  1. Re:Windows Experience Index? on Couple Bonding Through PC Building · · Score: 1

Adding 1 to the score is daft, I agree. And they should explain the scale better. But it doesn't have to be "out of" anything? As hardware improves that top score of 5.9 is going to get higher and higher. Imagine if they changed the scale so that 5.9 was 10. And then next year: "yeah, but mine goes up to 11". :)

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
    Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
    Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

That hadn't occurred to me. Hmm, maybe it's me being fooled. I admire your cynicism.

But, on second thoughts, I don't think you're likely to be right. For one reason: money. If they make idiots of 12 people then 10 million people (I'm guessing the audience size) laugh and feel good and watch more Channel 4 and buy stuff that is advertised in the gaps between the show. (Okay, maybe 9,999,842 people laugh and 58 people complain indignantly - as is their right).

But, if they make idiots of 10 million people then 10 million people feel a bit foolish and sort of laugh and sort of feel stupid and when the Next Reality Show comes along (as it surely will) then they are less likely to watch and less likely to buy stuff that is advertised in the gaps between the show. (Okay, maybe 9,999,842 people feel stupid and 58 people say "aha, I told you!").

Or, to put it another way, don't buy the hand that feeds you.

I'm going to watch it tonight anyway. It is funny. Maybe a little lengthy, but these shows seem to be designed to fill in the time between adverts.

I guess that is 20 GBP plus what I'm paying now. Still... And I can get 1200 GBP of the Scottish Executive (the government) towards costs for first year I believe. Hmm. You got me thinking. Thanks again.

I live in a sort of spread out Scottish village. About 100 houses over an area of, er, 4 square miles or so. There are no street lights at all. I've no idea where the nearest one is. Maybe 5 miles away (the nearest town). I think there are a lot of people like me; but maybe not a lot of money to be made from people like me. The only options, within the next decade or so, for me are:
    1. move
    2. satellite (ouch, expensive)
    3. line of sight WiFi to somewhere that can get broadband. (big job, might be fun, might fail).
I accept at least some of the blame. I could go and live in a town if I wanted. And 28k isn't as bad as you think... what really pisses me off is paying 30 GBP/month (about 55 USD) for the privilege of a crappy line capped to 70 hours/week. Grumble.

I agree entirely. You can probably safely pull over within 5 minutes - and how many calls are so urgent that they can't wait 5 minutes? Or what about this? Some button you can press on the phone which says "hold on, I'm driving at the moment and looking for somewhere to pull over safely..." Perhaps that could be a button on the steering wheel or something. You could even provide some feedback on how quickly you might do that. As in "pulling over now" or "this is going to be really tricky, why don't you leave a message and i'll call you back". My point is, some way you could make those responses without having to enter a conversation.

What about evaporation? Doesn't really apply to a copper thing, but would a liquid evaporate really quickly or really slowly? And would that mean that the cooling effect would be more or less? (In other words, a wet cat will get cooler more quickly than a dry cat. But will a wet cat in space get cooler even quicker (ignore the effects of the fur - assume, for arguments sake, a hairless cat. And ignore medical problems associated with a vacuum - I guess there's have to be some sort of mask.)
