Another vapourware product, probably not well-known to the crew at Wired, but important for us slashdotters:
Ogg Vorbis bitrate peeling.
Remember how it was going to revolutionise portable audio? Download/rip your music once and peel bits for whatever your application - keep the original for your home theatre and peel lots of bits for your iRiver.
The best Crystal Quest clone i've played was XQuest on my old DOS box. I see the source is out now; perhaps it's time to port it to SDL if the licence permits.
It would be nice to just apt-get install xquest one day.
Not in the New Testament it's not. In Judaism, slaying of certain people was demanded back around the times of Moses and Joshua.
With the arrival of Christ on earth, Love Thy Neighbour took precidence over any past enmity between people. In fact pre-Christ writings (latter books of the Old Testament) are already heading in this direction. One example from the OT: "Do you think I enjoy seeing people suffer? No, I'd rather they repented, and obeyed me".
Islam, however is just about the other way around. Muhummad came along and preached all sorts of lovely peaceful messages, then picked up a sword and said "Right enough talk, let's go cut up some infidel".
That's why we see what's hapenning right now in the likes of the Philippines:
(knock knock) "who's there?" "Are you Christian or Muslim?" "Christian" *BLAM* *BLAM* "Allah Ackbar!"
If Halo2/Win32 is anything like Halo1/Win32, then it will just be a half-baked low-res textured, unoptimized port of the XBox version that no serious gamer will want to play.
A pity, since the original Halo/Win32 (before Bungie got bought out by MS) was looking really good but will probably never see the light of day.
In-ear headphones have been around for fifteen years or so, long before Apple thought of producing and hyping a run-of-the-mill mp3 player.
I didn't see health warnings on that $10 pair of ear buds I bought for my Zaurus a few weeks ago. Should I sue Philips or Sharp if I can't find the volume knob?
At first I thought "hell yes, this is what I've been waiting for!"
But then I considered this:
Where does that $3.95 or $10 or whatever go? Directly to the RIAA, and filtered down to the actual label and eventually the artist.
Now what happens to all the minor labels, the ones that aren't part of the RIAA? I'm not talking about companies like Magnatune that distribute low-bitrate recordings for free, but labels that charge per download?
Since this initiative will inevitibly result in an "I've paid my monthly dues so I can download any music for free" meme, the small labels will be forced to either give the music away for nothing or join the RIAA to get a piece of the pie. Of course this will effectively give the RIAA a total monopoly on music dollars.
I'm not saying free downloads are necessarily a bad thing, but it's just something to consider.
If the amount you eat, big or small, is causing you to gain weight (assuming you're not currently underweight), then it is, by definition, too much.
So even if that person has an over-active fat storage system but an under-active vitimin processing system such that they need to eat twice as much as a normal person to get the same amount of vitimins, are they still eating too much by definition?
Would you suggest they cut down their intake so that they're balanced perfectly on the gain weight/lose weight threshold and end up starving to death?
Quite possibly so, but don't you think it's suspicious how their super powers line up with the original Fantastic Four family?

I for one would have liked to see a bit more originality in the powers area.
I think compact fluorescents are now a no-brainer for anyone with any interest in power management.
If someone's looking at ACPI or Standby appliances you can pretty much guarantee they've already got insulated dwellings, efficient vehicles and compact fluorescents bulbs.
Just try to avoid 'Elite' branded ones. I've had three die after six months use in different sockets.

The Gamecube was specifically designed to do one thing very well: play games. (Whether or not you feel it has games worth playing is moot.)
Perhaps that why nobody buys Nintendo TV game consoles anymore.
They're better off sticking to what they do well - gameboys.
Yes, but I think you're forgetting that the people who buy such cars are idiots.

Sony are making their PlayStation 3 too good.
We must boycott Sony immediately for this outrage!
That's true for the software, but not the OpenGL trademark.
And what of subsequent revisions of the spec? Are they always guaranteed to be open?

Anyone interested in forming an OpenGL foundation?

Or another conclusion:
The depictions in the September 2005 cartoons were accurate.
I think any prior delusions of Islam being peaceful can now be confidently put to rest.
Java would be okay as an option for a typed language, if only it had a decent (read:working) runtime engine that wasn't made by Sun.
Hey it looks like this story isn't regarded important enough to get it's own department.
How about from the did-they-or-didn't-they dept
Yes, I have no life.
You are born
You live
You die
That's it
Really? You sound very sure.
How do you know this? Can you cite references? Perhaps you know something the rest of us don't.
It seems the GIMP project has stagnated, exemplified by some bad decisions in the past (see non-cooperation with FilmGIMP/CinePaint).
Is it time for a fork, a la XFree86/X.org?
What I really wanna understand is the memory usage in Firefox

Gosh, I didn't know BMG were having a hand in the production of the PS3.
You learn something new every day...
How is the parent off-topic?
Looks like he pretty much nailed the ATI / nVidia driver status under Linux, which incidentally mirrors fairly well the situation under Windows.
Which part is off-topic? Mentioning drivers, which are vital to the performance of video on any card, or the fact that the parent runs Linux?
What's more impressive is that he managed to get 3DMark 2001 working at all under Wine!

No one else could get Bill to cough up so much dosh. Just look at how much Bill has donated to charity before and after marrying Mrs Gates.
