1. Coca-Cola freaking tastes really good. I don't care if it had a big picture of a turd on the front... I would still drink it like crazy.
2. Nike makes really good products. Their sports gear is really high quality. Sure, some of the stuff is priced way higher than what it's worth... but most of it is high quality sports gear that's worth it's pricetag.
People respond to _good products_. Advertising really only helps (for me anyway) with the _initial_ trial. That is, if I had never heard of Coca-Cola before, I might never pick up a bottle in the first place to find out how good it is. But after that initial "tasting"... it's all on the product's merit.
I'm sure that there are people out there that are complete sheep... but there are a lot that aren't.
Having just gained 3 leopard running computers in the past couple of months... I gotta say that I've used Dashboard a lot more than I thought.
At work I use a resource monitor, calculator, weather, sticky notes, iCal events (which shows my upcoming google calendar events since I sync it with iCal) and calendar all day long. I also use a subset of these on my work laptop and home laptop... but I really use them more at work.
When I first got all these Macs I wondered how much I would really use Dashboard... I mean, I've used Superkaramba at several points in the past (and a couple other widget engines for Windows), but it never really stuck. Like others, the fact that I always have applications open (covering the gadgets) meant that I never really saw them. And thus is the genius of Dashboard. Having the gadgets sit on a transparent plane that I can summon at any moment is what sets it apart. I have Dashboard set to open when I mouse to the bottom left corner and I now do so without even thinking most of the time.
As someone who has been playing Brawl for the last week... I gotta say that it is definitely going to help sell Wiis. It is a spectacular game in every way...
A friend of mine with only a PS3 (for the Blu-Ray and media center more than anything) is definitely picking up a Wii now that he's seen Brawl (and Mario Kart Wii is supposedly right around the corner as well). We played a bunch of Melee during college... and now that he's confirmed that it's better than Melee and has online support... it's an easy sell.
BTW - The online play is great. It's not without its hitches... but it works beautifully most of the time. It is quite fun to beat on one of my friends from several states away...
Are you being serious? Can't be bothered to move my TV? When the hell was the last time you really had control over how far away from the TV you sat?
Even a 32" TV is too big to pick up and put on the coffee table or whatever... just what the hell are you talking about? You want people to sit in lawn chairs in front of their couch?
BTW: 6 feet is not very far. I would wager that most people sit more that 6 feet away from their TV. I've lived in some tiny ass apartments and _still_ been more than 6 feet from my TV.
Anyone that says that they do not get the "HD" fuss... just doesn't have good enough equipment.
I completely agree that with a 32" or smaller TV (and sitting more than 6 feet away) and a crappy surround sound in a box system the added cost of HD over a regular DVD isn't worth it. But once you put some cash into a really good system (46" or larger top of the line TV, high end receiver and a decent set of speakers paired with a nice subwoofer) you can _REALLY_ and I mean _REALLY_ tell the difference.
I set out last year to build myself a nice system. I did a _lot_ of bargain hunting and buying stuff on clearance from various websites. For about $3,000 I was able to put together a good enough system that even my wife can't stand watching regular DVD's anymore. The difference is ENORMOUS. Yes, the video looks great... but the lossless audio makes just as much of a difference. In fact, I would say that's the thing my wife notices the most... how clear voices are and how rich the bass is.
There really is something to this "HD Thing". Yeah... it's not for everyone.... but if you're really into home theater it makes a huge difference.
Are you being serious? You do know that many people already vote this way, right?
I grew up in Missouri and every time I've voted it's been this way. You use a black felt tip marker to fill in the oval by the candidates you want to vote for, then feed it into the machine when you're finished. The "machine" is just a reader on top of a secure "bucket". It reads and tallies immediately... but the paper trail still exists in the case of a recount. The ballots themselves are _very_ easy to understand and mark. I've always found it to be a rewarding experience...
My old high-school and college friends have gone to a system where we all decide on an evening a week to try and get together and play. Sure, not everyone can make it every week... but at least a few do. It's really been pretty fun (we've been doing it for about 6 months now) and most of us haven't found it hard to carve out 3 or 4 hours on a Tuesday evening to enjoy our favorite hobby with friends that we very rarely get to see in real life (many live all over the country now).
If you have a lot of friends that still play games... try setting a night to get together.... much better than trying to schedule something every week (or once a month or whatever).
