    We're moving interstate 93 underground by the financial district and north end (and fleet center) as well as creating some tunnels (now open) to connect the interstates together and provide better access to the airport.

    OK, this is more of a Windows feature, but if I could only find a backup utility (and I'd pay money - are you listening Veritas) that supported open files, I could replace my Windows files server with Linux running Samba...

    That's my wish anyway...

    Why would this be a Linux feature as opposed to pure app? I believe the filesystem needs a patch/filter/stacked driver and it'd be great if it were native...

    Anyway... someone could make my day and my $$$ if they solved this one...

    Linux tends to make huge leaps and bounds in a short time while Sun usually just tweaks a few interest points at a time.

    This might be because Solaris is ahead of Linux in a lot of places (scalability and storage management are two areas that come to mind right away).

    There are diminishing returns as an OS matures -- refinement becomes the goal rather than feature addition.

    Watch MacOS X to see the same phenomenon in action...

    Unfortunately, however, the notebook doesn't include DVI-out support, so my monitor [sgi.com] would fall back to VGA mode if I tried to use the notebook with it.

    No loss!

    I have one of those too -- works just as well on VGA as the DVI port (or DVI works just as "badly" as the VGA - take your pick).

    That particular issue shouldn't be a show stopper for you...

    But I'll be a lot of people wouldn't like the cost.

    People here often slag Sun and Apple (maybe a little more deservedly for Apple) for example for being too expensive and brag about the white box held together with rubberbands and glue because a good case was too expensive.

    Quality costs or else Lexuses (Lexi?) would cost the same as Pontiacs...
