    That is the bigest load of bs. One of the advantages of open source is that you are able to chuck out ideas which do not work in hind sight since the older version can still be supported. For example, usb support was back ported to the 2.2 series of kernels even though it was in the 2.4 series, The nature of open source allows this advantage. Try getting usb to work on windows 95 or NT and you will see what I mean.

    If you wish to use the old api, just download and compile the old version of gtk+ and use any application that uses this libaray. you will find thay they work fine side by side.

    I think that it is impossible to compare how things work on a closed system and how they work on an open system the way that you have. sorry

    This guy is 100% correct, what Linux needs to be is far easier to install and maintain software. Personally I am sick of biniary distro's of software taking hours to install using rpmfind.net, The reasion precompiled binaries where created in the first place was because people got sick and tired of having to compile source code all the time, even I have better things to do. People aint dumb they just have limit's to their time. Here are my idea's;

    1, leave .tar.gz distro as they are but add a script to update the rpm deb databases ie make register,people are already starting to do this but it should be standardised, However pursume that since you are playing with the source you must know what you are doing.

    2, leave deb's the way they are.

    3, bloat out rpm's to include everything that may need to be installed.

    4. create a standard for install progames so when someone double clicks on it, it does more or less what install wizard does, ie flash a splash screen etc etc. What would be ideal is if this program played some sorta demo or midi track list a shouts out to type deal.

    finally, stop this culture of it aint broke you just dont know how to use it, I mean, I remember when linux didnt support usb and people started posting how it was a useless tech. This is somthing everyone I know has compained about when using linux but cant fix since it is more of a standards rather then software type of prob, calling people stupid rather then admitting it as a fault is just getting old.

    A don't mean to sound like a troll but...

    In America the people who are able to lobby for political power are those which have money PERIOD. Big tobbacco, the NRA, Oil Company's and Hollywood all wilde hugh potical power in Dc not becasue they have the support of the people but because they have more money then god.

    The only vote that I think anyone has nowadays is that of a consumer or a share holder.

    Now while this is the reality, I personally dont think that it is such a bad situation to be in since it is my personal opinion that freedom == econonmic success. For example could the internet be what it is today with out the use of open standards and protocols. It does leave a bad taste in my mouth however.

    If some linux companies could maintain share prices more then single digits then I think that this would provide more political impact then the formation of a lobby group could. While this hasn't happened just let it might not be that far off.

    Yeah I' all for you, However, My problem is not using windows but haveing to support it. Whenever someone comes to me with a computer problem it is always a problem with windows, For example Sircum. People will give M$ and windows the flick, but in the mean time why do I have to solve the problems that M$ created when I dont even like their OS much.

    It the past there was a strong hot rod culture, where people would activily take apart there engines etc etc. However with modern cars, due to the invention of things like overhead cams, this has all but died. The reasion for this is the almost total intergration of part's into cars nowadays. Now couldn't the same thing be said to be happening with computers.

    With almost all the components you need and no doubt in a better box why would anyone assemble a computer today is beyound me. Now with it all one the main board it is starting to seem more and more "hardcore".

    It seem's to me that we are witnessing the end of a era, wheather this is good or bad I leave up to you guy's.

    What I would rather see is a software rather then a hardware solution to beowulf. Right now to make use of a cluster one needs to have the know how to compile software to work in that environment this limits the usage of clusters to people in the know for example universitys. It would be better if more work was done in the creation of a linux distro and some generic applications(no doubt one already exists).

    btw, just IMHO but isn't the whole point of creating a cluster to make use of your old hardware that is gathering dust rather then having to buy a mainframe. Why buy a dozen ghz pentiums when you can get a thousand 486's from a scrap dealer?

    The main problem with the internet is it contains all the information that any person could need but there is no way to access it. Imagine a libarary where all the pages haven been torn out of the book's and placed in a total mess on the ground, then imagine if that pile was in a total state of flux and you have something pretty close to what the internet is today.

    While it is true that there are directories and search engines able to access and orgainaise all this information there is no set stardard to how this information is layed out. If you don't think that this is a problem then go on goggle and type is less then three words and see how much rubbish that you get hits to.

    Today a paradox exists that you have to know what your looking for before you can find it. If TLD's meant somthing then all you would have to do would list all site's with the .xxx extension and go nut's.

    If the internet is to become a usefull medium for normal people then it should be possible to guess the content of a site based on the TLD's. .com .org etc work because of this but .biz dosent becasue of this reasion.

    I hope that this does not become a technological war. It is clear that we are in this mess becasue of the wholesale failure of technology.