I personally keep my "Inbox" bone dry, Archiving everything that I read. The only things that linger are emails that I still have to act upon (respond to, do something in RL, etc.).
Not having a good analog for Archive in IMAP definitely lessens its usefulness.
Not only does it take up ridiculous amounts of time on Sportscenter that would be better served by talking about Football... now it has to ruin my weekend trip to Denver!
I bought ballet tickets in Denver for my wife's birthday a couple of months ago, not recognizing that the world series might be in town the very same weekend... luckily I had enough forethought to also book the hotel room at the same time... or we'd be screwed right now! It's going to be an absolute zoo in downtown Denver this weekend.... here's to $30 a day parking!
Lately I've been explaining this almost weekly as many friends of mine are in the HDTV buying mode right now (ramping up towards christmas). I had one friend that unfortunately didn't chat with me about cables before buying his HDTV. He got a pretty good deal on the TV... but got owned on the cables (bought 3 HDMI Monster cables at $100 a piece... sigh).
Other cables that drive me crazy are optical cables. It's _light_... it's digital... you either get it or you don't. My Dad recently got a home theater system and I warned him that they would try to sell him really expensive optical cables... and sure enough they did. But my Dad pressed the salesman to show him the difference and the guy just blubbered and Dad walked out of the store with a $7 cable...
I honestly think that there should be a class action lawsuit against Monster Cable. What they do is no less than pure false advertising. They prey on the uneducated...
For everyone out there looking for some good _and_ cheap HDMI (and other) cables... please check out http://www.monoprice.com/ . I own several of their cheap (as in I got 3 for $15 including shipping) and they work wonderfully.
I just got Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (ridiculous album name BTW)... and can't stop listening to it... what an unbelievable set of songs...
I will actually be using this quite a bit myself. Just to name a few that I saw (that you didn't mention) that I will probably buy: Coldplay, Interpol, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Amy Winehouse and more... I mean they've got Beastie Boys, Anthrax and The Smashing Pumpkins.... maybe it's time to rebuy some of those CDs I've lots/scratched/destroyed over the years....
This is truly a _better_ selection for those of us who follow popular music (I know a lot of people on here don't... which is ok... but really some of us do... and enjoy it) than eMusic. I was on eMusic for about 6 months and many of those months I was _hunting_ for stuff to buy (after I nabbed all the Spoon albums of course). Sure it introduced me to some stuff I probably wouldn't have listened to... but it didn't feel like a great value. This Amazon service feels like exactly what I've been looking for.
Wow... your comments almost exactly mirror my own thoughts on all of these shows! Specifically I really liked Chuck and can't wait to see Pushing Up Daises.
In contrast to you though... I think Pushing Up Daises is going to be fairly well received. I've been talking to a lot of people about the new fall shows... and the one show everyone mentions as a "must see" is Pushing Up Daises...
I guess we'll have to see how it works out... but I think we might be surprised by PUD.
I can say that a PS3 works fine outputting optical while connected via HDMI... I used my friend's PS3 with my TV and surround sound system in just this way.
But you are correct... the preferred way to get sound out of a PS3 (or any other HD player) is HDMI... this is the only way to receive the next-gen surround sound signals (Dolby TrueHD for instance).
My receiver does accept HDMI... but it would have been a pain to hook up the PS3 that way for an evening... much easier to use the optical port on the front and the side HDMI port on my TV...
"Unfortunately their licensing stream is drying up. The only AAA licensee of the Doom3 engine was what, Prey?"
Well... that and Doom3 of course... and Quake4 wasn't that much of a modification... and a slight modification of that creates Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.
Doom3 sold millions of copies, and it was an internal project so that generates HUGE bucks for id. ETQW will also sell millions. How many million+ copy games do you need to sustain a fairly small company? Not many.
And if you go to Quakecon you can see the other stuff they work on as well... like the (relatively) new line of cell-phone games and even a Nintendo DS game that's coming out this year as well as movie deals (they announced a Wolfenstein movie at Quakecon). In general, I'd say that id isn't hurting for cash. Sure, some engines like the HL2 engine from Valve have started doing better recently... but I don't think it's making a huge impact on id.
I'm actually 33x36 myself... which is pretty hard to find.
Lately, I've been ordering from American Eagle and Gap... both of which have most of their pants in 32x36 and some in 33x36... and they don't look like old man's clothes...
