and I know I can't use my PDA to get my email (because there is no connection or the cost is too high), I create a dummy email address such as: going2Reno2008@hotmail.com and I forward a copy of all my email to that account for the duration of my trip.
I use a simple password and read what I need to and once I'm done for that session, I delete the emails I don't want anyone to see (empty the trash as well).

you just proved that this type of marketing works - here you are talking about their product and speaking on their behalf whether you like it or not. Some people think that there is no such thing as bad marketing and I'm still not sure if I believe it or not. Regardless, you are spending your time focusing on them when your mind could be focused on another product - Good or bad.
Why is everyone so offended by false advertising anyways? It's been around for years and people aren't serious about getting rid of it. If they were, they would push to have a law passed where the penalties are so severe that it would deter the offenders. You can ignore it and enjoy life or focus your "anger" and spout obscenities. Your choice.../HH
This side thread was amusing... it got pushed up a notch when the "low hanging fruit" expression was misused by the guy who posted the link to cynicism because some people just don't get it. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/low_hanging_fruit
I almost think he did it on purpose... that's what my cover story would be.

When it comes to cell phones and Treos (sorry, I love the touchscreen) - I try to follow these rules. Why you ask? Well, I see other people doing the opposite and it irks me and many other around me. So to counter that, I try to lead by example.
1) If you are on the cell phone, there is no need to raise your voice 2x as loud than your regular face to face conversations.
2) While WAITING in line, it's okay to be on the phone. When you get to the cashier, then it's not okay to be on the phone (Cashiers usually tell me thanks when I hang up as I get to the cash).
3) When you are with family and friends, make them your priority. Nothing tells them they are not important when you take a call or check for email that you didn't need to - that's what voicemail and email is for (unless you are waiting for an important call/email - eg. Job offer or House counter-offer. No, waiting for the Lottery corporation to call is not valid.)
4) No texting/messaging in meetings. We have a rule in our meetings - Anyone caught emailng in a meeting is usually ridiculed (manager included) and they owe $1 to a jar that is used for pizzas and beer.
You are right - people don't need all these products. Heck, they don't need all the features in Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Excel either.
To be honest, I have Office 2003 but I still only use features that were in in Office 2000 (which is the high point of the product line IMHO).
I mean the sticky notes and online collaboration things are a bit out there for a lot of companies. Good ideas but the majority of people don't work like that.
Well I emailed Mr. Guido Sanchidrian and asked him to validate the truth about the article. His email is in the article and I'm sure his mailbox will fill up over the weekend.:)

