manned flights. More data can be gained by using unmanned flights. And actually the missions that retrieve the most scientific data are the ones where no humans are on. The only reason that they continue to have manned missions is so that they can get all the media attention and increased funding.
So its a organisation that either needs to be seriously put in check. NASA is a joke in the eyes of the scientific community. They should be leading with AI and robotic research that can then be applied into intelligent space vehicles or probes that can accomplish tasks in hostile environments.
I think we are too obsesed with the "StarTrek and StarWars" idea of space travel, cause that is jsut an unrealistic fantasy right now. Robotic with AI is where space travel is going to be usefull for at least our liftime.
Maybe if there was a command line interface to the computer people won't be taking control of the ship and locking the crew from having access to certain things. When all you got is a gui, you limit yourself to whatever the maker of the gui decided to let you access.
why do you keep on posting crap about people not doing what you want? do you pay anyone of these guys for their time? i though so, then shut up and go back to playing your stupid games somewhere else.
well, i am glad i don't live in your perfect little world where people only do things "good enough" to make you happy, then move on to something else that you want.
Well, i don't know bout him, but a nice nested right/middle click contex menu could be used to perform actions based on specific file types, or on any file/files. This is not a simple feature to implement into a file manager or into a DE, but if done correctly, can be very powerful. and if it has a configurator where you can set up advanced options/features, you can have a pretty complex and powerful tool that removes most need to pop open a term
Sure you can release the code to game engines, but most game engines are usually obsolete within a year of release, and if the engine is good, other companies will pay for it. What may be nice is for the companies to release the source to the engine a few years after the product is no longer being sold or making money. Like what id does. But designing a game engine is always a race against time. you sometimes have to tos everything you did last month if you find a much more efficient way to do things, and sometimes you can't toss it out cause you are behind schedule, so you leave it for the next version of the game, but you may not be able to use it then either, cause hardware would have changed, and you would need to push it even more than you did this time. OSS just can't apply. Games are purly entertainment. if you want entertainment for free, then you are just being a cheap shit. Now don't get me wrong, i have nothing against people making a game engine or games and giving it away, hell, it will help alot of programmers understand how its done, and they can then play with the code and make cool stuff out of it. But when you look at the industry that these game companies operate in, its scary! they are always behind schedule to get the next "big thing" out there... why? well, cause everybody want the most textures, and frames per second that there brand new $(insert price) computer cost them.
Now some types of games like flightsims could be oss, but the problem with that is there arn't many folks who know about the physics of aerodynamics, and such things. and with alot of games, there is usually alot of stuff involved in the actuall engine that will make or break a good game.
So, don't start preaching from that tower as yet, seening source code does not mean better code. not always.
with them having that EULA in openlinux 2.2 which keeps you from making copies of the cd, or installing it on more than one computer... oh, you can make copies of the "non-system" software, but then you will have to seperate the files, put it on a ext2 filesystem and then use lisa to install it. which defeats the whole point of buying openlinux 2.2 in the first place because you bought it cause it was easy to install...
would it be possible to instead implement a dual cd-rw system, with a small ram disk? Where you can have the first cd-rw contain the file system, and if you need to make changes, you send it to the ram disk, and you have an automation program that does a sync on the second cd-rw every period (day/week, depends on your requirement)and then the system reboots it self, and switches over to the second cd-rw which was just burnt as the main filesystem. This could go on and on for a said period of useage. The only downside is that you will need two fast cd-rw drives, so that you can read from the cds at a fast rate. The only down side to this may be that you only have a limited number of writes on a cd-rw media until its no longer useable. so you will have to know that in advance, and schedule a maintance check on it. Also you will need some good error checking and redundancy, cause if you get a bad burn, your system may not come back up the next time.