    The CIA should have been able to keep a track of OB but that didnt work.

    OB should have been killed by cruse missles but he wasn't. Infact one of the main target turned out to be a drug store.

    The metal detectior should have been able to detect the knifes being take onto the planes but it didn't four times.

    The planes shouldnt have toppled the buildings but they did.,

    The cell phone network shouldn't have crashed but it did.

    Again and again technology has failed. However this is not the most disturbing development. Alreadly the terrorists are being labeled as cowardilly and fanatic this is the exact same mistake that the english made when dealing with the IRA. This is an Enermy that is as at least intellient and resourcefull as you or me and should be treated as such.

    For this war to be won by America only one course of action is really open. The elimination of Islam as a political movement. This means a full scale military invasion with a hugh cost of human life on both sides. This is the reality.

    However, if we cope out to merely sending a few missles and beefing up visable security that will do nothing more then limiting liberity, then the terroists have won.

    Considering that Powell did not march on baghbad and Bush is a puppet of a man who needs a team of medical experts to keep him alive then it is a war that America could easly lose.

    Personally I am really, really, really sick of this whole "computer as a componiant philosophy". Computers will always be distinct from entertainment systems. This is just another technology that noone asked for like HDTV, WAP and Webterminals. The only people who dig shit like this are marketing exec's who fantasise about total market penatration and hardware geeks who what to put linux on it. Not to dis M$ but they seem to be falling into this trap hook, line and sinker with the xbox and now this home station. This thing is never going to float

    Amiga tryed this same idea years ago with the cdtv and it was a complete flop and since then it has been shown over and over again that the market does not what to pay more then $199 for a console with the failure of the 3do etc etc

    Feature creep and hardware bloat are all right if your are a monopolistic software company only interested in crushing any possible competition before they can even gain ground but they are not the things that you what to see in a console. Consoles are simple single use item's that my grandmother could use, who the hell is going to do ten different thing's from it just cause all the games aint worth playing.

    Clearly, at some stage the point of computers got perverted.

    I think that is can be summerised that WindowsXP is both over priced and bloated. However, what version of windows isn't (with the expection of win2000 perhaps). This does not matter since while XP may well fail on the retail side, since what person in there right mind is going to pay more for less, they can still force XP on consumers though OEM distribuion channels. M$ have been sucessful of depriving the consumer of their only right and this is choice.

    America is the most powerful nation in the world today(although I give it 200 hunfred years on the outside) because of one single concept and that is freedom.

    To me freedom == choice.

    M$ with no motivation rather then greed have now made is impossible for people from the same countries that make computer"s to use the software to run them due to cost. This is a perversity. Now there is motivation for hackers of these countries to create their own software industry which could overtake America's oneday. All thanks to Linux ofcourse

    The rule is: that if you crash innovation in your own country then you provide cause for innovation in other. The Japinesness automotive industry ate Americas because of the exact arrogaince that M$ have started to display. To have a software industry dependand on, or owned by one company is a path to ruin.

    but you seem to pursume that the console market is the same as the pc market, M$ forced windows on the desktop by doing deal's with OEM's which forced third parties to write applications for it. Windows became a standard. However, M$ can not force people to buy the Xbox and thus I see them getting a rather big wake up call.

    Just look at all the crap changes they make to movies to please test audience's.

    Plus there is a limit to hype if the product will not sell passed the first few weeks and people in business who have seen stuff like this before and will again and have there livelyhood riding on it will not buy into this in the current environment.

    I'm sorry the xbox has remainder written all over it. It's true that a few people will que to buy one when it is launched but like The Phantom Menence after the third week it will be history.

    I really dont care either or bout Microsoft.

    I admit that I wrote the post rather quickly and should have done a bit more research, esp on the first point. It is not one of my best post's

    but who the hell cares it's only a opinion piece anyway and who what to be involved in some point counter-point flamefest.

    And my opinion, being someone who sell's and buys shit like this everyday (I wont tell you my job but it does involve a commission) I would not stock this product, esp right now, since it will not move and at the end of the day someone has to move unit's

    While it is all right to base a religion on success or failure (be it windowsXP, linux or whatever) of a product since all you stand to lose is a few hundred dollars. I have not got that luxury since I would stand to lose a lot more that that.

    To close in my opinion the Xbox is a dog which will flop.

    I shouldn't replie to a troll but

    You are right that his personal development skill's are questionable but he is a very good manager and that is just as important. In that he hire's the right people, knows how to create and market a frantise, and has a good eye for what is a winner.

