I hear ya on the vote libertarian comment. During this past years election, I mentioned to a few people that I was thinking of voting for a 3-rd party (green or libertarian). All they said was - "you're just going to throw your vote away."
Well, if I don't like the policies that the two dominent-party candidates have, and I choose to vote for them, technically, aren't I throwing my vote away to something I don't believe in?
People need to wake up and smell the revolution brewing in the headquarters of the Libertarian party, the ACLU, and any organization who's goal is to preserve American's rights given to us by our Founding Fathers.
It would be kinda pathetic to see MS stoop as low as to discounting their product just to sell it. Hasn't it always been thought that one must use the best tool for the job?
If MS spent more time trying to make their operating system and other products the best "tool" in the world, then OSS would have no chance.
Than again, it just looks like the nations are playing Microsoft just to save a few bucks.
I think Microsoft will start complaining about how you can't resell their licenses. - I know I know, you ain't reselling it, you're giving it away, but you know MS is vicious enough to accuse you of violating the EULA.
Thats cool and all that nVidia is releasing OpenGL/3D accelerated drivers for our open source operating systems. I am grateful for their hardwork they put in to making these drivers for Linux, *BSD etc.
But when is ATI gonna get off it's lazy ass and release at least some alpha drivers for their Radeon or Rage cards for these operating systems?
I know there are projects like Gatos that make ATI drivers for Linux, but I'm sure ATI can make something better considering the fact that they have the specs for their cards.
I know many will probably say just buy nVidia cards, but all I own are Radeons (in my workstation) and a Rage Mobility card (in my laptop). It would be nice for ATI to step up to the plate and one-up nVidia though.
Now, is there a 10 Things IE Can Do That Mozilla Can Not such as run ActiveX properly if at all so one can go to most msn.com sponsored sites such as MSN Chat? Or how about properly running the Java plugin so Yahoo! Chat doesn't crash after a few minutes. I'm not making this up. This happens everytime.
Believe me, like the rest of you, I love Mozilla, and I live by the tabbed browsing. But unfortunetly, there are a lot of things I do on the Internet that still force me to crawl back to IE.
... although it wont officially be supported until Microsoft's Longhorn OS, Serial ATA devices will work with all versions of Windows.
And this made me wonder... how long will it take until Linux (and the *BSDs) support this new standard? Will it happen after Longhorn's release? Or has it already been done?
Is it just me or is the kde.org server extremely slow? Is this related to that downtime I heard about a few days ago?
Anyway, I do have to admit, KDE is one of the more attractive desktop environments - even better than WinXP (with its ugly green/blue combo - it don't work). I would use KDE as my main desktop environment, cause my favorite distro - Mandrake installs the d.e. by default. But I've never decided to use KDE (nor GNOME) because the two are extremely fat and slow on low-end systems. Even on my high end systems, I'd rather give up looks for power and speed.
I know MS is losing money on the X-Box, but then again, their $40 billion rainy day fund (which is 10 times that of many US states' rainy day funds), is very useful to write off any losses.
But then again, maybe the X-box is just MS's beta period for their next big project - complete total control of your living room.
Maybe.
I agree with Moonshadow 100%. I think it was an heartfelt gesture by the Camelot community. Yea, it may have been a little virtual, but the community, real live human beings, came together, putting distance and gaming behind them, to honor this man.
I understand the above post's fact that it would be very difficult to create another set of libraries along with a desktop environment.
Yet the parent asks why the 2 major desktop environments look like Windows.
So why couldn't one (or a group of developers) combine both of these statements and create a window manager with a "modern and cool, like in the movies" interface that is compatable with either the GTK or QT libraries or both, (plus or minus patches for this window manager to make it compatable with the GTK or QT libraries)?
Though I am not a heavy developer, the concept of this wouldn't be difficult. It would be like rebuilding fluxbox to make it run KDE apps 100% natively instead of using a "transparency layer (?)" just so you can use KDE apps in fluxbox (or WindowMaker or IceWM etc).
Ever since I've received my first Pentium class computer back in 1995, I have used Microsoft products for office productivity. First it started out with Works - which imho was a total piece of crap. The formatting sucked, it crashed constantly on my first Gateway, and most of the time I just used Notepad. Then after receiving a used copy of MS Office '97 I was finally happy with my office productivity lifestyle. But then I looked into StarOffice 5.2 - I hated the desktop mangling whatcha-ma-call-it that changed your desktop around in Windows. Then I moved to OpenOffice which was nearly impossible to install properly on Windows up until version 1.0 (finally got OO to work on Win2k). I wasn't happy with OO's stability and reliability on Win2k. Then I bought a Sony Vaio FX-A series laptop that came bundled with WordPerfect, and I was impressed. Yea, it didn't handle DOC files, but that wasn't a concern. But what WP did was it provided me with a very thourough office suite without getting in my way with talking paper clips, grammer checker (read: MS Office 2000 >) and it just did what I needed it to do. So I say cheers! to HP for trying something new and I say kudos to Corel for such a nice Office productivity suite!
So it is true, Warcraft III is supposed to be released on July 3rd. But oddly enough, my friend already has a fully working, pirated copy of WC III. Maybe he got it from the same people that gave him LoTR and Star Wars EP II on DVD. I had it on my laptop till I had to do a sys recovery - go figure...
I don't believe Slashdot is a BLOG. I would call it a portal myself. Then again, I don't see the academic value of teaching blogging. For the most part it is just a personal journal or diary. Then u have those "script kiddie" sites with links, and mindless posts about nothing. Oh well.
I want me one of them LinuxDA's I read about the other day. You can buy em for $100 at http://www.linuxda.com . They are made with the same hardware as the Palm IIIxe but are $130 cheaper than any other place I've seen. And it runs linux;-)
Once again, big brother is infringing on American's most basic right - freedom of speech
and freedom of expression. Now unless this person is known to maliciously "hack" computers, thats one thing. But if a security-freak white hat uncovers a hole in software and shares it through out the good hacker society, technically, he's breaking the law. What kind of crap is that?
I guess so. Instead of fragging themselves in Quake, they ended up fragging a few of the patients to get their fix.
I don't know about you cluster folks, but these new Beowulf clasters I heard about sound pretty cool.
A Beowulf cluster of those Beowulf clasters would be sweet!

Well, you think there would be enough Slashdot members where we can band together, and /. all of the mirror servers with our *NIX boxen, right?
And this made me wonder... how long will it take until Linux (and the *BSDs) support this new standard? Will it happen after Longhorn's release? Or has it already been done?
Well, its a good thing they chose Linux instead of Windows.
Now they won't have to worry about the system crashing before the car

I noticed the PDF explaining how you can soak your hand and dip it into molten lead for a split moment, and you won't suffer any injury.
Would this be possible with a damp finger and standard french fry grease heated to 350 F?

Kudos to the members of Dark Age of Camelot.

Hey, who said we need to use proper "grammer" on Slashdot? ;)

The sad thing about this humorist post is that these some of these "lawsuits" could actually happen the way the RIAA is heading... tsk tsk...