there are alot of flaws in using a cd media for portable storage/playback. First of all the energy consumption will be pretty crazy, so unless you find a way to decrease the energy usage, or find a larger form of energy storage, you end up with a lemon that you have to carry loads of battery backups and a recharger unit to plug into anywhere you are to recharge. Second of all is the skip factor of such a unit. You will have to either design some new gyro-static device with lots of shock absorbing ability, which would cost alot to implement in a consumer unit. however if you are planning on putting a pretty large dynamic memory storage device in it, so that you can pre-buffer at least a few megs of mp3s and decode them so that you can read from the cd in bursts that can, that would be good for the anti-skipping, but would also increase the power consumption for each read burst, unless you find a perfect balance. Either way, the R&D of that design would cost any of those devices to start at ove $500, probably higher, unless the manufacturer is willing to take a short term profit hit in hope of building a large user base.
RedHat must be making a killing off of me, since i have started using it from 4.2 to the current 6.0. Wait a sec! i never paid a dime for it! Something must be wrong... Oh wait, i remember, i downloaded the files and burnt it to cd. Wow, poor RH i guess they didn't know i could "warez" their cool software. What? you mean it was free to download all this time? Okay... geez, i almost felt bad about it.
Do you see where i am taking this? I have never paid a cent for RH, and i don't plan on it either. Why? first of all, i don't particulary care to go out and buy shrink wrapped software, nor wait for stuff to be mailed to me. Plus i like to keep my cd updated by keeping a local image on my hard drive and updating it with new stuff. Plus its my choice. If you don't like RH, don't use their stuff.
Remember, its all about CHOICE...
oh, and i have downloaded everything by myself on my modem.
maybe if you took all those themes off of gtk, it won't be so slow. i have a puny p200mmx with 96 megs of ram. I use E+Gnome, and it moves pretty damn fast! you always have to make a tradeoff between "looks" and "speed". People say "E is slow" or "gtk is slow". but if you don't use flashy themes which contain a boat load of graphichs then you will realise that you are no longer running in the slow lane.
Another thing, if you looking to use linux as a server, why care about gtk? you want a fricking poitn and click interface to configure everything? well if that is the case, i do pity you...
dude, get off of your high horse. If i was working on soem project, and people saw me as the guy behind the project (for whatever reason). and they asked me a question on my opinion on a particular topic, what do you want me to do? call a fricking conference? shit, i will say what i believe. As long as what i say is correct, to hell with who gets burnt. Go ask linus to check his comments. Miguel did not appoint himself as "spokesman", the media did. If you don't like what he says, then don't listen to it.
I agree with you 100% (MS equivalent of 99.98%) Why do companies like VA Research in particular remain quiet when they have the most to lose since they actually sell linux boxes that come with quad processors and gigs of ram! look at this page: http://www.varesearch.com/products/VArServers.ht ml if those machines are going to be running linux, and at those prices, i don't think the price of an OS will matter much to a company who is buying hte box.
VA, if you guys are even reading this, don't just do a benchmark to refute MS, cause thats just petty. Step up to the plate (cause damn it, its hot right now) and tell people what your machines actualy can do! if it really can't do what you seem to be selling it to do, then you may as well pack up and go home, cause this is the real deal.
Well, i am sick of ranting right now, i got some stuff to do. my head hurts...
i was having a couple problems at first. the first time it stopped, i just ran it again, and then it stopped again a little further, and then i ran it again, then it finaly stoped on the editor. i can't remember the exact error, so i just ran configure again with the --disable-editor option, then ran it again, and it went without a hitch. actually Win2K was created in a stadium sized room packed with thousands of monkeys punching away at computers...
ask netscape...
:)
they say: its spelt "N-E-T-S-C-A-P-E" but pronunced as "Mozilla"
go figure...
also i think E checks for the Beers for you during compile... but i don'tdrink alcohol, so it never found any in my fridge
i hope

They are opening a Dallas office?!?
I wonder if it is possible for me to get a job with them.
I would do almost anything for it...
you are too stupid.
you want one theme that will work on Gnome and E at the same time? what have you been smoking? Do you even know what you are talking about?
Actualy this is a good thing.

and its not free!
so no one cane improve on it, or put it in another distro.
So they lock you in, and we are back to square one again.
I know Be does, i was responding to his sig.
heh
But even though Be has a cli, it is still limited
can you do everything in be from the command line? i though so.

"four?"
hmmm... people who live in stone houses should not throw glasses
well make your own damn WM
or patch one to do your work.

have you ever heard of "CHOICE" or "FREE WILL"
