That sigh you heard was everyone who has a crazy/dangerous ex- thinking "Finally, I might be able to keep that nutty fucker away from me and my family!"
If it was found that an everyday citizen knew the identity of someone involved in criminal activity and refused to hand over the name, he or she would likely be found in contempt of court or even held as an accomplice.
Why should journalists be any different? There is no reason to withhold the name of someone breaking a law or contract, short of guaranteeing yourself more dirt to report on in the future.
but that we Americans don't realize that what we may want or consider a "great freedom" here in the US is not considered as important in the rest of the world
Downplaying a freedom as "not important to the rest of the world" could be a great way to keep a populace pacified about not having it.
Not saying that's necessarily the case, but it's a thought.
I've kept box turtles but never longterm. Keep telling myself I"m going to get a sulcata or some other tortise one of these days (like when I move out of my apartment)
Actually I just spoke recently with someone from the Netherlands, who informed me that in the past several years it has gone from what you said to an utter shithole due to inept government
In 4 years of highschool I witnessed a number of confrontations involving parents who would basically call a teacher a liar to their face over the behavior of the student. Nine times of ten the student WAS in fact being a complete asshat, disrupting class, starting fights or otherwise breaking rules.
I don't disagree that in some cases administrators take things too far, but there are PLENTY of parents who simply can't fathom their child misbehaving and become very angry when it's suggested he or she is.
I suspect if a casino had the slightest idea you may be trying to circumvent *any* system they have in place you will find yourself thrown out on your ass.
Jamming every table you sit down at is not a way to stay inconspicuous
Is grinding from level 1-10 really any different from level 10-20, beyond the bigger numbers and fancier spell-effects graphics?
Yeah actually it is. Sometimes.
(I'm going to use world of warcraft as an example cause thats what i play) In WoW you really can't do much in your first 10 levels. You quest, and kill things and get some minor neat gear, but alot of the fun points of the game, like raids (PVP) and instanced dungeons are out of you reach until about level 20. Now, the first 20 levels goes by FAST in that game (which is how it was designed to be) but I could understand someon wanting to get through that faster so they could go on to raiding with their guild or doing instances or what have you.
As for the playing a game that's not fun---plenty of people think the hours per day they have to spend on their character is a direct reflection of how "challenging" their MMORPG of choice is. Witness people who went from Lineage II (which i've also played, and is completely tailored to powergamers) to World of warcraft, and accuse WOW of being too "easy" cause you dont have to spend 8 hour days grinding to steadily progress your character.
The big difference is support contracts. The community college I went to a few years ago had most of their labs full of nice Dell P4s. Talking with the IT guys I found out that if any one of them goes down, the replacement part or computer will arrive next day or two depending on when the call was replaced. Plenty of small stores will offer some sort of warranty on their work but not to that extent. Being a college, Dell's supplier status might have even been determined on the state level as well
There's also the issue of volume. On a large order like that Dell can go alot cheaper on a complete system due to its connections than a local shop could.
Agreed. You would be fired immediately for drinking on the job, I'm not sure why smoking is any more forgiveable; it's definitely more disturbing to work flow and other people.
I had one for a professor last year. Brilliant man but the fact that he would blow off students' questions or even end class early to pop outside to have a smoke was unforgiveable. Not to mention he stank of tobacco and you could find his office by smell (nevermind this was in a RESEARCH LAB with a strict no smoking rule. Damn tenure.)
Consider what a school brings in in terms of ticket sales and revenue from sporting events and you'll see that in alot of places its vital to keep the sports program going cause otherwise you'll be begging in the streets for money to do other things.
I wonder if a woman is more likely to become absorbed in the conversation (gossip, rant, whatever) than a guy would be and thus pay less attetnion to the road than otherwise?
I know plenty of guys who are aggressive drivers, but they're all still alive, so...
In my experience, guys tend to do things like slip through narrow gaps in traffic to change lanes. Girls stop hanging into an intersection where a transfer truck is trying to turn through. Both are dangerous but one is *stupid*, imho.
Sure, all those people who didn't want to fill their iPod for $10,000 ;)

The way I imagine this situation would play out is:
Watch them start to refuse your returns at the desk and tell you it's not their problem, it's your DVD player.

So what you're saying is that your lab mix has a shorter attention span than the cat and that's a good thing?

I don't think your run of the mill octopus is that expensive...
However a salt-water setup suitable for it is going to cost you (unless you have that already, you did say you were into fish)
I think what he's suggesting is that speeding tickets or parking violations dont potentially bankrupt you one way or theo ther.
And what does that have to do with the OS? Seems like it ought be on application developers to fix that sort of thing.

Argh, I misspoke (that'll teach me to post to /. while drinking)
What i *meant* was that students *had* the surveilance and *lacked* the dignity already.

Yeah except public school attendees didn't have either of those two things anyway. Try again?

OT, but, my bro is considering Digipen for his degree. did you enjoy it?

UNC-Charlotte has the same arrangement, if you take any COIT programs you get access to a huge software library
Which campus?

That's great assuming you have a need for any of those extra things.
