  1. Re:smb3 vs. mario bros on Japanese Fans Vote On Top 30 NES Games · · Score: 2, Informative

In SMB3, they use the original Mario Bros. level as a means to present Vs. Mode. It's not the actual game, though the GBA version (Super Mario Advance 4) contains the original Mario Bros. as do all Super Mario Advance games.

Yeah, Rockstar made it a point to say that Vice City wasn't really GTA 4. More like a GTA 3.5. In fairness, it was a little more than different skins and a different map. They did update the engine and tweak the gameplay enough to consider it more than just an expansion pack.

I'm betting that Rockstar is going to forget about numbers all together and just start giving them subtitles, so the whole "Is it GTA 4 or 5?" discussion will be moot anyway.

  6. Re:XPlay on On Videogaming TV Shows And Vitriol · · Score: 1

I too like Extended Play. And I prefer the original, less stupid name that doesn't sound like the result of a 4 hour brainstorming session between 7 marketing shitheads who wanted an "edgier" name for the show. I stopped watching it right around the time Kate left. Not because of her really, just because I moved and now I don't get TechTV anymore.

The only problem I have with the show is that every once in a while, I would go to turn it on and TSS would be on instead. Inevitably, I would hear Leo say "personal confuser" or something equally moronic and my mind would spiral into a psychotic rage. Other than that, it's a good show.

"Waaaah. I have so many games that have provided me with so many hours of fun that the next great game comes out before I've finished. Waaah!"

Since when did playing video games become about beating them? It's only about beating them if you're having a dick waving contest with your friends. Otherwise, it's about having fun and being entertained. If some people have fun playing 80 hours worth of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, who are you to say that it's too long? I'm so sorry your busy schedule of playing video games for a goddamn living didn't provide you 40 hours with which to get 100% in GTA3. Cry me a river.

I have a GP32. Right now, it isn't quite as nice as having something like Gameboy (which I also have) but the community development is starting to pick up some steam and there are games available for it. It's a pretty neat little toy and there are some unique games available for it, though maybe not always as polished as for other consoles and handhelds. There are also a ton of emulators available and in development.

The original arcade version of Ninja Gaiden and the NES version have pretty much nothing in common.

I'm actually quite displeased that it's the NES version that's unlockable and not the arcade version since I got the opposite impression when I first read about this. Granted, the one on the NES is harder (those FUCKING birds!), though I never finished the arcade version either due to lack of quarters. On the other hand, the arcade version is prettier and, in my opinion, more fun.

Oh well, none of this is stopping me from purchasing the game. Ninja Gaiden and KOTOR are the only two reasons I bought an XBox.

I don't think the two are in disagreement. He's likely differentiating between "gamers" and "people who play games".

Someone who just plays games might be the guy who pops in Halo and plays with his buddies for an hour and a half before they head out to the bar, or the little kid that likes to play Kingdom Hearts because he wants to hear Donald talk.

A gamer is someone who would, say, post messages in a Slashdot Games forum to debate the finer points of speech given by a Nintendo executive. =)

How about we put it this way: "A game machine should not be unnecessarily complicated."

I think we can all get on board with that.

The internet isn't slowed down by Windows viruses.

Your singular experience doesn't translate into a global conclusion. Yes, maybe your company's network is considerably slower due to a proliferation of Windows viruses, but what does that have to do with "the internet"? All it does is prove that your pipe is choked by something, and that something is possibly a rampaging Windows virus or worm. Maybe it has more to do with a shitty IT department at your place of employment than Windows.

I won't defend the vast magnitude of negligence that goes into (and over the years has gone into) Windows development, but to make such broad generalizations based on your only your own small window (ahem, pardon the pun) of experience is just silly.

  23. Re:Can we really enforce this? on California Tries Spam Ban · · Score: 2, Insightful

Let me start by saying, I agree with the notion that the spam problem is only going to be fixed within the community, not by laws or regulations. However, the problem with spam isn't just about people receiving and having to sift through a bunch of unwanted email. It's also about the amount of bandwidth it consumes. Even if I am able to block the spam at the server side, it obviously still took someone's bandwidth to get it that far.

Also, the average person doesn't run their own mail server. If they want to use Bayesian filtering or any other method of blocking spam at the mail server, they are at the mercy of their ISP or email provider. I think it's unreasonable to expect every person with an email address to have the skills necessary to run and maintain a spam-filtering mail server. That's not to say they shouldn't make some effort to learn how to deal with it, just not that extreme.

I say if you want to get rid of the spam problem, stop fucking clicking through! Spammers don't keep sending this stuff out because they like watching people get pissed (though I'm sure some do). They continue to do it because they are making money. That means people are visiting the sites and/or making purchases via the spam. If people would cut that out, the spam would likely slow down considerably.

The question I have is how is it possible that California is making it illegal to send UCE to my Inbox, but it's still legal to send UCRealMail to my actual mailbox? I find it very difficult to believe that this will be enforceable, but it sure looks good on paper.
