The other day on TNT I was watching some movie about a secret service agent and a cheerleader ran across the screen with a sign advertising the start of college football. I sure hope that does not catch on, because it was annoying as hell.

I am amazed that they have gotten up to 95% accuracy...though I suspect that this is with someone who went through a long training with the device, and they do mention that it has to be calibrated...a lot like the speech to text programs that never really caught on.

I think the annoyances would outweigh the benefits. They would be a pain to deal with...you would constantly have to turn them on and off so they don't start speaking when you are simply using your hands to say, pick something up. They would likely be very easy to break...your hands put things through a lot of stress.

Plus, a hearing person who is motivated can communicate with a deaf person if they put forth any effort. My high school had a program for deaf people, so I saw many of them around school...and never had a problem communicating with them. We did not use proper sign language like they used with each other, but a mix between gestures that we could all figure out, and lip reading. I have run into several of them since then and did not have any trouble communicating without pen or paper. My guess is many of them would rather communicate in this way, than deal with a flawed system that is a pain to use.

That being said...it is good that research is being done on the topic, because it not only opens people's eyes to the hassles that the deaf must go through...but it opens up a possibility where maybe in the future a system like this could be worked out that is more effective...though I think it would be very hard to do, perhaps it would not be impossible.

For now, the Bush administration is cool to the idea, but it's not hard to envision the Department of Homeland Security re-examining the concept if further terrorist attacks occur. More than 30 countries, from Italy to Malaysia, have already introduced "smart" ID cards. If you're eventually issued a national card, it will likely incorporate several of the technologies shown here, combined to make the card readable by both high- and low-tech devices.

After reading that from the beginning of the article you know that the rest of the article is nothing more than the writers fantasy. Come on, their evidence for the ID card is "it's not hard to envision the Department of Homeland Security re-examining the concept if further terrorist attacks occur"

I could understand the article, and people's reaction if Bush currently said he was pushing the idea (I say currently since a lot of things were batted around right after the attacks that were abandoned when everyone calmed down) but the article itself admits that Bush is not fond of the idea.

Both I, and one of my roommates have gateway computers. When any of the original hardware had problems (whether it was our fault, or gateway's) they replaced it free of charge without any hassle. I had a 10 gig hard drive crash twice, so they sent me a 30 gig to replace it for free. It did not take lots of hounding on my part (which I have had to deal with when dealing with other companies) I just told the tech support person, that a drive should not crash twice in a year, and if I reformat it again, it will simply crash again. He agreed, and sent me a new (larger) hard drive. I did not even pay shipping.

My roommate spilled coke on his keyboard and mouse...so they replaced them for free. When he wanted to upgrade to a P4, they walked him through the upgrade, and even found him a board that would let him use his old sdram (they did recommend that he not do it that way...but since it was cheaper that is what he wanted).

If I ever do buy a computer from a company again...as opposed to simply upgrading the one I have, it will be a gateway, simply because I liked dealing with them. I have dealt with IBM, Dell, and Compaq in the past (IBM for myself, and the others for friends/family) and gateway was much easier to deal with than the rest.

So, basically...paying for a name is not all that bad...IF the company lives up to their name.
