When I read the headline I saw 'SG1' as in Stargate SG1 and was thinking 'Yeah.. too many re-runs, Not the same anymore'.. then read through the comments and realized you were talking about the SGI workstations! DOH!
I've learned my lesson on cheap hardware. It's not as cheap as it seems at Fry's.
I definately agree about cheap hardware at Frys! I helped a friend build his first computer a couple of years ago. First we went cheap, BIG MISTAKE! We ended up getting more expensive hardware after 4 return trips. Funny thing was that each time other people were in line with the same item returning it (grin).
Buying any hardware at Fry's can be an experience; finding non 'stickered' hardware (not been returned) is your best bet. Now I go online to check out hardware before I buy it, and hang out in the return area for awhile to see if people are bringing them back.
You never know though. I took a chance last year on the day after thanksgiving and bought one of their $100 computer specials. Amazingly it's still running! It's only 700Mhz or something like that and has a soldered VIA cpu, but it's been a great development server so far.
Granted, I didn't go buy another one to see if my P4 failure was a fluke, I popped it in a friends board.. it was dead. The cpu fan was burned out, I made the connection.
I bought an Athlon board and CPU to replace it. From what you say about Tom's Hardware article I hope the fan doesnt go out:)
Do you happen to have a link to that article? It sounds like an interesting read.
AMD makes good products. I've NEVER been burned when buying AMD processors. I've been buying them since the K6 chips.
I once had a machine that would periodically crash (K6/2). I thought it was just windows, since windows crashed a fair amount anyway. One day on a whim I opened up the case and discovered the CPU fan was burned out. I'd been running it that way for over a year. I put a new fan in it and all was well.
I had a P4 cpu fan go bad.. it was toast by the time I knew about it. I haven't tried that trick with newer AMD chips, but that experience was enough for me to stick with them since. Plus they're still usually cheaper.
If your mother had never seen m$ windows then what would she expect?
Just because your mom has used windows doesn't mean linux should look exactly like windows to be easy to use. If the computer came pre-installed with linux, they would learn it just like they did with windows. My wife who had no experience with either had no trouble figuring out where the games were or how to send email.
My mother is completely baffled by windows. She calls me with the MOST retarded questions on earth, and it takes me a few minutes to figure out just what she is talking about. She has the complete set of 'video professor' cd's and still doesn't get it.
Windows is not the end all of 'easy' you make it sound. It's easy to me, because I've been using it since v3.0. It's only easier if you already have experience with it.
A live CD, a book, and a DVD is more than most windows users get.
Im sure having some gadget sticking in your mouth and a huge helmet on your head would make you a hit with the ladies too!
Seriously though.. I could see applications for this. Picture this: Fighter helmet with mouth piece that sits against the pilots tongue. When the computer detects a threat it can stimulate the pilots tongue in relation to the direction and distance of the target. After a little training this sort of thing would really increase reaction time. Though it would make a conversation with the tower a bit tough:)
I have an interesting idea: Pass new legislation that makes it ILLEGAL for an individual or small business with less than 1000 employees to obtain a patent. [Sarcasm] Great Idea! Lets just kill the small business innovation protection. Lord knows that you must have 1000 employees to be creative these days. Gone are the days where a single individual can come up with new ideas that reshape the world.
With your idea in place:
Henry Ford would have needed at least 1000 employees before he could create the assembly line (and lay off at least 500 of them)!
Thomas Alva Edison would have to have 1000 employees before he could patent the light bulb!
Orville and Wilbur Wright would have to have 1000 employees before patenting the "Heavier than air flying Machine"!
Just think of a world where only rich companies could patent things.. Simply Heaven!
This will balance out the patent system and make the system fair for all involved. Clearly, such a patent system will benefit the consumer. Yes! You know when you have 1000 employees the world is so unfair. Finally a fair system for companies with 1000 employees or more! [/Sarcasm]
While I think it is great that open source projects are getting a nice infusion of cash, I just can't help remembering what happened between 1997 and 2000.
The problem with the dot-com boom was venture capitalists pushed companies to grow too quickly and burn out. I saw a lot of stupid ideas get millions of dollars only to die a horrible death.
I've wanted a linux pda for years.. I just cant afford to pay cheap computer prices for a PDA. Problem is that the companies that make them sell them for too much! If they made them more affordable it wouldnt be 0.09%.
I have an old palm III.. can't justify spending over $300 on a new pda.
Hey Zaurus and other linux pda makers.. Make them more affordable and we'll buy them!
These stores are retarded.. how long will it take that woman to tell 10 of her friends.. and so on. Pretty soon, none of them like to shop there.
This article alone is likely enough to persuade women all over the place to NOT shop there. Often clothing looks great in the store, but when you get it home you realize that it has issues. They'd be far more effective to reward customers that don't return things with coupons/etc than to punish people that do.
There are people in Florida that can't handle drawing a straight line or punching a hole in a piece of paper. Unless you use something they can't forget at home or lose (like a finger print ), someone will scream that they were disenfranchised.
You guys need to accept it; Bush won, fair and square. Kerry lost because of his actions, the actions of the democratic party, and his wife.
We can fight about this for the next 4 years, or we can go kick some terrorist ass. I'd rather do the latter.
