Google can't just refuse to do business in China. It is a public company, not doing business in China means lower dividends, which means the stockholders fire their CEO and hire someone a little more china-friendly.
Guess what, I'm not a citizen of China and I do not intend to tell them how to run their country. Nor would I expect a Chinese company working in the US to break our laws. Guess what, you may not like it, but we don't get to tell everyone how to run their countries.
Someone explain to me how complying with the law of the land is evil?
The US Patent System is a joke. There really isn't anything more to it than that. We patent everything then insist other countries respect our patents. Then when they dont we take away their allowance.
Do they matter? Of course they matter. If they didn't matter we wouldn't have had 3 topics on slashdot about the same issue in a week. But we did, and you know why?, because we not only like to LOOK at booth babes, we like to discuss them. If it didn't matter this wouldn't have been an issue in the first place. Personally, I like to see a little ass being flaunted around; I'm just not shallow enough to think it is anything more than it is. You got a hot chick with big knockers and your both then hell yeah I'm going to stop by. Everyone wants to be PC about the shit but the truth is it does matter and booth babes do attract people to booths. The only thing banning them does is prevent us from oggling booth babes!
The EU market overtook the US market in sales. They are comparing markets not countries. The EU works off the Euro and the US off the Dollar. You might argue that it should be EU v NAFTA but that is a stretch given we dont share a currency with Mexico or Canada. Either way, the key is that they are comparing markets and not nations.
I just do not understand how the author can claim that the debris in space is going to increase after 2055 even without future launches. If that is the case then it certainly is much more than a man-made issue. That just doesn't make much sense to me at all.
He also pointed to statistics that show the United States graduating only 4,400 mathematics and science PhDs each year compared with 24,900 math and science PhDs for greater Asia."
4400 to 24900 is a ratio of 1 to 5.7. The US has about 300m people so, apply the ratio and you figure we have the same % graudated, that is 1.71 Billion. Given that the population of Asia was 3.44 Billion in '95 and is estimated at over 3.68 in 2000 (http://www.unhabitat.org/habrdd/asia.html) I would say that we are actually graduating mathematics and science PhDs at twice the rate of asia. Note: There may be a distinction between Asia and Greater Asia I do not understand and my population numbers are for Asia as a whole.
Yeah, a top-10 list of WW2 games is likely to involved some German killing. For the record, however, most of those games also involve American killing too. Oh, and those aren't necessarily the most popular, just the most popular WW2 games, which means your reference is biased. I would say that BF2 is more popular than either of the WW2 versions of BF you had listed. Your point is well taken, that video games depicted wars involving Germans may, on occasion, depict a German dying. That doesn't prevent us Americans from bannign the same WW2 game because you can pick up a Luger and kill the Yankees.
I have any even better idea. Forget he is a CS player, he is 19!!! Let's ban 19 year olds from public places without an identifying mark. THEN let's ban violent video-games. Finally, as the youth had brown hair, we must either burn the brunettes for our own safety or intern them somewhere. This kind of generic labeling IS what caused the halocaust. It is sad to see that the Germans have not changed.
"19-year-old gunman Robert Steinhaueser was an avid Counter-strike player, leading to calls to limit violent games in Germany." There are MILLIONS of counter-strike players but if ONE commits a violent crime then ALL games must be banned? I know I'm going to take some flack for this but this seems like the same logic as: "If one Jew commits a crime then Judaism should be banned so let's have a halocaust." I KNOW it is messed up to say but I hope the point is not lost.
Maybe my logic is flawed but...
Human beings are pattern recognition machines. Our worldview is nothing but the collection of patterns. Cars drive on the streets, padestrians walk on the sidewalk, planes are in the sky, these are patterns. If you see a car on the sidewalk this is clearly out of the pattern and indicates that we should note the incident. Specifically, we reassess the pattern in light of the new information by comparing it (car driving on the sidewalk?) to our previous knowledge (cars drive on roads, on wheels, etc.) and decide if this needs to be updated in light of new info (someone dyes their hair, this breaks a pattern, now we have to update in light of new info, and we now recognize that person (or their pattern) as having red hair).
