I'm not making my point very well, I know exactly what SF is, but I imagine Drupal implements more than enough functionality to present itself, which is what I imagine they are after.
But yes, SF would give them everything they need with none of the headaches.
Well, whilst sourceforge is a great resource, it is a CMS and using it to host a CMS one has developed may give the impression than one's own CMS isn't up to the job.
At very least this may be their justification. Personally I'd have used sourceforge and hope users were with-it enough to understand why.
I don't think anyone doubts your sentiments in an ideal situation, nor do I think that Slashdotters in general are a naive as you make out, whilst passionate an a little biased, Slashdotters do seem to have good knowledge of the realities of the business world.
The passion and [every so] slight bias is what open source software is all about and these fundamental properties of the people involved also provide a lot of tollerance for emerging projects suffering the odd failure.
Drupal appears to have a good offering to the OSS community and is obviously outgrowing it's 'hobby' roots and I'd like to think they were making preparations for this transision before it was suddenly forced upon them by the failure of their host.
Whilst all projects, large and small have to develop contingencies for the un-expected, until they recieve good financial backing from donations or the corporates who would seek the level of service and support you suggest it can be difficult for the average joe with a good idea to protect themselves against everything. However this most certainly should not put such people off developing their ideas for the benefit of the community.
The afore mentioned tollerance helps this process and has created a unique environment for us all to freely express our ideas.
I've been a contractor for the last 7 years and before that I worked for a sub-contracting company and I feel it helped prepare me for the frequent change in environment a contractor typically experiences.
It may be different elsewhere but in the UK I would be very suprised if any company employed a grad in a 'senior' position and the parent poster is on the ball, go for the money, not the title and give yourself more rungs in the ladder.
businesses to send a solicitation by text message to a cell phone when its owner wanders within range of those merchants.' Oh, wonderful, cellular popups..."
Could be interesting when you pass that 'massage parlour' you never knew was there;)
If you are working for a company then I imagine you'll be expected to take on or at very least put up with the ethics of that company, you can stand by your principles and quit, making your reasons calmly and clearly known.
I'm not entirely sure where the law stands on an employer who gains your services by describing one job spec, then when you are onboard expecting you to do something completely different, something which may have caused you to not waste your time in the first place.
I imagine creating some sort of 'affiliation' which could be listed on a CV making clear what the members find 'un-acceptable' in a development environment could work very well, but I have no idea as to such a setups legal standing should it come to the crunch?
You just have to wonder on the ping time to a server on mars, and you're gonna have to be pretty confident in the OS not to fail, its one hell of a support call to NASA to hit ctrl-alt-delete;)
Hmm, whilst the shuttle, boosters and feul tank
were totally destroyed in seconds, the crew cabin remained
intact, and took 6 minutes to fall to earth and
it is strongly believed (inc by NASA) that all the
astronauts survived the explosion but died on impact
with the ocean.
By comparison... sub at 1000 feet, chink, crack, bunkle, squish!
Go for the special foriegn language monitor for english tourists... it will help buy just SHOUTING what you want SLOWLY and CAREFULLY in the hope you finally UNDERSTAND;)
The guy in my local computer games store telling me I should replace my ps2 with an XBox because 'Microsoft are far more reliable at fixing bugs and delivering patches' and apparently 'No, they wouldn't charge gamers for said updates or release an in-compatible games box in 6 months to replace it'
I like the idea of multiple processors in a single 'unit', but wouldn't the main problem be over heating? I mean a single Athlon processor needs a massive heatsink/fan anyway?
Ah someone with some knowledge, spoilsport, just as this thread was dipping into comparisons between the House of Lords and The Nazi party ;)
Although perhaps without the availability of captured 'enemy' personnel to experiment on.

I know what you're saying but don't you think it would be a little like Ford giving their sales force vauxhalls as company cars ;)

Because people buy them at those prices.
Excellent advice imo.

I always rather liked WordStar, never got on with Wordperfect. Damn I'd like to find a copy of Wordstar 4 for *nix. Just for old times sake.

When the fuel runs out..... the earth!
Isn't that what Javascript is meant to be for?
Or head butted him?

Yeah, I have that watch too, but what amazes me is the new 'Tangable' feature of the watch in the article.
Do you have a 'POKE' for the Amstrad CPC to allow this too ? ;)

I can guarantee that the first thing a slashdot reader thinks when he reads any article is... 'I hope nobody else has had time to comment yet!'
Oh well, it won't be the first time a better OS has lost (think VMS)
I think this article should really show that it's certainly not time to write off Freebsd...
You don't feel 8 year old girls are interested in shoot-em-ups?
