IANAL but as I understand it, a new law would need to be passed to make the owner of the vehicle (or at least the ezpass subscriber) responsible for any speeding tickets incurred by anyone who drives the vehicle. As it stands now, at least here in NJ, a speeding ticket is issued to an individual and not to a vehicle. Therefore if I receive a summons in the mail for speeding that was detected using this ezpass method I can claim I was not driving the vehicle at that time and the ticket is thrown out. Same argument applies for Ka band photo radar.

Interesting. I just heard on NPR (here in the States) yesterday that Tony Blair is trying to increase tuition fees there as well. Apparantly tuition was free in Britain as well prior to six years ago when Mr. Blair took over as PM. These increases could possibly triple what British students now pay, up to about US $5000 per hear. In the report students could be heard chanting that they wanted a "fair education", which they defined as a "free education".

By US standards US $5000 per year for school is extremely inexpensive. One can only get the most basic education for that money, and room and board would almost certainly not be included in that price, and most likely neither would books. For a good education here in the US try something more in the line of US $20,000 per year.

Mr. Blair's point is a good one though. If students can expect to obtain a better paying job by attending and completing studies at University, they should also bear part of the financial burden. At least it makes sense from this side of the pond.

How soon we forget. Anyone remember how useless the Internet was on 11 September 2001? Internet communication still uses shared bandwidth and is typically a one to one communication. Each user opens a connection to a web server over a relatively small pipe and requests data. With radio the data is always there - just turn on the receiver. No bandwidth constraints, no waiting for requests to be processed, no /. effect, and most of the time it's backhoe-proof. Can't say that for most websites or the Internet infrastructure in general.

If a typical environment consists of 20 PC's and a couple of servers, I'm not going to recommend my client dump their investment in Intel hardware and buy a bunch of Apple machines, even if I'm looking for a graphic/multimedia system and regardless of how cool I think OS X is. Instead, I'll find something that doesn't require the user's learning a new platform (Mac OS X) and doesn't require as large an investment in new hardware.
