Most web sites if they are coded properly see the browser as "Gecko" which is the rendering engine that Netscape 6+, Mozilla, and Mozilla Firefox use. In fact, sites search for Gecko if needed so much that Safari identifies itself with not only "Safari" but "like Gecko"

  8. So? on The Google News Dilemma · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't understand why news sites would have an issue with Google News.

    Think about it...

    1) Google isn't copying the full-text of an article. At most, its the headline and a paragraph...most of the time it is the headline and a sentence.

    2) Since Google doesn't post the entire article, you have to click a link that takes you directly to the publisher of the article. Google News is therefor generating millions of direct hits per month to various news sites.

    3) These millions of direct hits to these news sites means more advertising dollars for THOSE sites. Since I click link on a NYT Headline listed on Google News, I view *gasp* the NYT web site and its particular article. Which means, any ad dollars I generate there go to the NYT. The horror, the NYT is making more money thanks to Google News then without it (not to mention spreading its name out to more readers, who could purchase even subscriptions).

So am I missing something? Why would news publishers have issues with a site sending millions of hits per month at the news publisher's sites, generating far more money then if Google News didn't exist.

  9. I don't get it on Star Wars DVD Box Set Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

The majority of Slashdot readers seem to be pissed about the greatest trilogy of all-time being released on the most popular video format right now.

Yes I know it isn't the original trilogy. But the SE is damn close to being it. Some of Lucas' "improvements" are *gasp* actually improvements! Yes, I know it isn't what was originally released, but this is Lucas' story and he owns the rights, so he is allowed to tinker with it until he is satisfied.

When I watch the SE, I don't vomit, I don't cry, I don't think about some part of my childhood slipping away. The great parts of the movie are still there. Luke meeting Obi-wan, the sunset, meeting Han, saving Leia, Obi-wan vs. Vader, "I am your father", the final duel, etc. It is all there still, just like it was back in the day.

The movies still give me that chill during certain scenes, where they just touch some part inside that you never knew you had.

Yes it might not be the originals, but I'll take 99% of the original on DVD over nothing. Maybe if you don't agree you should go watch again with an open mind. Instead of saying "why the fuck did Lucas change this! It isn't the same!" ask yourself "there must be a good reason for this."

Now I am going to go watch my copy of the trilogy...on DVD!

    A few suggestions:

    1) Talk to your roommate(s) and get a guarentee from them that they will lock the door if they are the last one leaving your place, even if it is to take a dump. You wouldn't believe how stupid many students are...many students at my university actually left their doors unlocked at ALL times (because they were lazy).

    2) If you have a laptop, some dorms come with lockable dresser drawers. You can get a combination or padlock and lock your laptop in there if you plan to be away for the night or longer. Only catch with this is you probably wouldn't be able to leave the laptop on while doing this.

    3) If you have a desktop, they make these cords that actually stick (or as I put it, practically wield itself) to the side of the computer and then you wrap them around something that can't be moved easily (desk, dresser, even bed). You can then lock it, preventing anyone from stealing your desktop without actually physically moving the piece of furnature it is attached to (thus raising the risk of being caught) or cutting the wire (which is extremely tough to do, requires heavy duty clippers that most college students don't own).

    4) See if you can get theft insurance. You might be able to get this for relatively cheap. If you keep regular backups (yeah yeah, I know, a big if), you should be safe.

    5) Have tough passwords on your OS's. At least that way if the computer gets stolen, they can't get to your data as easily (if they are good with computers) or at all (if they are dumb and plan to drop out of college).

  18. My experience on Recent Grads and Experience Beyond the Desktop? · · Score: 1

By far the best way to secure a job out of college is to get an internship. I worked various computer jobs, doing everything from tech support to help desk to web site stuff since high school. At the end of my junior year in high school I secured an internship with a network consulting company. A few months ago, when I was a month from graduating college, I was offered a job from them. The salary wasn't from the dot-com era, but the chances of advancing thanks to getting certified and real world experience were too much to pass up. I was given the opprotunity to start small and really grow. Quite frankly, I have not been more happier with any job.

So basically, your best bet is to get an internship, get some real world experience from it, hope they offer a job when you graduate, if they don't you will have something that looks much better on your resume combined with your new degree.