Why Microsoft has to poke its nose to every business opportunity possible? Isn't there a piece of old wisdom that states that you should only fight the battles you can win? I know this has been said before on earlier MS vs [insert the company/country here] posts, but someone ought to give these guys a reality-bitchslap.
I don't mind if they do this at all - they waste their only precious resource (Cash on hand) by investing in every area. They company has come to rely on it's Windows and Office licensing schemes to keep their revenue going but after the Office 2003 fiasco, the straw on the camel's back is becoming quite heavy indeed.
Methinks they are going at the xbox360 so hard is that they want the LIVE marketplace and then the surfing capability that will follow (and make $$$ on ads and transactions). They aren't panicking yet but they have been outperformed by a lot of smaller companies because they haven't created anything terribly original in a long time.
They are good copying though - I grant them that - they usually suck the first time they do it but the 2nd time is usually pretty good I have to admit (Visio for example - not saying it's great but much better than their first release of it after the buyout)
wow... This has to be the most civilized debate I've seen about the MS vs Sony vs Nintendo in the past 7 months. Thanks for the well thought out arguements and showing that you can be wrong and accept it once in a while. I've been reading posts on www.xbox365.com lately and I fear for the next generation as they have gotten into flame wars that cross the line on racism and go onto arguments such as "You are a horrible father if you can't save money for 7 months and buy your kids a xbox 360".
As for the parent post, I have to agree. When the xbox first came out, Microsoft made a rather candid comment about what their goal was. It wasn't to be on top of the gaming market. It was to be on top (or below) your TV. They wanted to get into your living room and now with their microtransactions, they have done that. Soon the keyboard will emerge and xbox web surfing will be a reality. 4 years to turn a profit is a long time and I have to commend the investors for being so patient with Microsoft because if you were to read that on paper, I would say.. "WTF are they doing?" Why haven't they given up? They can't really - if they do, they will have to come up with a kickass ORIGINAL alternative and when was the last time we have seen something really original from MS? They are the best at copying and improving... I will not deny them that and there is nothing wrong with that. But they are strongly committed into getting into your living room, no matter what the cost.
I have an xbox 1.0 and used to have a PS2 (sold it because I spent too much time on it) and to be honest, I like both. If I had a choice, I will go with Sony mainly because the games IMHO, have been more fun although the graphics have been better on the xbox 1.0. Call me dumb, but graphics alone won't sell me on a game. Give me a story and a fun gaming experience and I will buy games en masse.
Whatever console you end up buying for the nextgen, I hope you enjoy,/D
>>"Telecom executives and analysts, though, aren't so sure it's the right time or place."
Why is it because of the poverty level and they won't have enough clientele? Or because they will lose all the equipment once the next hurricane hits (man vs nature - my bet is on nature but that's another discussion)
Personally, I've heard New Orleans is a big convention city and wouldn't that be a good reason to "hook them up" with this technology.
If the technology is as a good as they are touting, it will draw more people to the area for meetings/conventions would it not?
Just what the site needed for some credibility (NOT). I usually see the spin corners on internet clips when they talk about events that never happened (Like Canada being in the Vietnam war - that was a good one).
Should be interesting to see if they push their political agenda onto the games somehow. I for one will be a lot more skeptical on what is written there and it seems that I'm not alone in this.
Power Pack - bunch of whiny kids who get powers (gravity control, flying, gaseous form and energy absorption/release). I made the mistake of collecting a wad of them and when I reread my collection, I skip over those ones and pretend I never bought them.
The best nemesis for them were the Snarks (aliens from Snarkworld... sigh) - Personally, I thought the "garbage man" storyline was cool because he was some kind of weird creature that messed them up pretty good. Typical "drugs" are bad storyline though.
Shang-Chi is a martial artist - they should have used Iron Fist... Overall though, a poor choice of characters aside from the Avengers and Captain America. Iron Man would have been the best one to choose though...
oh well... Long live Dr. Strange......
So before I sent a kneejerk reaction email based off this topic.. I went to the Ultracade site to see if they had any argument to offer. Sure enough they do. The link to it is here..
David Foley provides a reasoning at least for his actions. While it may not be the correct way of going about it, it is how he plans to fight his "competitors" who use illegal software and piracy methods.
I'm not saying that I'm in total agreement with him but I do see his side of things. Perhaps there is another way to deal with it.....?
I'm sorry.. I have to say something here... If a company the size of GM and Ford have an opportunity to cut their costs at the expense of people's health, they will do it. If they were in it for the benefit of people, they would have invested in emission free vehicles years ago instead of just doing it now after other car manufacturers have gone that route (jump on the bandwagon).
They really only have 1 responsiblity and that's to the shareholder who only cares about the all-mighty dollar. I'm sorry to tell you this, but family and honor are the last thing that North Americans look for. If they were, they would have voted a bit differently I think. (hey it's my opinion, even though thinking like this may brand me as unpatriotic and thus "the enemy")
Money and greed prevail. I live here and it saddens me whenever I travel to third world countries and see how happy people who have very little in terms of material items but family and friends who care and spend time with each other.
It saddens me because we are going down the wrong path and people around the world want to emulate us when they have what we really want in life.

You know.... I did debate on doing the whole midnight madness thing as I thought it was a bit too nerdy. But then I thought.. when am I going to be able to do this again? and you know what, the experience was extremely positive. I met a couple of cool guys, had some good conversations and laughed for about 2 hours as we swapped stories about MMORPGS, penny-arcade, xbox/ps2 trends and how people with kids are able to stand in line for 2 hours for a game. (one guy's wife was sure he was at the bar instead of at EB)
I understand that lining up for a game may not be everyone's cup of tea (my GF didn't quite get why I was going to do it) but people should at least understand that people CAN be passionate about life and enjoy it. Heck, I don't get the whole fascination about reality TV or the American Idol trend but I do know that it does have positive benefits for the people doing it and watching it.
It's okay to think "whoop-de-fucking-doo" but it makes you sound a lot more intelligent and well rounded if you also say "so I looked at the negative side, let me point out some positive points. I may not agree with them but at least I might be able to understand someone else's perspective".
Regardless... I guess we have a difference of opinion on how we look at things so all I can say is "enjoy the game".. and hope you don't fall into my crosshairs.;)

