Actually, now that I think about it, Star Trek almost suffered the same fate. They tried to cancel that show after every season, it wasn't the moneymaker that The Powers That Be wanted, and look at the franchise today.

Don't worry about a kill switch. Just make sure that each one has a preset kill limit. Then, knowing their weakness, all you need to do is send wave after wave of your own men at them until they reach their limit and shut down.
Canada is okay as long as you don't mind it being okay for the police to knock down your door for a domestic noise complaint w/o a search warrant if you're registered w/ them as owning a firearm.

I also know some old-school UNIX admins and mainframe guys who cringe at the notion that a reboot can be a viable way of troubleshooting/making the problem go away.
One way you can find out what the problem is and prevent it from happening again. The other way you just pour gasoline on it, throw a couple matches in and hope that whatever caused the problem isn't fireproof.
Doing the magic dance, pressing the red button and hoping that everything gets better on its own isn't that different from Cargo Cult science or faith-based economic policy. It shouldn't be that hard to see why people who are supposed to know better don't like it.
If you have to pull out your phone, fiddle with the buttons, start up a calculator application and fiddle with the buttons again just to figure out that that the $27.50 plus 12% tax that you owe is substantially less than the $34 you were just charged, then perhaps you should just give up and expect to pay a 10% innumeracy tax on every transaction you make for the rest of your life.
Saying "But I have a calculator! Somewhere." is no substitute for being able to perform simple math on your own.
