  1. Might as well slit your own throat... on Xbox Hackers, Linux, the DMCA, And Modchips · · Score: 2, Interesting

"The reality is that if you could bypass Microsoft's operating system you would end up with a fairly powerful computer for less than $200"

As self righteous as hackers can be over the XBox-Linux debacle, I don't know of a company in the world that slit their own throats like these fools expect MS to. I'm sorry, these people simply aren't living in reality.

I've said it before and I'll say it again-- when a company has so much to lose by allowing the competition access to their product only a stoned idiot would consider this a good thing for their business, yet we have plenty of absolute fucking idiots crying that they somehow have a right to force MS into Linux compatibility when that God given right to Linux never existed. "It's a sad day for Microsoft" only because somebody got smacked upside the head with a reality check.

Look, I like the hacks as much as the next guy. I'll be using it just to play the import Yukikaze (Movie; Cripes this game looks hot), but it just bugs the shit out of me when people insist on pushing their own little open source fantasies in places where reality simply doesn't allow for them.

Funny, I don't see anybody rushing to put content rating on these popular sports even though they've caused more violence than any game of Postal, Quake, etc, nor do I see them trying to ban sports based on the potential reaction of the fans hometeam winning.

Ah, I just love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning...

    Time to buy a clue--
Cartrige = limited media at higher cost.
MiniDVD = Massive Media storage at little cost.

It holds true on the console, and it holds true on handhelds. If both systems have equal processing power, which is more likely to have the better games? The one with the higher/cheaper storage values simply becuse more audio/video/textures/etc can be fit on it.

And THAT was my point. If Nintendo takes another cartrige format against a disk format, they might as well kiss it goodbye like they did the N64. that is assuming Sony knows anything about pricing their unit competitively, which I think they're smart enough to do.

  5. No Storage Info? on Nintendo Researchers Talk Next-Gen GBA · · Score: 1

I mean really. I think this hack is as cool as the next person does, but who do these guys really think they're fooling? If there is one thing that everybody on the planet Earth knows, it's that MS is not about to assist ANYBODY in the installation of Linux on their console.

"We were nice, polite and reasonable in our attempt to pursuade MS into supporting offical Linux/Xbox development, but since they didn't call back, we released the exploit to the world at large."

I guess you can't blame em for trying, but how is this noteworthy again? Microsoft doesn't want Linux on the XBox. How dense do you have to be to not realize this??? OF COURSE THEY AREN'T GOING TO COOPERATE WITH YOU, regardless of how unfortuante you think it is!!!

You're asking them to remove the only saftey that guarantees they make money on games, their primary source of income! Add Linux and the box becomes a computer, a device of multiple uses. Now you can buy a cheap ass XBox computer sold at a hefty loss and MS has no guaranteed way to recoup the loss because you no longer have to buy games for it.

On top of all that, MS is in DIRECT COMPETITION with the Linux platform (unlike Sony)!!

To even believe they'd answer any other way than they did is insanity of the highest order. Asking them to sell their hardware at a loss and cut the only guarantee they can make the money back through games?! Yeah, I know I would have cooperated too...

I mean, I think the hack is cool, but the sheer naivity of people like these amazes me.

How many lines did arnold have as an evil ternimator? The guy in T2? Just have them walk around with a purpose and a serious face. Don't give em more than 10 lines and you're set. It's really a gimmie role, one the woman does admirably.

  17. Server side Auditing. on Cheating in Multiplayer Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

Just curious, but how hard would it be to confirm the physics of most cheating server side? I mean, wall hack for instance. Couldn't one easily build in some sort of check and balance to see if the shot is possible or not? Same with the head shot deal. Create a routine that audits "outstanding" players. Axer05 just got his 4th strait head shot. Audit program cuts in and monitors him for a bit, judging whether the shots are even possible. I imagine such an audit program could judge a great number of attributes on specific players if they bring attention to themselves, or even at random.

I specify one at a time as I imagine it'd take too much processing power to double check everybody, but the principle would be sound. No checking everybodies files, HD, whatever. Safe, non-intrusive and fairly difficult to spoof since the auditing relies on the server side mechanics, not the peer-hacked files.
