  1. In other news on L.A. County Bans Use Of "Master/Slave" Term · · Score: 1
This is another big "hot topic" in L.A. county right now. Try not to pay too much attention to this stuff or you will go surely go insane.

'In late January, this year, Sheriff Lee Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff called a talk show in Los Angeles. The hosts of the show had "dared" public officials to call the show and defend their support for higher vehicle taxes. The pair questioned rhetorically whether officials would "have the gonads" to defend their positions on the air. Sheriff Baca called, and after a brief debate with John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou of the popular "John and Ken Show", offered that "if you wonder whether or not I have gonads, why don't you invite me down to the office there and I'll come there and show you what I've got." This was unequivocally an offer made over public airways to visually display his genitals. Clearly such a statement made by a deputy sheriff in an environment as public as the one Baca chose would result in sanctions for any number of department violations.' --The Harris County Star Them equating Baca threatening to show them what he's got meaning he actually means to expose himself is the same as saying that John and Ken meant that there was literally nobody who had the sexual organs necessary to defend their position.

    Ack, I'm paying attention again.

*cough* Damn straight :) The Faramir stuff really pissed me off. Denethor's family drama will certainly lose some of its thunder. At least Faramir semi-renewed himself at the end. This was the single worst plot change in the first two movies combined. So much for the whole "blood of Numenor" storyline. I doubt now that we will even see the white tree. Jackson should have spent more time explaining the history of men rather than wasting time with that whole 'Aragorn fell off the cliff' claptrap.

I disagree that capitalism is working against the free software movement, and I do not see free software conforming to a socialistic distribution system, because the model of free software distribution has no single governing body. It has no regulatory system at all. The reason why it works is because software doesn't need one.

Capitalism itself shouldn't care about what's free, it doesn't concern capitalism. One could make the argument that preventing the distribution of a free product is socialistic, at least as socialistic as it is capitalist, since they are both economic systems which don't care about what's free.

Most of our bitching about "capitalism" comes from our anger at companies over IP rights and the lot, which I would make the argument, are actually socialistic laws, where a regulatory body is attempting to reward innovation instead of letting the market reward innovation, which IMHO would be the true capitalistic way.

However, I do not feel that it is somehow immoral or decadent to devote time to computer operating systems rather than running in political circles, accomplishing nothing, or doing electrical wiring at the Wendy's. Everyone is interested in something, and one cannot help but look at things with a starting perspective. A job's relative physical strain has only a partial bearing on its true worth.

If I want to lose by job over a Linux issue, that's my business and my right because I am fully allowed to pursue happiness. This does not make me decadent or immoral. (I have no chlidren..)

Also consider that all of us typing these posts are doing so via computer. As we continue to push clock speeds higher and higher, power consumption in processors increases - power consumption in CMOS is something like cfv^2 (f: frequency, v: voltage, c: capacitance) so the faster we run'em the more power they take. Now consider that a 2GHz Athlon or Pentium packs all the power that your average Joe user will ever need - perhaps now that these processors are consuming in the 75 to 100 watt range, we should be putting more effort into reducing power consumption, instead of increasing clock speeds?

Hah! I love the idea of criticizing people who use UI's that use unnecessary CPU cycles with this argument! A whole new angle on that FVWM article earlier :) FVWM--the environmentally friendly WM.
