and the fact that 'google' has become a verb (like xerox, kleenex, hoover, etc.).
Since when was Kleenex a verb? I have never kleenexed something in my life. Perhaps the submitter meant Windex? I've never heard Hoover used as a verb either.
The 'sending a JPG' to the baby-sitter starts out as a very neat idea, but what happens when baby-sitter has a popular e-mail virus which sends her e-mail to 100 people in her address book? Instant house party? Naturally they would only have the same access time slice as the baby-sitter, but they could just wait until after he/she is alone in the house and walk on in.
Well, as long as you dont label the JPG "SUPER SECRET KEY TO HOUSE AT $ADDRESS" You oughta be okay...sure people will have the barcode, but, how will they know which house it goes to?
How about if the entire microsoft headquarters was set ablaze and all the states attorney generals got to roast marshmallows on the remains? Of course not we all would think that was "unfair".
Regardless of saftey matters, some sort of licensing might be a good idea, if only to prevent people being charged outrageous prices by people who are incompetent and cause more damage than they fix
Personally, I do not think computers need to move towards making things yet easier for the user (instead people need to get a clue!). I do see how this might save some in support costs, but the end result will be dumber users, who now still can't find things, just for different reasons.
Okay, i was checking up on Pricewatch to see the price differences between the R9700 and nVidia's offerings. WTf is up with this GF4 TI 4800? Is it just a version that supports AGP 8x ? Because, it's MORE expensive by 20 bucks than a Radeon 9700Pro (at 232$)
I still agree with whoever (likely several people) said that its pointless to spend so much cash when this kind of polygon pumping power isnt even needed yet. By the time you actually NEED one of these it will be in the 150$ range; the only reason you need one now is the geek equivalent of penis envy
Regarding over use of calculators on mathematics and the lack of learning basic principles...well. You know in highschool? those bubble exams? When was the last time you saw space to show your work? I thought so. It always burned me that my teachers would try to emphasize "trying" and "showing your work" but in the end it was the answer that counted more. and on the exam, it was all that mattered.
As for computer classes. My keyboarding teacher in highschool worked in a mill before she became a teacher. she had a diploma and no degree. Result? she single handedly took down a computer lab via boot sector virus that got trasnmitted around. she also had no clue how to fix things that were broken. later, in 'computer apps', the teacher let me troubleshoot most of the class, becuse they were so clueless that if she helped every last one of them follow the directions that were inthe book, or fix somethin another studnet had screwed up, she woudl have had no time to teach.
3rd edition dungeons and dragons rules are level based, and have a skill set to go with them, that is completely independant for level advances. Typically, "leveling up" represents an increaes in the character's general strength and skill (ie hitpoints and combat, or spells) whereas the skillset was more specific, like the lockpicking you mentioned.
Levels also make a good metric, as someone can show me their lvl 11 fighter, and i have a good idea of about what i can expect to see. in a levelless system you just have to rattle off all your stats, pain in the ass over a chat room, or in the heat of combat.
Now if they HAD overclocked it, now THAT would be cool. Taking the whole thing apart figure out where the controls are, do a little bit of soldering here, voltage mod there, and active cooling on all the chips, that would have been an insane amount of effort though, so we gotta live with this "mere" modding job.
How many chips do you think a paper shredder has in it? that need cooling? I think a better bet would be..oh..say..the motor that generates all the freakin' heat making those cutters move?
Actually, no. Unless your hot neighbor happens to be 15 meters or so across. At least that was the figure i got quoted about the Hubble..probably larger for earth based....
Absolutely nothing. The interference issue is way overblown, particularly for WiFi which uses the same frequency as the microwave ovens that are used regularly on board aircraft without problems.
You're telling me those microwave ovens arent shielded to keep radiation from escaping?
ABOVE commercial traffic?

Okay, so you cant use WiFi on a commercial flight because it has a possibility of jamming the aircraft's comms and tracking. Wonder what, if anything, will be the consequence of flying through medium-high (it has to have a bit of juice to reach 13 miles through clouds and whatnot, right?) intensity WiFi transmissions?
Except for those of us who live where DSL is 49.95 a month, and all the available ISPs are within a fwe dollars of each other, with AOL at the cheapest. And dont forget that brand new computer that came with 700 hours. Free.
Or maybe, just maybe, they're tired of paying inflated retail prices for PC hardware (and perhaps to a lesser extent, games) that can be bought cheaper online
While reading this, am I the only one who kept thinking "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to bind them. One Ring to bring them all, and in the shadows bind them." ??
Well, everyone except one guy who just wanted to let me know how incredibly stupid he thought I was and that he would never have accepted a counterfeit anything.
Make it two. I think you're an idiot for mailing anything worth more than five bucks before your payment clears.

If he was american i doubt he'd be caling it petrol (instead of gasoline or gas)

If that's the case then Pricewatch is being misleading, that heading clearly says RADEON 9700 Pro

or perhaps even taking a slower, more eco-friendly and safer form of transport (hint: trains).
;)
Gotta love those eco-friendly trans-atlantic train lines
IIRC its called the Spectre gunship. Nice idea though.

Maybe so, but there wont be any DX11 games out then either i bet ;)
To all those knocking my paycheck---no i dont make much, i work parttime and go to school parttime
I'll be excited when
1) there are DX9 games available
2) a DX9 compat. card can be had without forking over a majority of my month's paycheck

I just remember telling my brother to try it =D I knew what it did. He OTOH, was majorly pissed.
