So if you were the big time exec how would you handle letting people rent movies without having to return them in a way that "trusts" consumers. Give them a fully functioning DVD for $7.00 and ask that they please not watch the movie again unless they pay more?
Sometimes I wonder if some of the posters here really believe what they are saying, or if people just know that if you type "customer freedom" mods will give you karma. This is not about the big bad company limiting your freedom. They are giving you MORE choices. You can buy a DVD that you can keep forever for $20.00, or you can CHOOSE to rent a DVD for 48 hours for $7.00. Yes, I think 7.00 is overpriced, but if it was $4.00 it would be a great deal. No, you will not own the DVD and be able to do whatever you want with it. This is why rentals are cheaper...because you don't own the product. Believe it or not many consumers like to rent things. This is why blockbuster, netflix, and cox are still around.
While I agree that it was an idea that was badly handled (and over priced), how in the world does it show a lack of respect for the consumer? They are giving people another way of watching movies. Does blockbuster show a lack of respect by only letting you rent? Some people here have the mindset that anything you pay money for you should own...but rentals are a viable way to do business. You can charge a lower price, and the consumer can get the product for a limited amount of time. There are many movies that I enjoy watching once, but would never see again. A rental model of business is perfect for that situation.
I am not sure what the eco nuts were so upset about. There is a recycling plan (according to the article) and even gave people a free disk if they sent in 6 disks. Though, I understand why stores are not selling very many...while the story is an exageration (what rental places rents for 2 bucks a DVD), these disks are a lot more expensive than renting.
It would be far easier to get people's credit card numbers and use them. Stealing people's credit card numbers does happen (as does putting their info onto blanks), so I would guess eventually people will do the same with RFIDs (though it would likely be more expensive to do right now). However, the risk of fraud has not stopped people from using credit cards, so I doubt it will stop them from using RFIDs. If it becomes to much of a problem, the companies that make the RFIDs will have to beef up security to keep from getting stuck with the bill...just as some credit card companies have been pushing for photo cards for the same reason.
how many times has your watch simply fallen off your wrist without you noticing it? Have you ever heard someone say "I would by a Rolex, but damn...if it simply fell off my wrist I would be out of a couple thousand dolars."
If for some reason it did happen to fall off your wrist, you would do the same thing as you would do when you loose your CC...cancel it. Treat it as you would treat an expensive watch...don't leave it lying around...and if the strap breaks...don't just say screw it and leave it on the ground, bend down and pick it up.
But if you reeive an HTML message that includes an IMG link to the senders' site, when Outlook displays the image (even if it's an invisble 1 pixel one) they have your IP. There are ways to block this, but it's on by default. Spammers use this to verify your address.
It depends on your version, I have the new outlook at by default it blocks all images in e-mail unless you have set the person as a trusted sender. I also have to OK read recipts. It seems microsoft is becoming just a little bit more away of spam. Of course outlook express does not do this by default.
Of course the fact that in this case the FBI had the cooperation of the guy's ISPs helped out as well. The article does not go into detail about how the program sent back a response...but it seemed to imply that it was more complicated than just using an image. They also said that this confirmed other evidence that pointed in his direction.
from the article: "Liu was bailed out on Friday afternoon, the centre said, saying the move amounted to freeing her because political detainees are rarely, if ever, released on bail."
While China does not typically release political detainees, they are only releasing her on bail. They could still pick her up for the same thing some time later, or decide to officially charge her. It is also important to note that they convicted one of the 4 involved. This situation is far from being over.

It is a different situation as in most comercials, since Jared is not an actor. He is a real person who lost a ton of weight who goes around telling his story (he gets paid for speaking gigs as well). Other food companies hire actors anyway, so it makes more sense to replace their voices.
how about 50 episodes of Alias stored on a windows MCE PC...damn this is slashdot...I mean on a Linux PC with the DRM used in MCE cracked so the dvr-ms files can run under linux and be freely destributed through gnutella (and burned onto DVD).
chances are their PDA's and Cell phones will be one and the same, so they will simply look at the program notes while they are talking on their phone (in speaker phone mode of course) while setting their ringtones to match the song that is currently playing.
nah, they can just use the crisis center started for people who actually belived that Duke Nukem forever was going to come out, and Team fortress 2 was really ever in development.
very true...netflix needs some competition. I was very disapointed with their service, because of their long waits. I was a frequent renter, so I was low on the food chain when trying to get popular movies, so my first 20 or so choices all had "very long wait." If walmart or blockbuster can do it better, maybe I will try out their services and actually stick with them
I find have found the best way out of that situation is to pretend that you don't understand her implication...it really pisses them off.
I just answered in a chipper voice, well in that case my advice is to go through the chapter and define all the key words that are listed at the end. You should also set up an outline for the sample essay questions that were given to the class.
You are bound to get a look like "can anyone be so stupid" but it does make a possibly dangerous situation less awkward.
the student who e-mails you once a day asking questions about every detail of the course...and of course stops by your office to ask if you got her e-mail if you don't answer it within an hour.
sadly what often happens, is the professor is no longer assigned graduate classes...they are simply asssigned a full load of undergraduate classes, so the grad students don't have to deal with them.
"Why would they want that? They make money from Live subscriptions and game sales. People who mod their XBox are unlikely to purchase either."
Because they can get 3rd party game companies to sign on by saying that millions of Xbox's have been sold. Then people who are likely to buy games will buy the xbox because of those 3rd party game companies.
Also it looks good on their press release to say how many Xbox consoles were sold...and sets them up for the Xbox 2.
If the modding got to out of hand and the decided that the money lost outweighed the benifits they might step in...but for now they will likely let most of the hacking slide.
It won't help for long. I did the same thing, and like you the movies I complained about were freed up right away. I guess my threatening to quit bumped me up in their priority listing. Sadly this only lasted for a couple of weeks then I had the same problems again. This time I just gave up and quit. When I complained they did say they were working on their availability issues...but I was not going to pay every month to not get the movies I wanted to see.
Perhaps at this point in time "system administrator" does not fit a lot of people with the title perfectly, but it has worked for this long...I don't see the need to change it.
People are always trying to monkey with titles. When I was in high school the store I worked at had a janitor who insisted on being called a "custodial engineer" Just leave titles alone and stop trying to confuse people.
They are not warlike people when they don't think they can win. If Germany had the military power that the USA had...well they have proven in the past that they would use it.

While some of the quotes sound bad...it is important to note tht this is in macworld...prob not the least biased place for an anti windows story.

Geeks start raising their PDA's over their heads with the backlights on as a safe alternative to using a lighter.

ya...but wait until you try and have kids. You just think your laptop is safe. :)
