It looks great on an HDTV set iff the user configures the set to properly display the old-skool NTSC content! I'm amazed at how often people simply don't notice that the image is stretched in the horizontal. It makes heads look squished. It's readily apparent when you're in a bar and they're showing a game on the big widescreen next to smaller 4:3-format monitors.

It's really funny when they show letterboxed NTSC on the widescreen display. Whatta bunch of maroooooons ...

    Let's be pedantic here.

You basically get three major types of caps on motherboards, each of which have different properties:

Ceramics. Small and fast. Typically used for decoupling (small charge storage).

Also used in filtering applications ...

Electrolytic: Larger and slower. They are slower because they are highly inductive. They don't like working at very high frequencies which can make them fail. I suppose you mean Aluminum Electrolytic. The failure modes are not high frequency, but mainly heat (either because of the environment or because its ESR is relatively high, which means it's self heating). They also don't like reverse biases, the results of which can be very exciting. They're not "slower" because they're "inductive," they're "slower" because their values are typically much larger than ceramic types.

Tantalum: Medium/large and fast. They are less inductive than electrolytics. They can dump current far faster than electolytic which can cause undesirable current rushes.

Tantalums are also electrolytics. The electrolyte allows for larger capacitance in a given area. You REALLY don't want them to be reverse biased, and they have a bad tendency to explode if inrush current is too high. You don't want to use a tantalum as a DC block in audio circuits.

You also forgot some other capacitor types: polystyrene, mica, etc. These guys tend to be physically larger than a ceramic for a given capacitance, but they're a lot more stable. (And more expensive.) You'll find them in filter and integrator circuits, in high-frequency stuff, anywhere where stability is required.

  9. Re:Why no Diesels in North America? on Hybrids Beware? EPA Revises Mileage Standards · · Score: 1

Why are diesel cars unavailable in the USA/Canada? Diesels in autos were banned in California (and I believe New York, as well) due to emissions problems, even though clean-burning diesel technology has existed for ages. Since California represents a huge market, and since it doesn't make much sense for the automakers to have separate models for the California market, diesel autos are relatively rare. Of course, rather than banning diesels, CA could have required the automakers to use the clean-burning technology despite the resistance. Anyways, look how long it took to Get The Lead Out of gasoline (another California initiative): the automakers and Big Oil probably didn't want to deal with TWO major California regulatory issues, so they chose the easiest (unleaded gas).

One of my compact cars is rated at 140HP. My mini van that weighs at least 1500lbs more is rated at 165HP. My van will blow that car off of the road even while pulling a 1000lb trailer. The peak HP are almost meaningless. Torque is more important for determining real world output and neither alone are as informative as looking at a dyno run sheet would be. Hell, I guess you could skip the dyno chart and include a 60ft, 1/8 mile and 1/4 time with the trap speed.