I've talked to a lot of democrats that voted the party line EXCEPT they voted for Bush. I was shocked when I found out that they nominated the guy that bashed our troops on the floor of congress in the 70's. At least Howard Dean was interesting and had a position.
Kerry lost because he ran a negative campaign and said nothing positive about what he would do differently. Instead he'd name a topic and then launch into a rant against Bush. That and he contradicted himself too much. Had he instead ran a positive campaign and had a firm position on something he probably would have won. The people I heard supporting him were more anti-Bush than they were pro-Kerry.
The thing with Christopher Reve's wife was blatant exploitation. Bush is the first president to fund stem cell research in any form. Kerry went on a rant as if Bush was anti stem cell research and that somehow if he were president he could 'do something about it'.
The media playing us for fools over the 'missing weapons' that were gone before we even got there wasn't helpful either. They may have fooled a few people, but I doubt many.
Tereza Hienz Kerry didn't do much to help him either. The comment on Sept. 18 likely turned a lot of voters against Kerry, where she told volunteers sending supplies to Caribbean hurricane victims that "Clothing is wonderful, but let them go naked for a while, at least the kids." I don't know about you I don't want someone that insensitive as first lady.
I hope this is a lesson to the democratic party. They did the same thing last time and lost. Next time, go positive and tell us how you're going to make things better. BTW Democratic Party: If you want to increase my taxes to support a bunch of social programs you will lose my vote. Cut the fat and then talk.
So to recap: Kerry lost because he's anti military in a time of war, people haven't forgotten what he did in the 70's (there are still plenty of people that feel the same way about Jane Fonda), he ran a negative campaign with little substance about what HE would do, his wife did nothing but hurt him with her foul mouth, and he couldn't define his position other than "I'll do whatever you want to hear".
Right, but it requires a 5 to 1 ratio of Kerry voters to Bush voters. How about only 2 to 1? That is to say, if your argument applied, Kerry would have won anyway.
HUH? My point was that peer pressure can sway what people say in exit polls. Also that the poll person's agenda can sway the exit poll too.
CNN by it's actions convinced me early on that they were pro Kerry by how long it would take them to put up Bush states and how quickly they'd put up Kerry states.
Polls mean nothing to me. They're used mostly to sway how people think or vote. Nice try CNN, no dice!
I keep hearing Kerry voters say that 'their vote didn't count'.. Sure it did. Just because you didn't win doesn't mean that the process is flawed.
I also noticed that CNN was the LAST news organization to figure out that Bush won Ohio. Other sites gave Ohio to Bush early in the day. Foxnews.com gave it to him early in the morning on election night; they're more conservative so I expected that. Yahoo.com gave it to him mid morning the next day. Even the pro-democrat cbs.com and msnbc.com gave Ohio to Bush by noon. It was after Kerry had conceded before CNN finally joined everyone else. That alone was enough for me to conclude that CNN had an agenda.
A wrinkle is the fact that all the early exit polls pointed to a Kerry victory, the republicans were depressed, the democrats estatic. Then when the real results started coming in the situation was reversed. Especially when you have the president of Diebold a very strong Repubican.
Exit Polls? I voted, I did not see nor know anyone that saw anyone being exit polled. My problem with polls in general is that you can push them toward your desired outcome by asking the question a certain way. I've never been polled for anything other than consumer product and radio station preferences. I look at ALL poll results suspiciously.
If the 5 people in front of you said Kerry, a lot of people would say Kerry even if they voted for Bush to keep from being harrassed about it.
Give it up. Bush won fair and square. Time to move on.
and noone moves to the centre in the US we spell it 'center'
While it is amusing that the redskins win/losses have mirrored the presidential election, I think this year will prove it for what it is... BS.
Much like the 'curse' was lifted from the RedSox, this year the redskins presidential election parallel will be broken.
So what will be the next Redskin presidential parallel... The Redskins will predict the presidential election except if the redsox win?
Due to the rampant voter fraud (Disenfranchised? Try stupid) in 2000 in Florida and other states many people such as myself decided to vote for the first time to ensure our interests were represented and not swamped by fraudulent votes. There were enough first time American voters this time to trump all the voter bussing, non citizen voting, and double voting.
On the other hand, I considered that Bush losing was in effect letting Bush off easy. What he deserves is to be arrested for his criminal acts as president.
Time to take your medication... or lay off the weed a bit:)
Try asterisk@home (asteriskathome.sourceforge.net)and a $6 digium fxo card. :)
Add voip and you get almost free long distance
Ditto on reliablity.. Down now for day two..
Im sure many people tuned out because of all the damn reruns!
It will almost be sad to see you go...
Back to watching the SciFi Channel, reruns of Stargate are on.
When I read the headline I saw 'SG1' as in Stargate SG1 and was thinking 'Yeah.. too many re-runs, Not the same anymore'.. then read through the comments and realized you were talking about the SGI workstations! DOH!
I think 'innovate or die' sums it up.
Wow, Thats an awesome article!
:)
I especially loved how the Athlon chip melted withing a second when the heat sink was removed.
Looks like AMD chips don't hold up to the heat like they used to
My cpu/fan failure must have not been from heat.
