  1. Opt-in for all email... on U.S. Spam Law to Take Effect Jan. 1 · · Score: 5, Interesting

The problem is that our current email system is flawed... one of the best solutions (or actually work-arounds) for the current protocol is obvious, and already being used by several major ISPs... opt-in for ALL email. I know a few people who do this (their server rejects email from all senders except those on an approved list) and it works very well for them, but the average Joe wants both convenience AND security for their email, so the hassle of having to "approve" folks is not worth it (apparently it's easier to weed the 30 or 40 legit emails out of the 100's of spam messages)

Face it, email, in its current incarnation, is inherently flawed. Until we actually change the way we implement and use email (perhaps even changing protocols) we will continue to have spam problems. Even Britain's "opt-in" version of anti-spam legislation has done little to curb the problem. The US "opt-out" version is even worse! When a prominent spammer is quoted as saying this 'anti'-spam legislation "makes my day", you KNOW it's a bad law!

I think that the problem needs to be tackled from a technical standpoint, rather than a legal one. If we were able to improve the system, legislation like this wouldn't be necessary!

  2. Bad idea... on Open Source CD Lending For Public Libraries? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Am I the only one that thinks this is a bad idea? All it takes is one script kiddie or spammer getting the idea to check out a CD, take it home, replace it with their own kernel/binaries/whatever, and voila! Ownage. I think an alternative would be to get behind hosting community Open Source events... after all, anyone who is interested in Open Source Software, probably already has the means to access the large, free, online library known as the Internet from the comfort of their own home.

  3. "Wearable?" on Japanese Pocket-Size PC Cube Demonstrated · · Score: 1

  4. Parental role? on Gamers Are Good People, Too · · Score: 5, Insightful

While I think that what Penny Arcade is doing is a wonderful attempt to change the public perception of gamers, I think that the core of the problem is that parents just aren't spending enough time with their kids. When the only interaction and respect that children get is through television, the Internet, and video games, what do you expect?

I'm certainly going to contribute to what the guys are doing with Child's Play, but what I'd really like to see is some sort of media backlash against the parents who are neglecting their duty to our future! Our children should be viewed as a responsibility, not a liability, and we should stop looking for scapegoats and step up to the plate!

  5. Re:Strange... on Dell Moves Call Center Back to US · · Score: 1

I see your point, but I think that Dell should consider that maybe they'd get more market penetration in the home sector if they took better care of their home users. Perhaps the fact that home sales are only 15% of Dell's sales is just a symptom of poor business strategies in this sector?

  6. Excellent Solution on How to Set Up a Gift Website? · · Score: 5, Informative

Moveable Type is an excellent solution. Very user friendly with excellent online documentation. It's also easy to set up! I'd totally recommend it, I too have set it up for a few folks that aren't all that computer savvy, and they've had no problem using it to blog. There's also their pay service Typepad that is even more newbie friendly and requires no setup at all! Either of these solutions will do what you need.

  7. Strange... on Dell Moves Call Center Back to US · · Score: 1

I would think that the home consumers would be the ones most impacted by the offshore callcenters... why move back the corporate calls but not the home users? At my company I deal with Dell all the time and get someone in India for about 60 - 70% of my calls. I usually have no problem getting what I need because I know what I'm talking about. However, the home users I support who on occasion deal with Dell are not as savvy, and they are constantly complaining to me about the horrid support they get from the offshore callcenters... I would think that Dell would be getting far more complaints from their home users than from the corporate folks who know what they're doing! This is a strange strategy, you'd think they'd make more people happy by leaving the business unit overseas and moving the home support back to the States...

  8. Education is key... on EU Hi-Tech Crime Agency Created · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is refreshing, instead of primarily focusing on making restrictive laws and "cracking down on hackers" they're doing what should have been done a long time ago, putting the priority on educating people about actual and potential security threats. I hope it works well, and I hope that the U.S. takes notice of this, since an educated public would be the best defense against viruses and cracking (and would hopefully shut down the media's "chicken little" syndrome when it comes to viruses)

  9. Not the first time... on NERC Releases Interim Report on Aug 14th Blackout · · Score: 1

Are these cascading failures becoming the status-quo for America? Is apathy the new buzzword in corporate circles? How is it possible for this domino effect to occur on something as critical as a power grid?! Don't get me wrong, I think this is a victory for privacy and liberty (albeit a small one), but isn't this setting a precident that's kind of scary? I mean as long as they don't interfere with the service it's ok? Granted, I'm sure that by the time the FBI is taking out warrants to listen in on your conversations you've probably already got worse things to worry about than this, but with everything becoming more interactive, how far away are we from losing what little is left of our privacy? Scary...

I wonder if anyone has taken the time to put this statistic together with the number of jobs that were created during the "dot com boom"... I'd be willing to bet that we're still far ahead of where we were in the early nineties. A lot of those jobs were in the technology and communication manufacturing sector, and manufacturing as a whole has taken a pretty big hit in the recession. The fact that R&D and testing jobs increased leads me to believe that efficiency is also partly to blame...