    For example Garriot gave Spector and people like him a break in the industry. He countined the Ulitima series though 9 installments with seperate spin offs such as worlds and underworld. Finally he did develop Ulitma Online which was a success for the most part, Since,while it can be considered a failure to begin with did prove that people would pay to pay mud's and that development can be a ongoing process

    99.99999% of the time Orgin's failures where due to the involvement of EA and not Garriot.

    While it is possible to credit his success to being in the right place at the right time (happenstance) he did have the intelligence to know where that place was.

    That the Xbox is gonna flop and flop hugh.

    1, There are few developers, apart from M$ and Bungie willing to develop for it and those that do have little or no console experience. btw who whats to play pc games on a tv anyway.

    2. It is overpriced for a consoles (around $299) and underpowered for a computer 600mh.

    3. It is marketed towards the 16 to 25 market who are the most likely to own a computer and have no use for a Xbox anyway.

    4. It is badly designed for a console, who whats a hard disk in their console, what do you do in case of a harddisk crash.

    5. If you are into that cut down puter, intergrated graphics, sound and processor philosophy then Nvidia are about to bring out the nforce + there will prob be a million clone's even when the thing flops.

    In short, the Xbox takes all the disadvantages of a console, such as the inablity to upgrade, low processor power, closed archtechure and paying to develop for it. While it add's all the disadvantages of a computer like bad design, hardware bloat and poor software implementation (ie directx).
    I predict that M$ will both miss the us release date and not even attempt to sell the thing in japan.
    The Xbox is the bastard child of anti-ps2 vapourware that even the marketing of M$ will never be able to sell.

    First used by John Locke in "On Human Understanding", meaning that all human's are born with out any form of intellect (see slashdot editors) and must learn though experience.

    Ofcourse, this implies that it is a working title.

    But I got a hugh flashback to games like prince of persia and cruse for a corpse from the french developer dophine.

    At the time developers did not have the resource's to create texture based models and thus most of the actors were polygon based, However this didn't matter since the character animation was so good (mainly due to the animation being rendered on the fly).

    IMHO, things like texture mapping (and nowadays bump mapping and vertex shaders) were invented to make screen shots look good . Creating a convincing world is more about animation, voice acting and storyline. My best example for this is half-life (or shelf life as it seems to have become) which used a hacked version of the quake2 engine but added skeletal animation's that created a entirely new game.

    In terms of links I'll say that if the design is a success people will buy the game if not they won't.

    And to the troll's who think that the big N is merely trying to dumb down the game for kids, the character you are playing in the game is like 12 and, dude, you can always buy Tony Hawk 3 | Conker's bad fur day 2 | Any rare game instead.

    I agree with you too an extent, drag and dropping a file would be a pain.

    However, from my experience most people today tend to cut and paste files from one location to another, thus I dont see a problem if someone could grab files from one location and walk over to another and drop it there.

    As for opening applications (the start, k menu or whatever), easy, just bind the 1 to 0 keys to applications and select them as you would weapons in quake. need access to more then 10 applications just use combinations, ie 1 then 5 then 2 for kmail (similer to voice bindings in tribes if you've played that game)

    Since most people spend 99% of their life in 3d they would probally adapt to the metaphore pretty fast or at least as fast as they do to a 2d environment. Anyway the point of my post is that apart from a simple doom mod, and netreallity nobody has really tried

    btw, anyone remember that old amiga game Interphase where you few around a mainframe interacting with controls to guide your girlfriend around a building, that was a sick game.

    Why are all gui's aways 2d. Howcome we dont use 3d graphic interfaces

    Human beings are very good at telling when a object is infrount of or behind another object.

    Plus thanks to the growth of FPS's almost all new computers today are able to run a 3d api of some sort, either directx3d or openGL. So there is no problem on the hardware frount.

    Im not proud i just what using my puter to seem like Im playing quake all the time.

    just a thought.

    I'll put the troll stuff up here just to get it out of my system
    We use Win4Lin, a program that provides Windows-like terminal functions
    dude NeTraverse the guys who make win4lin have just fired all but 5 of there employee's so expect to be using Vmware real soon

    Apart from that this is a good thing. This is becasue all distro's of linux come with development tools which are far better then those on windows. Perhaps we will see a generation of people who completlly skip basic and go right to C.

    Computers are about impowerment and not about the perverse comsumer scean that seems to have developed where people think you have to spend ten grade in licenseing just to do anything. What was it the man said about teaching a person to fish anyway