Our response to a situation (which is just an abstraction of lots of patterns) depends primarily on previous, similar experiences. This underlines the pattern-forming (habit forming) nature of us pattern-recognition machines. We know at 7:00 we need to wake up, that is the pattern. We know next is a shower, brush-teeth, etc. But, our favorate road is closed, we must reevaluate the situation, find a new route, and, if this is a long term thing, update our pattern to reflect the change (if short term you should remember it tomorrow I hope).
What drives our reaction to these patterns? Chemical desire. We go to work to make money to buy food to satisfy a chemical need. We have sex, exercise, smoke pot, and play video games. In turn we must date/socialize, keep up that gym membership, pay our dealer, and pay our electric bill. Paying our electric bill is an addiction in that we need it to stay warm (satisfy Psyiological needs), and continue in our patterns (habits) such as watching tv (addiction), playing games (addition), or doing improvements to your house (addiction).
My point in all this is that people are habit-forming by nature. What differentiates between what we commonly call an addiction/habit is that it is negative. Running is an addiction but is considered ok. Basketball players are atheletes, not endorphin addicts.
So, what is the distinction? Common morality. I do not mean morality! I mean the pattern of morality that is recognized by those across a particular community. In Amsterdam smoking pot is not out of the ordinary and thus not against COMMON morality. I use this term very very loosely for lack of a better word as legalizing (not smoking) pot can easily be considered moral by both deontolical (doesn't hurt anyone but the user) and utilitarian (we spend BILLIONS on keeping pot dealers in jail) means. My point is not whether it IS right or wrong but whether or not it is outside the PATTERN.
This is why video games are considered addictive and football is not. If you lived in Korea (with a different common morality than above) you will find that video game 'addiction' (our standards) is the norm there and they actually have multiple TV stations dedicated to video games. Here gaming is a sport not an addiction. The truth is...
Everything is based on pattern recognition and pattern forming. As a result, everything can be habit-forming and become an addiction. The only difference between hobby and addiction is the perspective on whether or not activities are 'healthy' under 'morality' but this is done at the macro level and not necessarily reasonable.
Our society runs on addicts. 95% of the US are workaholics. Most of them follow the same pattern day after day and become 'addicted' to their pattern of life. They just don't get called addicts because working is considered (and is) a very moral thing.
So, I've ranted, my bad.
Your rat analogy is bad...
Games have a VERY clear sense of rewards/punishments. In fact, it is much clearly what the goal of a game is than the goal of real life. It is this clear sense of purpose that drives many to play games. If the punishment/reward is not consistant then people will go to another game out of frustration.
Rats will hit a button all day to try to get food if it works only some of the time. People playing a video game where they only get a frag count increase sometimes when they kill another player they will either a) not by this flawed game in the first place or b) switch to another game.
Game Addiction frequently IS drug addiction. How many times to you join a game just to be up against 'weed?', 'bong420', and the highest fragger 'StonedShooter'. Meanwhile, that asshat DrunkFlamer is just tking everywhere. I know that I, for one, like to get STONED AS HELL before I play some ET or Lineage2. Why the similarities? Both are escapes from reality. But, remember that they are not necessarily exclusive.
Well, we've had a lot of engines come out recently such as the new Half-Life, Doom III, etc.
Games are usually built on such engines because the licensing fees greatly reduce costs over writing your own engine. It seems to me that there will be no main-stream use of dual-core processing in gaming until the engines start taking advantage of it.
Some games, such as WoW, where they build their own engine could begin taking advantage of this sooner but we will not see this in mainstream gaming until the next set of engines come out. Then we're going to have to take a look at whether they run dual-core or, likely, those new fangled cell processors.
If you're moving to a new country I do not think that breaking their laws is a good way to get started. If you are going to move to China then you have no right to complain about the laws. We'll leave that to those born there. If you beleive that a country's policy on *insert problem here* are wrong then you have a choice... you can either suck it up and go by their rules or you can go to another country. Stop thinking that because you dont like thier system you can ignore it. Next thing you know they'll come over here and start thinking they can censure our newspapers.
This article is dated March, 2004. Hope that provides some context as the mentioned article should allready be published. Further, I imagine there has been more recent research into the field in the last year.
I have an idea. Let's eliminate the jobs for hundreds of lineman. That way they can move into low-income housing with faster internet they had before they lost their house. Its win-win.
