  1. Turn off SSID broadcast on Wi-Fi Alliance To Brand Public Hotspots · · Score: 2

Turning off SSID broadcast is a far better way to keep people off your access point. They cant access what they cant see. And change your SSID from "Linksys" or "Default".

I just dont get the "802.11 is flawed" mantra that I keep hearing over and over again. A little security (WEP plus turning off SSID broadcast) is more than enough for home users. Neither JoeSix pack nor JoeSlashDotter needs military grade encryption. JoeSlashDotter seems to think he does for some reason.

  2. PowerPC is heading in a different direction on Mac vs. PC Digital Photography Comparison · · Score: 2

The R&D of late on this chip have been aimed at highly specialized, mostly embedded, uses like set-top boxes for satellite and cable TV, networking equipment (Cisco and Nortel are big customers), and automotive systems.

Dont forget, IBM is the one that is running the PowerPC show now, not just Motorola.

  4. dont pan TiVo suggestions so quickly. on News on TiVo, "God's Machine" · · Score: 1

I treat TiVo suggestions as another level of recording. I've got so many shows thumbed up and thumbed down at this point that TiVo suggestions works as a "I'll record this for you if I dont have anything better to do". Only on occassion does it pick up a show I've not given a thumb rating to (such a new show) and when it does it's usually VERY accurate.

If you turn off TiVo suggestions and use TiVo simply as a movie storage device (like many people seem to do). You are missing out on one it's most potentially powerful features.

If this goes down, I could see syndicated radio programs (I wont mention any by name because it will just turn into a dumn flame war, it always does) making their way onto DirecTV audio channels. Perhaps even in a way that they are only available to "mobile" subscribers who pay a premium for that service.

  10. Old school librarians just dont get this on Cleveland Public Library Readies E-book Downloads · · Score: 3, Insightful

Not that long ago, I worked for a company that builds library automation software. I built a prototype version of our web based catalog searching application that integrated the contents of Project Gutenberg into the system. It gave the user the ability to view books available in Gutenberg online. Included pagination, bookmarking, and searching.

Showed it to the cheif architect on the project and got rave reviews, showed the marketing department, they loved it. Showed the CEO and he proceeded to chew my ass out for wasting my time and his. I showed it (secretly) to a few customers and half loved it, half hated it. But nobody was willing to try it. That's just dumb.

The moral of the story? While many prefer the feel of a book in hand even the smell, some are willing to try other things.

  11. I've been reading PC Magazine online... on Cleveland Public Library Readies E-book Downloads · · Score: 2

And have been pretty happy with it. It uses the Zinio Reader and is pretty functional. Links are clickable, which is really nice in a magazine of this ilk. It's bookmarkable, searchable and you can write notes on it. The only complaint I've got is that it's too faithful to the paper version. It includes all those annoying subscription and other business reply cards and they have to be turned like any other page.

  15. This brings blogs down the earth on Free Speech And WebLogs · · Score: 3, Insightful

For some reason, Blogs have been treated as something special for a while. Perhaps it's the media attention to the phenomenom.

Blogs aren't anything special. They are just webpages that happen to get updated far more frequently than most. They still contain information, they should be treated like any other webpage.

They aren't diaries. If you keep a text file on your local machine for "blogging" purposes, that's comperable to a diary but the file you make available for all to see isn't.
