    The problem is, that although your mini is awesome and adequate for your needs, American soccer mom from suburbia hell drives a 4 tonne SUV with bumpers 4 feet off the ground... so when she runs the red light because little johnny is late for practice and hits your car, you won't survive.

    In today's world, no matter how small the car you want to make, you have to take into account the huge vehicles you share the road with.

    And as a side note, I'm a cyclist (as in bicycle), and there is nothing that makes you feel safer than a 5 foot person driving a near transport truck size SUV down the road past you when you're on a bike... Some of these damned trucks/SUVs should require a special class of license to drive... What is it with America's love afair with huge gas guzzling cars/trucks?

    What we are doing is reducing the complexity.

    And what the rest of the industry is doing, is fixing the problem instead. I just love marketing BS... Consumer says fix it, company says we've reduced the complexity, customer still sitting waiting for fix.

    It's not free... I pay $44.95 a month to Rogers for my highspeed internet access in Canada, and I get my bandwidth reduced, and even DNS resolution problems while trying to download stuff off bittorrent... Customer support claims they don't know what I'm talking about... but everything works perfectly fine until I use bittorrent to transfer a large amount of data (>1GB) and then all of a sudden, the DNS servers stop resolving names properly... it takes 4 or 5 attempts for them to return anything... After a few hours of not using bittorrent all returns to normal...

    So as a Canadian, I'm starting to worry when my ISP is going to decide to accidentally stop resolving known bittorrent tracker sites' DNS entries...

    I must say, I use the shopping cart at thinkgeek to make it from paycheck to paycheck... I don't have enough money to buy anything, but I pile all sorts of stuff in my shopping cart... then come payday, I purchase everything that I've accumulated over the month, then am flat broke again until next payday... but I made sure to get everything I wanted... now if only they sold food...

    That wasted R&D, as you put it, might seem like a waste now, but who knows, they may have come up with something unusable currently, but invaluable in the future... R&D doesn't have to apply to the exact product you are currently working on... I'm reaping the benefits of R&D done for a product not even related to what I'm currently working on... It's not wasted... AND it remains the property of the respective company. Plus it's a tax writeoff (at least in Canada).

    LOL... Oh look, you posted a complaint about the moderation of comments, that has NOTHING to do with the article, and you got rated +5... Who cares? It's a totally flawed rating system... live with it...

    If you read slashdot, you should know that interesting and insightful comments are usually sitting at -1 or +1, not +5... Not to mention the fact that meta-moderators will usually correct out the improperly moderated posts...

    And I still stand by my root post... The web is based on trust, and the whole thing is gonna collapse at some point, and I am truely amazed it hasn't collapsed yet.

    And next time, if you don't think my post is insightful or interesting, or whatever the hell it gets modded to, simply post your own views, don't bitch... add something useful to the conversation, especially if you are complaining that I did not.

    The whole thing about the web is it's based on trust... it's amazing it works as well as it does... I can see providors not obeying TTL simply to keep their DNS servers from being stuffed (or whatever the word du jour is)... It's all about trust, and the lack of it nowadays on the web... get used to this sorta thing happening more and more.

    I still haven't found anything that truely taxes my existing 3.2ghz P4. Games push the video card, not the CPU... I'm sure servers could benefit, but I don't see a major improvement in end user experience for these gaming systems.

    Usually they build enormous hype by not showing it off to the consumer but rather showing it to select few reviewers, who then spill all sorts of happy, wonderful, everything is awesome, best thing since sliced bread reviews... everyone gets all hyped up, and by the time end consumers get to see the product for what it is, full of issues, the hype is so big that no one cares, and they sell millions...

    Why switch the perfect marketing model?

    What's your point? I don't like Dell laptops... IBM sold their laptop division to some no-name, can't be yet trusted for quality company over seas... what's that leave us? Yes, Powerbooks... they're great hardware... I'm not a Mac lover... but I have had to work on PPC hardware, and I do like the power it has over similiar x86 based laptops... and OSX is a nice unix environment with a pretty shell... now if the powerbooks still had OS9 on them, there would be no way I would buy one...

    That's the seller, an OS that's stable and powerful, on hardware that's powerful... Less to do with it being Apple, more to do with being better than Dell and HP and the rest of the crap out there.

    I like how they handled that... no horrible punishments, no wagging their finger at the community... just fix the hole, force the update (for obvious legal reasons), and carry on loving your customers... I like...

    Okay... think about this... millions of cars use the roads in a major city... can the roads handle millions of cars on it all at the exact same time? Hell no...

    Millions of users doesn't mean millions of users at the exact same time... It's highly unlikely that everyone will want to access their personal data at the exact same time from this site... that's probably built into the design.

    I think there are certain things that should be warning signs... I like Star Trek, if I sign up to be in the navy and say that, they might laugh... if I show up at the navy dressed in full costume, they have something to worry about, and probably shouldn't give me any position with any access (read security clearence) as I'm probably not the most mentally stable person... don't you think that's pruedent?

    that's great... why do I care? Seriously, I sometimes write code for windows apps, while running FreeBSD... who cares... sometimes you just happen to be in a different environment... it doesn't mean you've abandoned the other one.
