Ask the Canadians about hard wood lumber

    Okay lets try.

How do you feel about hard wood lumber quantaman?

Thank you for that question quantaman, Well I strongly object to them, the U.S. has been trying this for years and every time it gets struck down by a NAFTA tribunal (or is it a court can't remember), either way I heard the ruling was supposed to be due this past thursday but got delayed, hopefully it will come out soon and the insane (23%) tariffs will be gone. I've heard that the American complaint seems to be that the Canadian government didn't make the lumber companies pay for the trees or something but the Canadian system just uses a different method of payment (stumpage fees), the main reason why the Canadian lumber industry was so much more sucessful is because of a massive modernization a few years ago and probably also low labour costs due to the low Canadian dollar, why should we be punished for your over valued dollar?

If you haven't figured it out yet, Free software is free.
Really? Well I was under the impression that you can pay for GLPed software! Besides you ignored the question with regards to BSD based software, do you want to pay tariffs for OS X?

They raise the price for their own citizens whose per capita income may already be below the current price of many applications.
Yeah, those poor western Europeans (whom I was thinking of).

Do you expect the next generation of Americans make their living playing first person shooters?
No when due to free trade other economies like South Korea and India raise their standard of living by actually being allowed to make money by selling to the U.S. start wanting their own products and services then the next generation of Americans will haev to fill that need. Hey that kind of sounds like capitalism! The fact is that with trade everyone benefits, including you! True you might suffer a little bit at first while trying to adapt and at the end you might not still be the allmighty super power but your standard of living will be higher, and isn't that what's important?

I am an American and tariffs on offshored code would benefit me and all my countrymen. Perhaps you have your own reasons for wanting to see a weak America, quantiman Al-Husseini. Yes I will excuse you for being naive, but only if your highest level of education was a taliban religious school.

    Tariffs hooray!

Don't let that nasty Free Trade concept get in the way! Oh yeah and how do you plan to do this? What about free software? Do we pay only if we pay for the distro, are we off the hook if we download it for free? Ok, maybe we only pay the tariff if we buy the distro. What about BSD code, do you now have to pay a tariff everytime you use something that was BSD derived because it might of been coded outside the US? What happens when the rest of the world slaps tariffs on US software? How much yuckier would this make internet dealings in general?

Excuse me for being naive but I had hoped that we in the tech community had left this kind of thinking behind.

Linux is just the kernal, GNU/Linux is the entire OS which includes both the kernal and all the GNU tools and stuff. SCO is only talking about the kernal so in that case they are right in just saying Linux.

It takes time for the OEMs to jump on board. You need to find a good distro, negotiate with the company, test it with your machines to make sure everything works properly, train your staff so they know what to do when some customer calls with problems about it, then finally decide how to market the thing! You also need to wait to make sure that MicroSoft is actually playing nice before you risk seriously screwing yourself by ticking off the supplier of the OS for every machine you sell. Remeber the story about the scorpion and the frog? If I were an OEM I would eb damm careful before messing with M$. I think the fact that SCO hasn't stopped distributing the code that they know is under the GPL means they've effectively GPL'ed it regardless. That still doesn't clear up the possible issue of IBM breaking their agreement but Linux should be in the clear.

It doesn't matter. The vast majority of people use defaults no matter what, a good portion of the rest will think "Hmm well MS is a super huge company so I'm sure what ever they make will be really good quality and be so much better than the competition". Don't count on them pick up on the search time as they'll probably attribute any difference to the internet being slow. Also sure as heck don't expect them to really notice the differing quality of search results, for one it's a completely subjective category and another you they likely won't even pay close enough attention to notice the difference. It's simple enough, integrate it into the OS, (something similar to Sherlock? been a while since I've used it), and make it the default anything on the windows box, home page too, really the average new user has no desire to change any kind of settings with their computer for the simple reason they don't really understand them. A search engine is obviously a good choice for a home page, make it your search engine and they're likely in your palm forever. Given the resources MS has and the actions they've been willing to take in the past combined with the courts unwillingness to stop them they would be fools if they didn't become #1.

Funny, I've just finished repairing the rpm database for the nth time. I tried to install Python Base which was required for bittorrent but got a conflict from python-2.2.2-26, so i tried erasing that which gave me a stream of other conflicts and apparently did earase anyways since now up2date and half a dozen other utilities don't work because they're getting python related errors. Now neither reports being installed... well that isn't quite true, when I try to install python-base it won't install because in conflicts with files from python, and when I try to install python it conflicts with files from python-base. Oh yeah and Evolution is trying to send mail through a server belonging to an account which I tried to add but later removed because it didn't work. Also the java compiler has started giving errors about unreachable statements it didn't give before and the virtual machine now crashes before launching a gui (python related maybe?), i tried installing the 1.4.1 sdk but the installer appears to crash at the end... seems to have installed all of the files but never reports finishing, using the new javac and java the problems are unchanged. However go back a few weeks ago and I couldn't be happier with it but now I'm slightly frustrated. In short anecdotal evidence based on a single machine doesn't mean a whole lot.
