I see you have never used Ximian desktop before. You just have big shortcuts on the desktop called 'Internet' and 'Email' It is very very easy. Check out screenshots of Ximian Desktop 2. Based on gnome, and I love it. I use it as my desktop now, and can do anything I need with it.:)
Actually we found re-furb IBM 400mhz systems with 128 megs of ram and 8 gig HDD's, with 17" refurb monitor, for $199 each (monitor + cpu)
We had need for a large number of people to access web based applications, and this was the least expensive way, as Wyse terminals still run about 350+ for one with decene internet access on it. We retired all of our green-screen's, but they are still upstairs if we ever need em.:)
Ahh, but I am an IT manager. And We just rolled out LTSP running on a RedHat server, remote booting 40 PC's in our operations dept. Ya know what I paid for software? They are all running Mochasoft through Wine (200 bucks for a site license) to access the AS400, they use Ximian Desktop with Ximian Evolution to access email. Life is good. I guess these big software vendors are going to have to recognize that when you can get it for free, $100 aint cheap any more.:P
Er, you just provided for a 4000 employee company with under a million dollars of hardware and software. What is your complaint, again?
No, I provided for a SERVER. Now I get the joy of spending $270 or so for a operating system for each PC...
The point is that those kind of charges are rediculous. The cost to the vendor is a whole frikin 60 cents to burn a CD and about 3 - 5 bucks worth of printed manuals (if they dont go cheap and bundle them on CD for 'easy access') It isnt costing a vendor any more to have more end users access their server once its at the customer site, so why the hell do they think they are entitled to more cash?!!?
Screw $100 bucks a user.... If I spend $500,000 on a server with the hardware to support 4000 users, I damn sure dont want to spend another 400,000 dollars on licensing (basically nothing, air, a slip of paper). When I have to spend 300 bucks on a frikin XP Operating system, and THEN get a license just to access the server, something there is wrong (psst.. its called GREED)
ohhh please, you can get an athalon 2000 for like 80 bux now, PC's are dirt cheap! I would say 800 - 1000 for a nice PC with tons of ram and a Geforce4 128 meg card! 3000 dollar PC's are still around if you want bleeding edge stuff, but you dont NEED that stuff to play! running 1600 X 1200 at 200 fps is nice, but everything runs great at 1024 X 768 on my system, and I still have a Geforce3 GTS Asus Deluxe!
On some of the users, I just replaced the OOo icons with their old MS Word and MW Excel icons, and told them they got a new 'updated' version. Most didnt even notice, and if you go into Options and under load/save, choose 'always save as MS Word 97/2000', they will never even know the difference. Never say free tho, or they will think they are getting gyped.:)
We allready use OpenOffice for all our end user's here. Just be sure the Pc has 128 megs of ram, and put the office quicklaunch on startup, or they will complain about how long it takes to start. Otherwise, it works awesome for all standard end user word / excel tasks (99% of end users). As soon as your company gets one of those audit letters, spring the OpenSource and the management will come flocking. =)

bitch bitch bitch, dont ever call them for support and they will never bother you. They are just protecting themselves from this lawsuite-happy consuer nation. Take some responsibility! You either have their warranty and tech support and agree to their conditions, or you suck it up and buy the laptop and never call them. Whoops it broke, you are SOL.
A+ Is the easiest, most meaningless cert there is. Its ALL about experience. When you go for an interview, they dont want some kid outa highschool with his MCP and A+, they want someone who has been network troubleshooting / workin on puters for years. I started with a small company doing on-sight work as a contracter, charging 55 bucks an hour and bringing home 1/2 of that, for 3 years. Now I am a network admin for a national trucking company and couldnt be happier.:)
Barring hardware problems, I have not ever had XP crash on me yet for some un-explained reason. When you take into account how much glit and glitter it has built in, it is amazing it's as stable as it is.
yea, but thats life. Just be truthful, tlel her your not interested. If he is a good consultant, he will be asked back. Sounds more like he is insecure in his job ability to me.
Jesus, your not a victem, tell her no, and if THEN you find you have no work, go to court and try to prove she fired you because you wouldnt go out with her.
Everyone seems to this this is such a problem, just tell her no!:P
In my personal experience, a dual 1.5 or dual 2.0 ghz proccessor is less expensive to put together and faster than a single processor. I would never spend like 600 bucks on a top of the line P4 when I can get dual 2000 Athalon MP's for 150 a piece.:)
1/2 a tarrabyte.... *shudder* Someone really needs to write a snadbox PC software to run these files in before bringing them over to your main PC. Or better yet, just setup a few gig VirtualPC running Windows98 and run it there.
Ohh, my 2 gig image file is wiped out!! *restore* There we go, resuming vix-studio architect.. *dum de dum dum*
All I'm saying is that, there are advertisement spots on the top. I dont care if they advertise, and I even click on them sometimes because I enjoy the site. It just seems underhanded somehow to post a story like this here. How would you feel if you saw a CNN news post about a new product wit ha great beg glowing review underneath it??
Anyone else think/. is selling out? I wonder how much they got for posting a blatent advertisement on the front page in bright garish red? I dont blame em, just dont be so damn obvious.:P
The screen shots look like Doom3, most excellent! I hope they did well on the gameplay and its not all eyecandy, seems like more and more games I play look awesome and last about a week before they are boring and repetative.
And why purchase if you have such high volumes? Look around for a leasing company. We use a local company, and have a Canon Imagerunner 8500 (85 ppm) and have put over 1.5 million copies through it in the 7 months we have had it. Its not color, but the concept is the same. Look for a local leasing company and see if you can get a non-profit discount, our cost per copy is about $.02 per printed page, and that includes toner and all breakdowns and on-site service.:)
When you get a bittorrent link on the front page os/., that is really when the whole model goes to do its work. I'm sure all the main download sites are not recieving any more requests, but bittorrent is clipping along @ a nice 90 k / sec!:) Go Bittorrent!

The sad thing is that this will probably be purchased by Microsoft and called BOB....

...how much this is going to effect their subscriber base. I would leave them for sure if I saw my ISP doing this kinda stuff. :P

I think the best idea would be for a brand new suite that integrates everything in 1 from microsoft! We can call it Microsfot Bob XP!!! :)

Here's hoping for a good one!
