Back in '96 I made a fake web page(on my university account) that sold hacker/phreaker gear. Red boxes, blue boxes etc. I did my best to make it look legit. I also had some more obscure items, like Game Boy cartridges that did red box tones, and other fun things I could think of.
Mind you the product drawings were almost MS paint quality.
One of the items I sold was a "katana" laptop computer, with CPU speeds about twice of the fastest CPUs of the day. Also, it said you could buy the laptop in person at our outlet store in New Tokyo.
Needless to say regardless of how amateur the page looked, I got emails every day from people who believed it. Most of them wanted the price on the katana. To think if I was a shyster I could have been swimming in credit card numbers.
The problem is, while download speeds may increase, I sure as hell not seeing any upload speeds of websites(whether it's mom & pop or big biz) increase.
We see the slashdot effect all the time. I don't think increased download speeds will help it. We'd just get "unavailable" messages quicker.
The problem was, most of the jokes fell flat. Much of its content was just the usual bickering within a dysfunctional family.
The only thing I found funny was the Tommy Vicetti look-alike that randomly punched out the father in the mall.
I was hoping for more video game-esque jokes in it. For example, when the kid was going down the escalator(rail grinding), I would have had a cheesy balance-o-meter hover over him for the full Tony Hawk joke effect.
There was also a cameo by Crash bandicoot on the "got milk?" ad.
The Turbo character was disapointing. He's like a second-rate bender with his lie, cheat and steal ways.
The whole episode contained less humor than the "What if video games were real?" episode of Futurama, or the "real life GTA" on Dave Chapelle's show.
There's tons of video game related humor on the net(from Red vs Blue to Homestar Runner) and it beat Game Over by a long shot. UPN needs to hire THOSE guys as writers, and leave the mainstream comedy dialog out.
I would be happy if they made a decoder box(I have Comcast) that would just let me de-list the channels I don't want to see. I mean, I don't wish to scroll 20 Womens NBA channels to see what's on HBO(coming from the beginning of the list, channel 2).
Hey, it's not like I could play all those obscure 80s games(ie the ones not emulated on PS2, or those tv-game consoles) now, or legally buy them. Many of the vendors I assume are out of business.
has to be SOCOM. The messages for sending out a grenade, for example consist of a guy just saying plainly "outgoing!". All the other messages are just as dull and too clean sounding.
I prefer the voice messages(the game-made ones) in UT2004 where there's a bit of static, etc. Sounds more like a handheld radio transmission.
Well seeing that the commercial emulator packages(some good, some bad) only cover a very miniscule percentage of the total amount of arcade games ever to have existed, the only way is to warez them.
I can't get enough playing obscure early 80s arcade games that never achieved the popularity of pac man or defender. Some are quite original.
Now trying to get the roms off of Soulseek is a bit of a chore.
I once tried it with the Trashmaster, but my mistake is when you start shooting goons near the truck, always a tire gets shot out in the process.
Then when you try driving a trashmaster with busted tires, it handles like it's on a ice rink.
I also made the mistake of not grabbing Diaz's everything-proof car after Angels. Innovative for the game designers to give you a reward for failing a mission.
I would like to see more dynamics with the pedestrians. There's o so much they can do with the virtual city they have.
how about..
1. People getting in and out of cars? We only saw this to a limited extent(cops getting out of cars, carjackigns, etc). How about taxis that pickup/drop off people at random?
2. Different behaviors for different kind of peds? Some would be cowardly, some would be valiant, and some would be just downright crazy, all gang members aside.
3. yes, more indoor locations.
4. I haven't gotten to it yet, but looks like a lot of people got frustrated with "The Driver" mission. I got stuck several times of Death Row, but eventually figured out a plan: take the chopper to get to the junkyard, and fly him to the hospital. If you fly westward a bit, Diaz's Comet car-driving thugs get stuck(since they take a linear route) in the entry area to the junkyard.
Either way, I'll be buying it the minute it's availble.
Here's my idea of a dream setup: the best of both worlds. The consistent GUI of Windows or Mac OSX, and then the rest of it consisting of all that is good from linux(stability, etc).
I envision mullet computing. Windows/Mac in the front, Linux in the back.
I love how I have some nice GUI configuration options for Samba(in Fedora), but to completely configure it, you still have to dig in the.conf file. Why would you only have a few configuration options?
When I first took a look at GIMP several years ago, the first thing that turned me off was all the seperate palettes are treated as apps. Saw the same thing in Sodipodi and Inkscape. Seemed that it was the trademark for open-source drawing applications. Didn't like having 5-6 tasks on my taskbar for just one app. On inkscape, if I mistakenly close the last image, the whole app closes down.
All I want are dockable or floating palettes that use a small font size(ie not screen hogs) just like PSP, Photoshop and illustrator use.
And on a second note, I don't wish to see my desktop peep through. A big gray dull background would be less distracting. I've grown way too used to MDI in Windows apps to comfortably use the open source SDI way.
Mod me down for said redunant comments.

Was there a fix on the ECUs to regular mini Coopers? I have a 2003 and the idle warbles under regular speed on occasions if you drive slowly. Ugh.
I upgraded to Fedora Core on one machine, and about a week later, boom, both ethernet cards stopped working.(still trying to investigate).
So I thought I'd piece together a system to try Fedora again. let me tell you, if you have a spare Quad-speed CD-ROM drive laying around, throw it out. I made the mistake of trying to install with that. Every 20 minutes or so, it says xxx package is corrupt. I hit OK, it proceeds.
Oddly enough, I remember specifying NO to installing a news server, yet it installs it anyway, along with 10000 other things I don't ever find myself wanting or needing.
Did I mention it's been installing untattended since Sunday? I occasionally hit OK on the "corrupt package" prompts. The bar graph is about 45% and it says it only has a mere 3000 minutes remaining!
I was just bored. I wondered to see what sort of response I would get. Mind you, this was in the early days of the web. More detail here:

I heard Michael's Computers will now be selling pre-sales of Phantom game consoles. Pre-order yours now!

Yes, I remember that show, and ended caling up WCCO(our affiliate) to ask why it wasn't on. I ended up talking to a security guard who couldn't help.
I would kill for episodes of that show to see again. I would be in early 80s heaven. That's my drug.

So you're saying they have the world's largest Lego set, or would Capsela be a better analogy?
You're right. Mind you, my phone and I assume numeruos others have shortcuts for .com, net. etc.
.5?
I propose the new TLD be easy on the keypads, how about
yahoo.5
sprintpcs.5
Nice and easy to type in, well, at least the TLD part of it.

So who runs phantomgaming? Neo must run since when i clicked on the link I got...
There is no image library

Some guy did that and the police sent back a picture of some handcuffs.
I will anticipate the "Well, why don't you do something! Where's the patch?" posts and answer:
:)
Because maybe the documentation for various graphics libraries is equally bad. Oops!
I know i was pulling my hair out trying to get TCL/TK to work in Python.

Yes, but I don't feel like going to the library every month to see if there's a recall on my car(ie read the magazine for free).
aaaand what if a recall notice is sent out?

yay!
Provided you can get the ROMs, you can play thousands of games, for free.
I like how it's named Firefox, even though there's already a movie and a video game named after it(both being the same).
They must have been thinking in Russian.
