  1. why bother? on Why Apple Should Acquire AMD · · Score: 4, Insightful

Steve Jobs is ruthless when it comes to making interesting deals with powerful companies.

At this point, I'd call AMD interesting, but I don't know about powerful.

Apple has made some interesting deals in the past, but the whole point of the Intel switch was because Intel is the clear market leader for processors, and there's nothing out there that makes me think this is going to stop any time soon. Apple doesn't need to have something else to differentiate themselves from the standard PC market like this.

You do have a good point about things going out when you get older, but that's not nature's fault. Because if it were not for all our complicated medicines, we'd still have about a 45 year lifespan, and we'd be dead before a lot of those things started to happen. So Nature does have it worked out to the extent that it thinks we should be living... all the other things that happen stem from our ability to extend life through knowledge.

In other words- beware things that are popular, as you'll be subject to the same problems as everyone else when the system goes down.

I hate MS as much as anyone (I'm a Mac Fanboy if ever there was one) I have to say, though, the new features in Sharepoint 2007 are good enough to perhaps entrench microsoft in the coming onslought of office products from Google and others. It's a solid collaboration tool. The new slide library tool is going to be a big hit with office like mine that have about 2,000 slides to manage. Sharepoint may be the only MS product I've ever been excited for.

  12. Cingular Service plan will kill it on iPhone Faces Uncertain Market · · Score: 5, Insightful

If you look at Cingular's current plans for blackberrys, their voice and data packages start at about $80 per month. You can bet they will charge at least that for the iPhone service, if not more. even if it is just $80 a month, you are going to wind up paying $2520 over two years (including $600 for the phone), and that's before fees and taxes.

So that $600 price tag is really closer to $3000.

If Apple is really smart, they've already locked Cingular to a reasonable cell plan. They might be able to capture the high-end market with the iPhone, but without cheaper plans, they will never get the majority of people.

Unless they have changed a lot in the last 18 months, I'm willing to bet this is going to be a big flop.

I love Google, but it seems that Youtube is becoming a monkey on their back- they paid a ton of money for it, and now they don't know what to do with it. Cell phones? Not the type of thinking I'm used to seeing with Google, but I'll hold off on a final judgment when I see it.
