I think the term is subjectable depending on the context in which it's used. Scalalable does have many definitions but I don't think that they are all wrong except for one.
His definition suits him well but it might not be helpful for me.
I might use scalable just to say that an application can easily (with little or no modification) handle 100x more users. This doesn't necessarily mean that the difference in system load varies a minimal specific amount per each extra request. All that matters is that it will work with higher demand. Who cares how or why.
I think scalable can also mean that an app can handle 10,000 users when hosted on a single machine but when put on a cluster of computers it can handle exponentially more users. To me that is a scalable application.
Scalable has no set definition in the contexts of applications.
Until mozilla.org updates the browser to block the news ads and once again mozilla users are ahead of the curve and windows users have to wait until the next OS from Microsoft.
I've been using a firefox extension that stops all flash animations from starting and replace it with a box to click on to start the animation so I don't get any anoying flash ads.
You think a studio like Fox would release these disposable DVDs alongside their regular ones to video stores?
No. They will force all the blockbusters (and even small shops) to get the disposable ones. They simply won't sell regular DVDs to video rental stores.
Windows XP only supports 2 procesors so it's likely that it wouldn't install on a machine with 4 visible processors.
You'd have to turn off hyper threading to get down to 2 processors. Who needs 4 processors in a non server environment anyway? It's annoying enough having two processors with one barely getting used since most apps are not multi processor away and Windows XP being quite dumb about load balancing.
I wonder if you can turn off hyper threading for the install and then turn it back on after you've run XP once, would it notice the extra processors and cease to work or would it see the 4 and not do anything, after all it's not like your changing mother boards so it might not notice enough to trigger the licensing check.
I don't see a need for hyper threading one dual core chips. It's redundant.
How is this modded insightful? It should be rated ignorant or uninformed if there was one.
You wouldn't "see" any bluetooth devices on your computer because it's not meant to broadcast to everyone far away. You want everyone walking by with a laptop or bluetooth pda to pickup and connect to your cell phone or laptop?
Bluetooth is not supposed to compete with Wifi and won't. WiFi is for IP networks, Bluetooth is just a wireless connection for peripherals.
It would be like comparing Wireless USB to Wi-Fi, they have different uses. Just because they are both wireless doesn't mean they should compete. It's like saying my remote control for my tv is slower than my wireless network so it's going to die off soon.
You think that Microsoft will allow the competition to last for another 12 years? They are selling the XBox at a loss for a reason, to steal marketshare from Sony and Nitendo. They're well on their to doing so and I think "Xbox 2" will be a huge success. The Xbox is doing very well not after having a very poor start and everyone expecting the worst. Now that they have gained all these fans, what do you think the next launch will be like? Very favorable.
Once Microsoft has strongarmed developers into becoming XBox exclusive, and start patenting ridiculous features they'll raise the price and lower the performance of the XBox as they see fit, and people will buy it. I think it will happen sooner than you think. Atleast in North America.
The ScreenSavers often featured Linux. About once every few weeks they had Chris Dibolla (sp?) come on the show and talk about things open source, best distros for news, etc.
TechTV often covered the Mac aswell which made me happy. Call For Help and The Screen Savers also recommended the use of Firefox and Mozilla. I am sad to see station go away.
This new merged channel is ridiculous with shows that look like they were shot in my basement and hosted by random idiots. TechTV has a fairly wide audience in the geek world before but now it's limited to teenage spazes.
I don't think it will be at all. As Apple has proved there is a demand for clustered computing for people without IT departments, or have a small IT department.
Not everyone has a Linux expert on hand to setup your clusters, or Linux knowledgeable users to use the software afterwards.
The NGage did have horrible games. I remember looking at a list of all the games review on gaming sites about 4 months after the NGage came out every single game had gotten a terrible score.
NGage had the misfortune of having both terrible hardware and terrible games.
Yet they are stupid enough to try and rerelease the same games on SLIGHTLY different hardware. Ditch the phone entirely man, then it would have a good chance to do well.
1) You will need a 3ghz processor to read email if microsoft has anything to do with it.
2) 40gb might seem like more than enough today, but hundreds of gigabytes might be necessary in a future where we all download dvds, own digital video cameras and edit our own home movies.
Just like many of us have photo libraries with thousands of photos, perhaps in a few years when digital camcorders are very affordable, we'll all have thousands of hours of dvd quality footage.
Oops.
And?

3D computing environments won't be quite useful until we get a 3d input. A mouse is meant to move around a 2d desktop, not a 3d environment.
We need a 3d input device, perhaps like the ones used in Minority report? That's how I see 3d displays becoming useful.
People would actually be able to figure out how ot use it?
Yes, Counter Strike: Condition Zero is a perfect example of what good can happen when a game is shuffled between developers.
Oh wait...

Yes. Very scientific. Was it the first time you ran the program? If so than the program is compiled. It's not anytime you run it after that.
Was that JVM running? If not then it had to load the very large VM before running the program.
Try running it a second time and then report back.
I think this is a joke but with the amount of idiots out there it's hard to be certain.
Web hosts.
If only my typo check + preview before submitting was redundant.

You know you're wrong when even Slashdot doesn't agree with your anti-ms bashing.
Huh?
You can do software raid on Mac OS X out of the box of course but you can also do hardware RAID with the use of add-on RAID cards.

Windows HPC WILL suceed.
Ever think that they might CHANGE windows?
This might not just be Windows Server 2003 with an extra service, it might just be the windows kernel and the required code for HPC.
Everyone says they want to be able to copy cds so they can backup their apps, games, and dvds. Bull.
If the dvd falls apart and isn't your fault you can CALL THE MANUFACTURER AND GET A REPLACEMENT.
If you snap a cd in half well too bad, be careful with your belongings, don't let your kids handle them if you don't want them to break.
Afterall do you expect someone to replace your broken plates?
Although I'd like to see someone try and send a broken CD to a manufacturer and ask for a new one. They might just give you a new one.
It's to use at home or work.
I believe this is what they are using. They are not specific on details but they mentioned CodeWeaver being included and also mentions TransGaming.
I don't think these guys have done anything revolutionary, they just bundles some commercial apps with their distro.
