  1. Re:I remember that... on Masters of Doom · · Score: 2, Interesting

I still have original copies of Doom, Wolf3D, and a handful of Commander Keen, 'cept I always have troubling running the games on my Win2k and WinXP computers. Sometimes the games won't run period, or there will be missing sound (for example).

My friend's got it worse on Win98 - He can play the games for a good 1/2 before he bluescreens.

I know this may be off-topic to the story, but does anyone have quick tips on how to play these DOS-age games on modern day OS's and hardware?

Or better yet ... Buy a CD from an indie band covered under an Indie label - Actually, for how much indie bands charge for their CD's, you could probably get 2 of 'em for $13. If you need a head start on where to look, I suggest All Or Nothing Records. You can buy one of their band's CD's for $8 off the online store.

Indie bands need the support, plus, they appreciate their fans' support. Win-Win situation.

  10. Re:dumping? on Will Microsoft Subsidize WinXP For Lindows Buyers? · · Score: 1

Yea, it also costs lest than $1 or so to reproduce an audio CD. But when bands take the costs into consideration - they are considering _a lot_ of things - Recording, Engineering, Mastering, Mixing, Studio Time, CD Sleeve Printing, anything you can think of - on top of the actual cost of pressing the CD.

So yea, it might cost less than $50 to reproduce a WinXP CD - but what about developer's wages, R&D, debugging, what have you?

Good choice I have made, it seems.

  12. Actually ... (IT Managers) on Cisco to Ship Wi-Fi Phone in June · · Score: 2, Insightful

Yea, the wifi phone might not be able to replace mobile phones themselves. And the article does mention using them in the enterprise. Does anyone else think the phones can be a great way for IT Managers to keep in touch with home base? Most IT people I know carry pagers, so if they are around the office, the boss pages them to send 'em over to a job, but they first must call the boss up on an office phone to get the details.

By carrying this phone around, the IT person could be easily contacted and sent where needed instantly. Good idea? No?

  13. Lowell MI on Building a Town-Wide LAN? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I live up in west Michigan nearby a town called Lowell. Now, around where I live, we have Comcast Cable for Internet and TV, and Charter for cable 'net, AT&T, MCI, Ameritech, what have you for phone companies. My household pays roughly $160 each month to these companies for cable internet, local and long distance phone, and digital cable service. Obvisouly, these are privately owned corps.

Now, drive 10 miles SE, to Lowell, MI, where the major utilities are owned by the city. They offer local phone, broadband internet, digital cable, the utilities, etc, and it's cheap. Running about $60 average for all the services. There isn't no private corporation involved. All of the infastructure was built, and is owned by the city.

So, would I rather pay $60 than $160. Yes, especially if it ain't to a large corporation out for better interests than the consumer. Plus, as a citizen of that city, in a way, you control and have a voice in what goes on. Thats why supporting your local infastructure could be important and better off in the long run for your community.

Featuring the sexy Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremer, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly McDonald. Trainspotting is a fairly accurate movie (and book) about a group of junkies, "rude boys" and nutters who spend their lives in Scotland doing drugs, getting drunk, etc. Meanwhile, Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) realizes he's tired with is life of heroin, drinking, stealing, and wants to change it. The movie is very well acted, very funny, and from what I heard fairly accurate since it was written by a Scotsman.

So that's my forgotten movie - Trainspotting

  17. PHP Web-apps on Do You Write Backdoors? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I work for a small startup that specializes in custom web-applications for indy record labels and small-time bands and clubs. Our main product is a all-in-one web-app that will allow the customer to manage their shows, news, mailing list and numurous other things.

We offer several levels of this product, one being shared (get 1 account on our servers) which we control, standalone, and custom standalone (the standalones go on their own servers.) The latter two are designed to have one back-door login account for myself and the other programmer to go in there and edit their settings or database if the customer breaks something.

So there is my 2 cents. Yes, I put small backdoors in my company's web-apps per boss's request.

  18. Xandros Linux on Rise of the 'Consumer' Linux Distribution · · Score: 1

I have to admit, while I know my way around linux using distros such as Red Hat, Mandrake, and Debian, for my main desktop, I chose a simple, "it-just-works" distro, Xandros Linux. While its front-end isn't what most linux geeks would like to call complex, its design, and construction makes it that much more worthwhile. Along with the powerful underside of Debian, Xandros has made my life easier by just working.

When I ran Mandrake 8.2 for a while, I spent nearly a week trying to get my D-Link WiFi card to work. I managed to snag a copy of Xandros 1.0 after hearing such great things, and lo and behold, my card was detected and installed within 5 seconds of putting it in the PCMCIA slot. All I had to do was specify the SSID, and a few other things. No editing text files at all.

So, while I use Red Hat on my servers, and I am a complete command-line junkie, all I wanted out of my distro was that it just works. I know a lot of people and friends who are thinking of giving LInux a chance, but like myself, they don't want to sift through text files, or spend an hour trying to install an rpm or compile source,They just want to turn their computer on and it works - and especially doesn't crash.

Distros like Xandros, Lycoris, and Lindows should be applauded for their services to the Linux community by promoting ease-of-use alongside power and stability.

I don't know about Windows or MacOS, but I don't believe Linux or Open/Free/NetBSD use any copywritten UNIX IP code in their kernels. Do they?

My question is: How did this happen? I know a lot of open source-based companies either go out of business or are in the red for a while. One exception is Red Hat who seems to be doing very well, and IIRC have been in or near the black for some time.

But for future reference for all open source advocates and future linux business people, I am curious to know the hows? the whys? and the what happeneds? that put Mandrake in this position.

In the end though, MandrakeSoft has been a wonderful company to the open source community. I have used their distro several times since v7.2 and I've been happy with it most of the time. I wish MandrakeSoft the best of luck.
