Look, if you can find things like Tubgirl on the internet (and no, I ain't posting a link), you ain't got a whole lot of room to bitch about how the US handles sexuality on the internet. And what's the favorite slashdot spammed website? Something to do with goats? Yeah, the US is REALLY cracking down hard, isn't it?

Please. With as much control and enforcement as you credit the government with, it's simply AMAZING how these and countless porn sites still not simply exist, but thrive. Sure some are based off shore, but the world according to the paranoid United States of the Empire says we can shut them down with a snap of the fingers, regardless of where they're based.

Give it a rest already. The facts don't support this level of conspiracy theory paranoia.

Me thinks that a LOT of people are going to be opposed to turning the face of the moon into one huge resource operation. Of course, you could try the darkside and mess it up to your heart's content, but that'll create huge logistics problems beyond just strip mining the moon.

Sorry, but just don't see this as anything more than 'moon propaganda' on the part of whowever brings it, not just China. Of course, i tend to take their claims with a grain of salt anyway, but...

Microsoft did if with Windows before the web, Google is doing it with the web as we speak. It's a small move to take total possession of your PC at this point. 8. Rare Air for the PSP on Datels 4GB Hard Drive for PSP Reviewed · · Score: 1

Ok, I love the PSP and all... But we're getting into some pretty rare pricing air here. You just paid $250 for a PSP. another $50 for a game. Maybe $50 to $100 on a decent memory stick. I know! Lets crop another duce and spend $200 for a micro HDD. That's a minimum of nearly $600 we're now investing on a handheld gaming system, assuming you don't buy any other games.

Now I have to point out that the incremental approach that Sony seems to be engaging in is not a bad strategy-- Buy only what you want or can afford, thereby trying to appeal to everybody, and a 4gb micro drive + battery ain't exactly cheap, but we're approaching some rare finacial air here and I wonder if they couldn't have gone about this a better way because I can all but gaurantee that adding one of those on to a handheld is going to be the niche of a niche market, especially when it's iPod competition kicks into gear for price comparison sake. i get the feeling that they're splitting apart their own market doing this...

  9. Free(er) Speech on EU Claims Internet Could Fall Apart Next Month · · Score: 2, Insightful

Okay then, how about free(er) speech than most of the world? Of course, there is no such thing as absolute freedom of speech, but the US is unique among the world when it comes right down to it, expecially when considering the nessisary autonomy required for the internet to work. First, you have to go a long way toward matching the the US in terms of our free speech standards. Then you have to ensure not only are they economically stable, but economically vibrant as well, as in being able to recover from 9-11 type events, te demolision of an entire city due to hurricain and STILL hold the ability to fund other countries forgien aid AND turn right around and send extra> disaster relief to places like Afganistan.

I'm not citing all this to toot the US horn, but right now the internet is based in a country with stong freedom of speech standards and an excellent economic foundation. And there are plenty of other elements that make the one of the few countries that you would actually want preciding over the net as opposed to a loose coalition of countries. Come on, do you really want the UN on the internet?

More to the point, do you really think the internet would have grown and propered the same if it had started out as a UN-like activity? Honestly, I think you're kidding yourself if you think it would have.

Yeah, color me a tad paranoid, but I nearly always assume that the Chinese government has ulterior motive beyond the headlines. Of course, they could be doing it for pure profit and control of an industry standard, but lets face it, they're starting a bit late in the game and offering little in the way of innovation to actually have any sort of leverage. But saying 'yay' or 'nay' as to which movies (and ideas) get pressed for their populace to view? Yeah, I can see that.

"Taiwan Irked at Google's Version of Earth"

Actually this is quite interesting considering it is a known fact [past slashdot story here, too lazy to link] that Google is actively courting a business relationship with China and has already agreed to the censorship of their own search engine. Perhapse it smacks a bit of conspiracy theory (ok, no perhapse about it), but it's not exactly a huge stretch to believe that this may have been part of that business agreement. Google wants Chinese business, China demands a few small concessions, this being one of them. Honestly, what is Taiwan going to do about it? Whose economic impact is more important to google as a whole?

Yeah, I know it goes against everybody's sensibilities that Google is the self proclaimed 'good company' but I think the fact they caved to censorship in the first place already puts that particular bit in doubt.

On a side note, it's absolutely facinating what you CAN find using Google Earth. Scouring the naval shipyards in Yokosuka, Japan (old stomping grounds) found me a few cruisers and an aircraft carrier in port (35.17.28N by 139.39.46E for the curious). Also wonder if they have specific agreements to limit the resolution of any given area to comply with that nation's policy. I may not hold any love for the company, but it's a damn useful tool, I'll give em that.
