I have an immense respect for Mr Fanning. Here's a guy that quits school to try to write code on his own and changes the world. You think the word is too strong? Everybody remembers the Napster days. People burning CDs like crazy, sharing rips of old albums, live concerts, weird one-of CDs picked up in cut-out bins. I made my best compilations during that time. I received awesome CDs from my friends, packed with stuff I had never heard. A guy at work started making CDs with kids songs. Another made the most hilarious Christmas songs compilation. These were people that had almost no interest in music before Napster arrived. I could go on and on... I miss Napster. Every day. Thank you Mr. Fanning.
Too bad there isn't a picture of the early Apple decals that came in the box with each computer. I remember wanting to buy an Apple ][ so badly to be able to have the decal on the back of our car! the glory days...
Well, the harm is: what if instead they had mandated that very student take a 'Build your website with FrontPage' class? or better, mandated that each student uses Passport to sign-on to the university's servers?
yeah, I think you get the idea...
Amazing that this was modded as flamebait. The term toy for MySQL seems appropriate: without transactions and RI you're missing the most fundamental features of a DBMS. Postgres is indeed a very capable database. I started using it 4 months ago and have had nothing but good surprises with it. I come from 10 years of Sybase and Oracle development. So far, POstgres has been great in every aspect: ease of installation, features, documentation. And it does have those key features, and more.
Could not disagree more. At my previous job, it took a team of 5 CC guys to support a team of 50 coders. It never worked right. The *nix support was OK but the NT support was a nightmare. The view concept of CC is great in theory, but in practise, it's a disaster: hours before the final build, everybody is scrambling to verify that indeed the build team is pulling the right files from the right view, etc.
Like in in many other areas of sw development, simplicity is often the best choice you can ever make. CVS is simple. It works. It's easy to audit, it's really cross platform and with so many OSS projects using it, it's worth learning the 5 or 6 commands you'll ever need. The thing that the cvs documentation explains really well is that the key to successful CM lies no in the tool but in the processes and the communication between team members.
It'll crash all the time...

Actually, I've experienced quite the opposite. I used to run Gnome 1.4 and Ximian and I just switched to KDE 3.0. Result: better all around. You can tweak it to just the features you like. It is *really* responsive. And I run this on a crappy 400MHz... In all fairness, I used to make fun of KDE (too cutsy, etc.), but after using it for about a month, I don't think I'll go back to Gnome. Take it for a spin. You'll be surprised how smooth and friendly it is. And fast. No joke. my 2 cents.
Well, the last time that I downloaded Netscape, that it was a 10 meg download and that it beat every other browser was a long time ago! But they're back!!! I'm so impressed! Keep it up!
Great idea, but odd key choices, IMO. Why not go with popular key sets like the vi-style keys or emacs-style keys, or better yet: make it user configurable?
Sorry but I'll have to agree, the casting, the elements of the story are such that it is refreshing to see a movie of this kind with characters and situations the public can identify with. they could have cut the BS with New Yorkers on the bridge (we're not stupid, you don't need to spell it out), but other than that, I tought it was great.
also check out Wonder Boys: Maguire & Douglas are hilarious.

Years ago, I sent 10 letters to every address I could find at Intuit to complain about their crappy software and customer service, 6 months later I received a handwritten letter of apology and a free copy of the software. I bet many people got their ass whipped for not giving a shit before it got the the Prez of Customer Service...
...cos their coverage sucks! the concert would be a long moment of silence.

and it rocks!!!
I just downloaded the app for Win and took it for a spin. Very stable. Very fast. Reminds me of early versions of Opera.
Go lizzard! Go! Kill the round blue 'e'!
I'd like to see what would be left of Lord of the Rings! The opening credits?

It's slashdotted already!
Can't wait to see shots of the blueprints of their new server...
The ultimate list is at: http://www.jwz.org/doc/java.html. It's the ultimate reference. Much better than the O'Reilly article IMHO.
they probably had TuxRacer in mind...

that's what I thought...we've almost won then!
a developer uninterested in Oracle, MS-SQL, Sybase or Informix
OK, so you're not interested in the DB of choice of 90% of the dev. population. Fine. But then it begs the question: why are you writing this review?
I think we'd all could benefit from the opinion of someone that has used at least 2 or 3 RDBMSs!
Your review reminds me of a Woody Allen quote: I took a speed reading course, then I read War and Peace. It's about Russia.
Better luck next time!
as in *RedHat* Package Manager?
It wouldn't surprise me if *they* wrote that stupid worm.

Seriously. And yes, human rights do matter. They want to go to the moon, great, but they should have other priorities.

Keep going guys, in a few years you'll have a real programming language.
