Right, but are you mistaking the Freedoms granted to software by the GPL as freedoms granted to the user? ..."Free as in Freedom" more clearly explains the idea that the software itself is Free Heh, if you just state the other side of that argument, it's got to be one of the best taglines ever for the BSD license :) I think it's both intuitive and correct for users to expect people to have more rights than things, because every moral person has it ingrained in their thought that people are more important than things. Also, does the phrase, "Free as in Freedom" actually connote anything at all, being a self-referring definition?

If you're willing to go up to about $4,000, shop around and see if you can find an InFocus Screenplay 5700. It's MSRPed at $5K, and I know plenty of places sell it for $4K, maybe you could find a good deal to bring it down further. It's a 16:9 widescreen, DLP projector running at 1024x768 with HDTV support up to 1080p, recommended for use with a 100" screen. http://www.projectorcentral.com/infocus_screenplay _5700.htm

That's true, bou can't downplay how much it matters to have all services off by default. Half of the Microsoft disasters could have been averted that way (obviously they would still affect the fraction of users who needed the service, but there would be no 'net-wide catastrophe), and Mac OS X now has a big enough market share that it couldn't get by just by being small. Plenty of worms have been very successful focusing on programs that have relatively few copies installed, but they have only been able to do so when they were services on by default in at least, say, a few respectably popular Linux distros. The area where market share does make a difference is in the fact that Mac OS X is not Windows, not Linux, and not x86, which is enough to baffle 90% of script kiddies. While most people realize the security advantage of being on non-x86 hardware, running on something other than Windows or Linux is also a very good deterrent: if you look at SANS's intruder rating scale, running BSD or OS X would put an attacker at 4/5 or 5/5 in the OS category.

The problem with internal sound cards in general is that the inside of a computer case is not exactly the ideal environment for analog data that is sensitive to distortion and noise. But as you said, this is only a problem if you're still using analog outputs. As long as you're using a digital output, save some space and get an internal, but if you're still using analog outputs, you still get a little cleaner sound from an external.

You're right, but Apple's cut is thought to be somewhere in the 25-35% range; remember that Apple cut the same contract with everyone: they take the same cut out of indie labels as they do out of RIAA labels, and I think it's safe to say that Apple isn't taking a 78% cut of RIAA sales.

  14. Adobe ditching video? on Adobe Drops Mac Support For Premiere · · Score: 1

I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't part of a larger Adobe strategy to deemphasize their video products: clearly they have refocused their effort on their print products: PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat have all seen massive revisions, and all are going to be updated again within months, while Adobe's video editing line has been rotting. Their print applications have risen dramatically above the competition, while their video products have been crushed by the competition (although After Effects is fortunate not to have much competition). Perhaps they're just waiting for Avid to surpass them on Windows the same way Apple did on Macs, and then they'll drop Premiere entirely.

Another groundbreaking thought from their mission statement: "Non-advocacy: Our common goal is simply to provide software for people who choose to use Mac OS X & Darwin, not to promote or advocate any particular operating system." OSS with non-advocacy! As for the rendering engines, there is very little difference in rendering speed between Safari and Camino, although each browser renders certain kinds of pages much faster than the other, oveall it's a draw. I haven't faced off Konq and Firebird recently, but I would imagine Firebird still has a slight lead as Camino tends to have older rendering code than Firebird code and Konq tends to have older rendering code than Safari.
