  1. Troops on Semper WiFi · · Score: 5, Informative

Things like this are great. Troops fighting for us deserve to be able to communicate with their friends and family to keep them sane. This really reminds me of the http://www.gmail4troops.com/ project. If you have an extra gmail invite around in you inbox, why not give it to someone who could use it to receive video and pictures from loved ones.

I guess it might appeal to people more, but honestly how much of a difference is b vs g going to make on a palm, are you gunna be downloading large files onto your 128mb memory card? IMO b should be fast enough for anyone using a palm.

I think in most cases a 12" notebook would work better. But, palm's are useful if you need something really small that could fit in your pocket and not have to carry a 4lbs small notebook. Palm's are great for keeping track of names, apointments, general information and taking notes while on the run.

While this is a cool feature, I'm not sure if it alone will be able to save Tivo. There are so many cheaper alternatives, and I'm sure they will be able to add a similar feature in too. Personally when I'm watching TV(which I almost never have time for as of late), I don't wanna be reading stuff online, I just want to relax and watch a movie or show.

I have to say that I agree. These tools are great for newbie computer users. But I really think educating people on how to read a URL and not have to rely on a tool like this. If they don't understand the URL, using a 'caller id' program may not always be affective at preventing scams.

Also, I would like to see a program that would pre-scan a URL and if it appears to be a fake Paypal or Visa site to put the actual domain, and display a warning to alert newbie users.

So the tech place got the girl to pay for a 10 1/2 hours of labour for a format, install of Win98 and Norton Anti-Virus? When I saw that, I thought the article would be total Microsoft bashing, but hey, they ended up recomending to use Windows. I'd have to say that this true in the business world, almost everyone that I've talked to who uses a computer at work for word processing, etc is totally afraid of linux and think it is this scary beast. Until people can work with linux and not be afraid to try things, ms will win.

Well, not 100% true in all cases. For our major programming assignment in 2nd year, we were required to create a library in C, then impliment it and add some more functionality by using Python. This forced us to learn the language on our own. Which was a really good experience, and I really liked the language. I think more people who are java programmers should be trying Python for smaller programs, cause I was able to pump small programs out much faster than with Java..

My school has an upper year course for designing PS2 games, and currently it is very hard to get into. They have to keep a small number of people in the class due to the large costs involved in purchasing an SDK and console. Also, from what I have heard, the programming for PS2 is difficult because it uses assembly with multiple processors/gpu's. Hopefully this new open source side will lead to easier access to the development side, increasing programers and allow for more people to get in the industry.