I had to leave the field for just this reason and hundreds more of these jobs are appearing everyday. Noone seems to realize, though, that such rapid improvement puts many of the people who have been working hard for years to bring you quality service our of work.

By that logic neither can a computer...

A human brain can not multitask because you can only concentrate on one thing at one time. To 'multitask' you must use short-term memory to store (as a pointer) information about another task. You must constantly move tasks in and out of short term memory as you act on them.
The disadvantage is people can remember about 7-8 unique items. That is why Bell made phone numbers 7 digits long after lots of research into remembering those numbers. If you have 3 things in your temp-memory you're screwing your working memory by only have 4-5 objects available (though you can start grouping sets of numbers as abstract objects to store more info).
By this logic a computer also cannot multitask. That is, a computer only does one thing at one time and everything else is in working memory (RAM). A processor can add, subtract, XOR, and all kinds of cool shit but only one operation can be done at one time the same as a brain.
So, if we cannot multi-task then I would argue that neither can a computer. This, however, undermines what, I assume, the discussion had assumed by the meaning of multitasking. If you argue that a computer has the ability to multitask because of a larger temp-memory you must realize that people may also expand their memory by writing something down and allowing it become a literal part of their memory (if through an abstraction). We may also increase our memory through tools such as grouping strategies (acronymes or using your birthdate to remember the number (19)xx.
There is a third game that should be included in this discussion and that is Lineage 2. It is a MMORPG produced by NCSOFT (another story about them today) and is based on the Unreal engine. Pushed out almost 6 months before EQ2 or WOW it was all kinds of buggy. Memory leaks, people falling though the world, or its occasionally taking up any and every resource it can find. The game itself is full of bugs and in game errors. There are places where you can get stuck and cannot move. You can still breathe under water. You can use a bug to break into castles as well as private clan houses. These are just a few.
However, they've managed to build a big fan base and they're releasing Chronicle 2: Age of Splendor to compete with the new rivals. Lots of the holes have and will be fixed and new features and levels will be everywhere. It should be by far the furthest ahead and fullest of any of the MMORPGs.
The problem is, there are a lot of fundamental flaws in Lineage 2 that cannot be fixed because the game has been released and must be kept running. That leads to long term flaws and limits on the game engine itself. As a player myself I feel that it was rushed and could have been vastly cleaned up before release.
However, unlike other games constant patches and updates based on real players beta testing has and does work effectively as the holes that can be fixed are. EQ can have holes and bugs everywhere but they can be fixed as the game is updated. There is a fee for playing these games and that is so they can update and add to these games on a regular basis. This blows previous models out the window because patches are automatic and required to continue use. That means that the game is in constant production throughout their lifetime. If Lineage stays on pace its set to be about a 6 year game (12 chronicles). That means that increases in memory can process speed can be taken advantage of and new features can be added and improved. So, 6 years from now we'll have a very well developed game to close it out.
5 democrats and 5 republicans is bi-partisan but not un-biased. Why should a panel be run by politicians at all? Let's put the same dualist oligarchy in and it is biased and it is unfair.
How are the nations of Africa working together to promote technological growth? Are there any common intiatives in place or will there be or are the nations still working independantly instead of building a common infrastructure? Are the current methods succeeding or do you beleive there should be change to the way the continent is approaching their technological challenges whether they are seperate or cooperative.
Dell is Austin's biggest employer. University's like to give back to their town and area, endearing the locals. Also, by pumping more money into the area it becomes a better place and more people would be willing to come there. I'd be willing to wager that most, if not all, of the work was done by the local Dell plant. This isn't a coincidence guys, this was more than just a business deal, it was giving back to the community that supports the school.
Tell the mother fuckers to use hexadecimal instead of base 10. It makes a hell of a lot more sense to use if you're doing anything related with the ip other than using it to access something. Its a bitch to translate decimal into binary while hex is easy as shizzy. If I had my way I'd rewrite human nature and switch everything over to base 16. I wouldn't, however, use A,B,C,D,E, and F, I'd use new symbols.
It may actually force them to cut down on their searches! As a matter of fact they may go from the 'literal thousands' to a few hundred. There is NO reason for this many searches on an ISP. What to do, make Judges issue warrants, cutting down on the number of searches, and making a police presence during searches less than a burden.
