But killing is all there is to most of the new games I've seen.

This shows just how much our society salivates for violence. There are plenty of non-violent games out there, but it seems like all the popular games always involve blowing the crap out of your enemy. Look at the biggest selling games in the U.S. (GTA:san andreas, Halo2, Half-life 2, Doom 3). Nintendo is big on making games that involve very little violence. You would think people might welcome this, but instead, Nintendo is slammed as the "Kiddie game" company.

If there is a problem with video game violence, it's not the video games. It's much deeper than that. "Bowling for Columbine" comes to mind. The U.S. has lower gun ownership per capita then Canada. Yet U.S. gun crime rate is much higher. In the local news, it seems like 90% of the time is devoted to who got shot and where. American movies and TV shows seem to be filled with violence too. Why doesn't that guy go after the film industry too?

What should be done about this? I don't know. But looking at video games as the lone problem won't do a damned thing.

I took a game development class last semester. I learned that programming games is HARD work. Say you're just doing the AI part of the game. Not only do you have to make enemies act semi-intelligently, and naturally, but you have to do it using only so much CPU and memory. In fact, this is true for just about any aspect of the game. To do be able to do this you have know your programming language like the back of your hand, and be effecient as hell. Killing bugs was a total pain in the ass too. Especially when some of the other coder's on my team created some shitty-ass code.

That's another thing: people skills. If you can't work well in a team, then forget game development. You have to be in constant communication with the artists and other programmers if you want the game to come together at all.

I really enjoyed programming for games. But when we had to turn in our game...the game wasn't working the way I wanted it too, and I really stressed out. I got sick the next day...don't know if it's entirely due to the stress but I'm sure it had to do something with it.

After taking that class, I realized that alot of these developers are incredibly smart and creative. It's easy to judge games when you're just playing them. But after taking that cass, I learned to appreciate what these guys can do.

That would be nice. Although at the professional level most gamers already have the best-you-can-get systems and know all the important tweeks. And in the CPL they force everyone to play on the exact same computer and don't allow you to make very many changes to the software.

However, if console games became more competitive and internet connections more reliable and faster...we will probably see alot more online tournaments which dispense cash prizes. I know that Cal-i and a few other leagues do it for cs:s currently, but thats about it.

He went on to explain this function in detail. About after saying "putc" about 8 times the whole class could not hold in their laughter. I had tears in my eyes from holding back the laughter(I was considering leaving the room cause I seroiusly was about to burst.) My professor didn't even have a clue. And I'm not saying take away split screen. I'm just pointing out the if I have the money and theres two different versions of a same game...im gonna probably get the one with online capabilities in addition to the split-screen, as opposed to the non-online version.

Sonny won also because of Final Fantasy X and XI, and the GTA and GT titles. These were some of the biggest selling games in NA. If I remember correctly, more copies of Vice City has been sold than any other video game in the U.S...ever.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the next generation of consoles. Because I don't think Square Enix is going to be so exclusive to the playstation. We are starting to see final fantasy titles weasel their way on to nintendo systems once again. Who knows what will happen with GTA and GT.

Online capabilities is another issue too. I think the fact that the GC didn't have online games really hurt their sales. If I'm the type of gamer that loves sports games. I would rather get an online capable version of Madden NFL. I hope nintendo offers some good possibilities with online play. I'm sick of split-screens.

You're post reminds me of an interesting point. People say Star Wars (especially the new ones) totally sucked ass because of the shitty acting and bad plot. But what other sci-fi movie has award winning performances and breath-taking story. The matrix? The first one maybe. The others were kinda bleh. Other than that, very few sci-fi movies that much better in the story/acting department.

In terms of other sci-fi movies of today. The prequels of Star Wars aren't below the standards of acting/scripting. One reason for this is because most people who watch sci-fi want the visual effects and cool fighting scenes more than a moving, emotional story. I think that's why, even with all the bitching about them, the prequels owned the box office each and every time. Personally I'd much rather watch any Star Wars movie than some craptacular movie based off a really good sci-fi book (Can you seriously tell me I, Robot or Battlefield Earth was more entertaining?) It will be interesting to see how Ender's Game will turn out though. A new Stargate would be sweet too.
