You make a perfect virtual copy of yourself. The copy is happy and immortal and everything, but *you* are still stuck in your body. *You* haven't gone anywhere. You've just been photocopied. GW could not get ANY benefit during the course of his presidency, even if elected for a second term in a straight blood-for-oil trade. It would take over 3 BILLION barrels of oil at $30-35 ber barrel before it would even match the $100B estimate for the cost of the war, and that would only work if we flat out stole the 3B barrels.
Oil companies won't be footing the bill for the invasion of Iraq; American taxpayers will. The cost benefit ratio is actually quite good when you realize that.

I don't think anyone's that the war would be of any benefit to the *United States* itself. It'll be of huge benefit to oil companies who will take very good care of Bush et al when they're no longer in office. They get all the benefit of the invasion and none of the costs.

Wow! This would be a great way to completely alienate all of our allies, infuriate already borderline countries like Russia and China and further inflame the psychotic passions of the fundamentalist Muslim community.

THAT is what stops us from simply taking over Kuwait. Remarkably enough, it's more or less the same reason that Saddam Hussein wasn't able to simply say "Kuwait is mine."

If it were about taking out a madman, we'd be fighting wars all over the place, starting with China and North Korea. If it were about democracy, we wouldn't be publicly selling out the Iraqi Kurds to the Turks.

Once we take over Iraq, oil companies are going to get very good deals on oil from the interim gov't there, some will even get lucarative contracts to rebuild the infrastructure we'll blow up during the invasion.

The troop carrier thing is easily fixed.

If you don't need more troop carriers, obsolete the design and the AI will stop building them.

Also, it helps to have more than one ship design at each hull size. Planets will frequently build the largest ship that they can make. For a lot of less developed planets, troop carriers are the largest ship they can make. Give the AI something else to build and it'll build it.

The AI does what you tell it to do very competently. Unfortunately, the manual sort of left out how exactly to tell the AI what you want it to do.

During the Gulf War, Iraq attempted to launch terrorist attacks on American targets but they proved to be fairly incapable of doing anything on their own.

Today, with war a near certainty, Iraq is outsourcing its terrorism to fundamentalist groups, most notably in the Philippines.

Prior to this, Islamic fundamentalists and Hussein hadn't worked together because, well, Hussein is an "socialist apostate" who'd been using his chemical weapons to kill countless muslims. With the US bearing down on both of them, they're now entering into an temporary alliance of convienence.

So basically, our "war on terrorism" is forcing into existance the kind of alliances we presupposed going into it. Fantastic.

Gasaraki had a decently realistic take on the giant robot genre that I liked.

The TAs & Fakes weren't particularly huge. I think they were only 10-12 feet tall. Not much taller than a tank. They were designed for urban warfare and could even enter builings. They could run faster than tanks and were more agile so they could take on a tank division in the field if they had the element of surprise.

Another break from giant robot conventions was that they didn't add any new mech designs throughout the series. There's a funny (text) interview on the DVD where the designer describes how the merchandising department got freaked out when they found out there were only a couple mechs. The designers reasoned that the TA and Fake designs would be in service for at least 10 years, though some variants might show up in a few years. But that would all be beyond the lifespan of the show.