I was both at QCon and at the Keynote... and I gotta say it was pretty awesome.
The best part of the Con by far was the release of public beta 2 of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. My crew spent billions of hours over the past two days (with little sleep) battling it out in that game.
Another highlight for me were the tourney finals last night. Watching Toxiq and that other guy (can't remember his name sorry) go at it through all 4 Quake games was a blast...
The keynote was _very_ good... with a lot of little bombs dropped in between the big announcements. As others mentioned... the biggest thing was me is that there is going to be a Quake 3 Arena sequel that is built on id Tech 5... it should be awesome!
I'm not really sure why all these haters have come out against id Software... they're a great bunch of guys that still do things the old way (just keep hacking at it "until it's done"). They show a lot of passion towards their products and truly embrace the community (I mean, Quakecon alone is free) even GPLing old game engines.
Really, I don't think there is a better gaming company out there to support....
Copying CDs has been pretty easy for a long time now... but musicians haven't starved.
Copying copyrighted music has always been illegal... the DMCA didn't make it "more illegal" or whatever.
Some (I would argue most) people really do like to follow the law, even when it's easy not too... those people will always continue to buy the music they want to hear. Not too mention that some of us feel _good_ about buying cds because we like to support artists that we enjoy (even if most of the money doesn't go to them, more cds sold = good chance of another from the same artist).
Really... assuming that everyone in the US (or world) would break the law and not give any compensation for any entertainment they enjoy is just foolish. I think the RIAA and MPAA forget this sometimes... that 99% of people in the world are actually good people who like to do the right thing.
They only have 75hz refresh rates if you're _not_ using DVI. DVI is always 60hz.
This is exactly why I still use a vga cable with my LCD monitor. It accepts DVI and I did have it hooked up that way for a while... but my LCD will do 75hz with a vga cable... so I switched back.
It's not that the refresh rate is hard on the eyes or whatever like it used to be... but I just find motion to be smoother at 75hz (dragging windows around in particular... but also playing games).
The difference is in the length of "surveillance"... if you are putting up a video camera looking at someone else's house, then you are documenting everything about their life and what they do on their property... that is an invasion of privacy.
On the other hand, a single photograph on a single day of someone's private property is _not_ (in my mind) an invasion of privacy... it's just happenstance. You are not systematically documenting someone's life, only getting a single picture at a point in time.
Hehe... I slept out overnight at the Toys-R-Us at Parmer and 35 a couple weeks after release to get mine.... it was a little cold and rainy, but well worth it!
I have friends in Austin, that like you, are _still_ trying to find one... hippies must be loving this thing to keep it so scarce there:-P
I wish people would just realize for once... that just because it says (R) or (D) next to your name that doesn't imbue you with any special properties. At this point I'm inclined to believe that _every single one of them lies_ regardless of their affiliation.
Back on topic... what I want to know is... why do they _want_ to tax internet connections? What is the government even going to claim to be doing with that money? When you tax gasoline the stated purpose is to support the road infrastructure... what is the government going to do for the internet with all this new money? Is the government going to start laying pipes? Are they going to create a new regulatory group to try to wrangle in ISPs? What?
I've seen several of these movies over the last year or so:
Monster House Nightmare Before Christmas (it was re-released in 3d last year) Meet The Robinsons
My wife and I love these movies... it really is a blast.
Like others have mentioned you get a brand new pair of glasses (sealed in plastic) each time you go. Which, while it might be wasteful, I prefer over hand-me-down gunked up glasses (like I've used at the IMAX). The glasses are plastic and fit well over my normal glasses

The problem with that is in 3d your eyes are supposed to do this automatically... in some scenes where this effect is overused it did make my eyes start to water. It's almost _forcing_ your eyes to focus on something... which just doesn't feel right. But this is just a minor kink that movie producers will figure out.
All in all... if you have a theater equipped with this ability in your area, you owe it to yourself to check it out! It really is a great experience!
I have touble with both of your examples...
1. Coca-Cola freaking tastes really good. I don't care if it had a big picture of a turd on the front... I would still drink it like crazy.

Pretty much the same in my apartment here. I can see 13 access points... and only one of them is named "linksys" and unencrypted...
People seem to have figured it out.

All in all... if you have a theater equipped with this ability in your area, you owe it to yourself to check it out! It really is a great experience!