a lousy Halo 2 pin..
I showed up at 11:30am and there were 400-500 people at my EB.. nuts! I had a good time talking to the guys around me for the next 2 hours. M$ representatives were there handing out goodies for all us nerds. The biggest thing they gave out was giant Halo 2 boxes which looked like garbage being given away as gifts. After they had run out of those, they distributed a Halo 2 pin to all us unfortunates...
After trading gaming tags with other guys in line (read: all male crowd), I went home and fired it up. I was hoping my lik-sang adapter mouse/keyboard adapter would be in already but it will be a while until then..
My initial impressions after 2 hours: I like it so far BUT there is nothing really new in the single player game aside from the dual weapon thing. It feels like a bit of an add-on so far but that's not a bad thing because the first one was fun.
Sweet sweet raw materials will aid them on their bid to become a materialistic society like ours. It's too bad that the North American society is what people aspire too. We give up our family and health so we can have material items while other less fortunate nations focus on family (i.e. Laos).
North America has grown fat and drunk in it's luxury and our time will pass onto someone else. No civilization has ever stood the test of time: Britain, Rome, Egypt, Persia.. they were all once the "King of the Hill" and with the recent selection of US presidents, history will repeat itself again because people did not think long term again. My only hope is that the US government doesn't start a nuclear war when they realize they will be #2 in about 20 years from now.
my 2 cents.. a bit pessimitic but after what I saw in the US election, I fear the message that has been sent to the world (i.e. We love our warmongering prez!)
The other thing I would like to add is that CS grads, while highly educated, don't seem to grasp the importance of networking before you graduate. Posted jobs usually only consist of 10-15% of the jobs out there as a in independent developer, I know all too well about this. I've received some sweet contracts because not only did I have the right skillset, I regularly keep in touch with all my contacts.
The person who suggested that they attend LUG is good because that's how you start networking.
Best of luck to all the C.S. grads out there as well as I know it's a competitive market at the moment. Just remember that you need to differentiate yourself and being socially connected with the community in your area is a good way to do it.
Aside from being a new revenue stream in their ever shrinking market expansion (had to think about that one), perhaps there are some fundamental issues with the current versions of the OS that cannot be "patched".
Maybe some of the changes that they need to make would piss off their customers big time (changing EULA, changes to API which would break existing code, etc..) that it would be easier just to protect the OS against the viruses so the fundamentals aren't changed.
I'm a love'em/hate'em type of guy when it comes to MS so while I don't entirely trust them, I think that by building a virus scanner, they are in fact admitting that they can't build a bulletproof OS.
I usually reinstall every 6 months but that's because I like to download a lot of new apps and try them out. Dlls left behind from uninstallers, extra fonts and spyware take away from the life of my Windows installation.
This is what I put in (after I do the million window updates for W2K and add my scanner/camera software and media apps (Quicktime, winamp 5, shockwave))
1. McAffee antivirus + updates 2. Office 2003 + updates 3. BitTorrent 4. Ultra Edit 10.10c 5. Xfire (to keep track of what and where my buddies are playing online) 6. ACDSee 6 7. Station Ripper 8. Nero 6.x.x.x 9. Ghost (and then make an image of that puppy) 10. Games of the day (Far Cry, Painkiller, COH at the moment)
Interesting to see what other people are using.. think I'll be doing some digging again..:) Maybe time for a new base ghost image too!
I think what bothers people about this is that the waitress actually takes the time to remember what you like/dislike which people like because it makes you feel like someone cares.
It would sound pretty fake (and make me less likely to shop there again) if I walked into the a franchise store in a city where I've never been and the salesperson would come over and talk to me as if we are old friends.
Will this lead to people who are targeted as big spenders to get better service because of their past spending sprees? who knows...
one thing is for sure though, it's coming to stores near you...

For the moron who posted the whiny b*tch comment, there used to be a t-shirt that says "My parents went on vacation and all they brought back was this t-shirt". Since then, the expression has changed and variations have emerged. I should have put a disclaimer on my email for the less educated (or at least a smiley). My apologies, I thought that intelligent people posted on slashdot. cya anon

(one guy's wife was sure he was at the bar instead of at EB)
;)
I guess we have a difference of opinion on how we look at things so all I can say is "enjoy the game".. and hope you don't fall into my crosshairs.

a lousy Halo 2 pin..
So enjoy it when you can folks...
Agree with you on that 100%.

China is indeed on the move as you can see with one of their major comapanie's bid for Noranda.

Well said.. I agree with you 100%.
Take care,
Darcy
Aside from being a new revenue stream in their ever shrinking market expansion (had to think about that one), perhaps there are some fundamental issues with the current versions of the OS that cannot be "patched".
Maybe some of the changes that they need to make would piss off their customers big time (changing EULA, changes to API which would break existing code, etc..) that it would be easier just to protect the OS against the viruses so the fundamentals aren't changed.
I'm a love'em/hate'em type of guy when it comes to MS so while I don't entirely trust them, I think that by building a virus scanner, they are in fact admitting that they can't build a bulletproof OS.
my 2 cents,
Darcy
I usually reinstall every 6 months but that's because I like to download a lot of new apps and try them out. Dlls left behind from uninstallers, extra fonts and spyware take away from the life of my Windows installation.
:) Maybe time for a new base ghost image too!
This is what I put in (after I do the million window updates for W2K and add my scanner/camera software and media apps (Quicktime, winamp 5, shockwave))
1. McAffee antivirus + updates
2. Office 2003 + updates
3. BitTorrent
4. Ultra Edit 10.10c
5. Xfire (to keep track of what and where my buddies are playing online)
6. ACDSee 6
7. Station Ripper
8. Nero 6.x.x.x
9. Ghost (and then make an image of that puppy)
10. Games of the day (Far Cry, Painkiller, COH at the moment)
Interesting to see what other people are using.. think I'll be doing some digging again..
True about the waitress comment GigsVT.
