Your analogy is wrong. Applying for the trademark application is more like developing weapons technology, not using it. You then have the option to use those weapons if you need to, but also have the option to negotiate if you choose. Walmart should both challenge the trademark application and at the same time make a specific application for their version of the smiley face (which is somewhat unique to Walmart). There is no reason for Walmart to commit to one type of action... just as you can develop weapons technology while holding talks with your enemies. This isn't a mutually exclusive decision.

Yes, these vendors are stating a fact. A new security system will mean a rewrite of the code that was dependant on the old system. That's to be expected. But what they're really doing here is starting the opening salvo in their justification for new versions of their software that they'll foist on the enterprise customers and no doubt make a nice profit. They'll reduce features and blame it on rewriting for Vista. Their will be bugs... and every one of them is going to be, as much as is possible, blamed on Vista. Vista's a scapegoat that the vendors are going to use to shift blame and scrutiny away from themselves and their products.

Are we only in favor of people who agree with whatever view you have adding information? So that the content can become extremely one-sided and skewed? A corporation works mostly because they pay people... so if they have to pay people to protect their image, and correct information on a public form acting within the guidelines of that forum is that wrong? Yeah, actually according to union policy we can only work 40 hours per week without recieving overtime compensation. Also if you work after hours we're to recieve an extra 50% on our normal hourly rate. Unfortunately for us this has created a real problem because most evil organizations prefer to use bad guys in Iraq, Pakistan, or other low cost locations around the world we're non-unionized bad guys will work for a promise of a harem of virgins in the after life. 25. Re:DRM is Unnecessary on Google Music Store Inches Closer? · · Score: 1

Most people don't care about DRM at all. They care about getting their content cheap and easy. They don't mind paying $2 for an episode of Lost even if they can only watch it on 5 computers. Big deal... they got the episode of Lost they missed. I think this is the mainstream. Obviously, it's not everyone... some people hate DRM... some people know where to get copies of this stuff for free and don't mind dealing with the legal consequences. I think as legal, affordable, alternatives to free illegal content is made available people will begin to use it... of course the content owners are going to have to keep fighting the illegal or quasi-legal alternatives (w/ legit legal cases or FUD... either way they confuse the public).

Right now, DRM doesn't entirely prevent music from showing up in the P2P space. It's too easy to copy an unprotected CD or break the DRM. Give it 10 years though and I doubt that will be the case. The media companies are going to keep pushing and pushing for hardware-based DRM and technologies that limit what can be copied. That's going to be an uphill battle for them, but I think in the end we'll see a much more DRMed environment in the next 10 years than we do today. DRM will still be circumvented, but it will be a lot harder to do, and will most likely be very obvious that the non-DRMed media is an illegal copy.
