  1. Re:Drag people in the theatres by lowering standar on Game Music Concerts Spread Gamer Culture · · Score: 1

Game music often just combines the worst of both worlds. Endless tragic moments which you can easily compose with an orchestra and the stupidity of mass compatible simple melodies.

I don't know wtf you mean by mass compatible, but simple melodies are the foundations of great music. I've taken a music theory class, I've done a little bit of songwriting, and I've been playing music since I was pretty young. I can tell you one of the biggest mistakes beginner songwriter is making overly complex melodies when they don't need to be there.

Regardless, have you even listened to some of the soundtracks to video games that have been released today? They're hardly simple. And easily composing for an orchestra/symphony is an oxymoron. Blending dozens of different voices to create a desired effect/feeling without going outside the bounds of any insturments' abilities is never easy.

  2. Re:Killed?? on Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition · · Score: 1

"Killed in Wii-related competition" sounds like she was next to some fat geek swinging the controller around and he hit her breaking her neck. "Wii-related" is only really means "during it's normal intended use".

Maybe it would sound that way to someone who often draws inaccurate conclusions. Think about if she actually died from a flying Wii controller. The editor probably would have put "Woman dies from Wiimote" or something similar. I mean, yes the editor could have been more accurate and replaced the title with "Woman dies in a competition that awards a Wii to the winner". Sounds a little long for a article title doesn't it?

The only other way the editor could have changed the title was to leave out the Wii part. Then people would at first be confused as to why the hell this would be on a slashdot, since people die doing stupid stunts like these all the time.

So the article is accurate, on topic, and short. That's exactly what titles should be. There is nothing over the top with this.

  3. Re:Killed?? on Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition · · Score: 1

True, but in this case it's not sensationalist.

The person who came up with this title used the phrase "Wii-Related" because if the competition wasn't related to the Wii, it probably has no business being on slashdot. Could the editor use better words? Probably. But it's hardly sensationalist.

  4. Re:Do you have no shame Skuttle? on Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition · · Score: 1

Yes, she would have died if it had been tickets, and she had had to drink water to win the tickets for her kids. What's so special about the prize being a console? Any prize could have done it.

It's not really that special, but the reason why this article was posted on slashdot is because it's Wii related. If the competition awarded something else, it wouldn't be on slashdot. That's why Skuttle added that information in the title. I highly doubt he was trying to imply that the woman's death was directly caused by the Wii.

  5. Re:Killed?? on Woman Killed In Wii-Related Competition · · Score: -1, Troll

It's sensationalist and makes it look like someone died using the Wii.

No, it's not. The winner of the competition was going to be awarded a Wii. Therefore, it's Wii-related. The woman who died did in this competition was doing because she wanted to get a Wii for her kids. The Wii obviously didn't kill her, but it does have SOMETHING to do with her death. The title is accurate.

I think your parent post still made a good point.

It took me a good five years with lots of hard work to be able to be a decent programmer and to be able to understand how computers work. When I was a freshman in college, there were about 200 other freshman studying CS. I graduated with less than 20 people. Needless to say, being a well versed with a computer is no easy task.

Both you and the parent poster seem to have this misconception that you can only be a smart computer guy or only a sociable normal guy. The truth is that some people can be both or neither. I've met some really geeky, shy, anti-social people who were completely unable to learn fundamental CS concepts. While the "smart" people who I got help from were actaully pretty outgoing and relaxed around other people.

The truth is that some people are intoverts and some people are extroverts. While many CS majors might tend to be introverts because being a introvert allows them to focus on learning things by themself, it definately doesn't mean extroverts can't become engineers either.

I think the whole "I'm better than you attitude" is just something seperate. I've seen many types of people with this attitude. I like to call these types of people "assholes."

However, after being victim of a fraudulent eBay transaction, I can safely say that paypal really does suck donkey balls.

I bought a laptop for 3 grand and a week later the seller disapears from the face of the planet. I set up a claim on paypal, they gave the guy two weeks to prove that he sent me the laptop. Of course, he never even responded. I could have told Paypal that he wasn't going to respond, but they'd rather let their automated messager take care of the issue. I ended up winning the claim. I got a whopping $175 by winning the claim. I called Paypal. The first time I called, I was put on hold for an hour and I had to leave and hang-up before I could talk to a human being. The second time, I was put on hold for an half an hour and I finally was able to talk to someone. Turns out their are still trying to get my money back. They are apparently emailing him once every 30 days for 120 days. If he doesn't respond, then they will call a collections agency on him. Four fucking months, then they gave me no information about what will happen after that. They also told me I could take the guy to court. I asked them out to do that and the girl said "I have no idea." Thanks alot Paypal.

Fortunately, I called my bank, and they deposited me some interim credit, and they are going to talk to Visa and I will probably get my money back through a chargeback.

Paypal says you're protected from fraud, but that's a bunch of bullshit. If anything I think paypal promtes fraud. I still use it when I have to, but seriously considering another form of payment for my online purchases.

Yeah, your right. The opposition in fact treated the Jews very nicely in those concentration camps. I'm sure if the axis won the war, they would have issued an apology and reperations to them...oh wait, it's kind of hard to issue apologies and reparations to someone whos dead.

Also, I think leaders of the allies should have taken acknowledgement of their own crimes and executed themselves, what kind of loser refuses to have himself killed? ... asshole allies!!

I think it's silly to be angry about games, period. While I can understand why someone who has experienced wars and violence would not be attracted to such games, I think sometimes this simple fact is forgotten: it's a game.

If someone created a game that involved me killing as many puppies as possible, I probably wouldn't play it because I love dogs. But I don't feel any need to be angry about it. As long as the game isn't brainwashing people to go kill puppies in real life then it's harmless.

I don't think people who made WWII games had any intention to make profit off of people's misery. There is a huge demand for these games, because movies glorified this era and made it seem like it was a really interesting time to live in. Is it really that horrible of a thought that people are interested in getting a feeling what is was like to be in WWII, even if it's glorified and they experience atrocities first hand? Game developers are just catering to this interest.

I can't verify this, but I believe if anything, combat games help us release our violent tendencies, more than promote them. Furthermore, WWII games might remind our youngins that there was a mighty brave group of people back in the 1940's made a lot of sacrifices in order to make the world a better place. Rememberance might be the only way some of us can thank these people.

I doubt very many (if any) people who play video games, especially combat/FPS's, were involved in combat WWII. Regardless, I know marines that have seen combat that still enjoy FPS's. While I'm sure some see it as a painful reminder, but I think people need to rememeber they are just watching pixels on a screen.

All the while the media tells us that we can mitigate our unhappiness with new cars, alcohol, and bling. Terrorists attack us on our own soil, we are entering an endless war against a nebulous enemy called "Terror" and Bush says the best thing we can do is go shopping.

Whoa there, back up for a second. While I agree with most of everything that's said here. This paragraph just reaks of FUD and needless Bush bashing. I know that the bashing of Bush is needed quite frequently, Bush isn't to blame for corporate bullying. Capitalism has existed in the U.S. long before W took over, and corpations have always had too much power (probably even more back in the early 1900's). Yeah okay, jobs are being outsorced. What the f*ck does this have to do with terrorism?

Here's the thought process I'm getting from this paragraph

Management is forcing us to do stuff -> Jobs are being outsourced -> TERRORISM IS GOING TO KILL US ALL!! -> Everything is Bush's fault.
