  1. In other news... on Video Games Linked To Child Aggression · · Score: 1

"CNN is running a story this morning that explains new research showing a correlation between bipedism and aggression in children. The study monitored groups of US and Japanese children, asking them to rate their violent behavior over a period of several months while they used two limbs for locomotion. The study concludes that it has "pretty good evidence" that there is a link between walking on two legs and childhood aggression."

I've been using GOG since they released the private beta, and it's really good!

Being an "old-but-not-pacman-old-school" gammer, I just loved the fact that I can get some old favorites for a very reasonable price, and without DRM!

I even got the chance to buy Messiah, wich I never got to play, although I can remember the hype quite clearly ;)

It's a really great project and I'm looking forward to see even more oldies-but-goldies on GOG.

The industry should really wake up and realize that we the people still enjoy the old games and will pay money for them, as long as the companies don't try to extort us or push DRM down our throats.

  5. What about Windows Mobile? on SDK Shoot Out, Android Vs. IPhone · · Score: 3, Interesting
How does the Windows Mobile devices stand in this "war"? They are easy to develop to (at least based on the number of applications available), they have been in the market for much longer, and they don't have any of the iPhone restrictions regarding the instalation of applications.

It's really weird to read that "Based on raw market share alone, the iPhone seems likely to remain the smartphone developer's platform of choice"... Don't tell me that the iPhone already outselled every single Windows-based PDA/Smartphone sold in the last 10-or-so years...

Now, I see the Android as a much serious threat to Microsoft in the smartphone playground than the iPhone. If the Android devices are polished and slick enough, the public might catch on them, and with the openness regarding the development process, the comunity would surely correct the eventual rough edges. That's simply not the case with the iPhone: why can't I use another email client on the iPhone? Oh, right, it "competes" with the native aplication...

Well, I don't know about the US, but here in Portugal, the lowest pensions (wich are the ones that most retired people have) don't even cover the cost of all the medical expenses that older people normally have. Heck, most of the time it's not enough even to *eat* properly the whole month!

Granted, those are generations that had a very hard time (working in farming, fishing, industry and things like that) and here in Portugal the state "sponsored" retirement pension is very recent (a lot of retirees never discounted towards retirement).

However, the way things are going, I'm not sure that there will be enough money to pay a proper pension to everyone, when the "X-Generation" begins to reach retirement age.

  8. Not just in the USA on Laboring Longer a Growing Trend For Americans · · Score: 1
Here in Portugal we have the same problem. And I bet that around the rest of Europe as well.

Some hints about the root of the problem seems to be the low birth rate and higher life expectancy. Basically, we aren't popping enough kids to work their asses off to pay for our pensions.

It seems that the whole "social state" was based around the fact that the birth rate must be higher than the death rate, or else we will end up with a bunch of old f*rts, with no kids to yell at to get off their respective lawns.

People should really look into private retirement pensions, or things will get really ugly, really fast... well, not that fast, but in a couple of decades.

  9. Re:Absence of real competitors on Compact Disc Turns 26, Has a Bright Future · · Score: 1

Presumably that's because the licensing fees were too high, and then the media was too expensive on top.

Yeah, that and the fact that "Joe SixPack" might not tell the diference in sound quality between a standard Audio-CD and a SA-CD or a DVD-Audio.

For the vast majority of consumers, as long as it sounds/looks "good enough", there is no reason to change to another format. Sure, there is always a small something-phile market that can tell the diference, but the "visual-philes" couldn't save the Laser Disk either. And it's a superior format to VHS (or so I was told).

The DVD was diferent. A DVD has significant better quality than a VHS tape (even Joe SixPack can tell that), but on top of that, it offers much more content than a VHS tape.

I guess that "extras" are easier to sell on a visual medium than a audio one. Sure, we all love "b-sides" and unreleased tracks, but I don't think that many people would pay to hear a "audio comment" on Britney Spears new album ;) If its done on video... well, thats why sometimes an exclusive DVD is attached to an CD album.

I'll edit your comment so I can show youo what I mean:

You're saying this doesn't hurt anyone? By distributing massive files using P2P, you are adversely affecting network throughput. This, in turn, may cost a business additional money to pay for a better service, costlier equipment, or to decide not to spend the extra money. Either of these choices may cause the business to experience a financial hardship, which then leads to the failure of that business. No harm?

What about the content of those files? What if the content of one or more of those files contains malware/virus? An unknowning user thinks that the lasted flick at the theaters is a good target for downloading, fires up his torrent/emule client, downloads it, tries to open it, and then ends up with the results of that malware. They end up either paying someone to fix the problem, give up and toss the internet experience, go buy a new computer, or some other option that costs one way or another.

See? If we think about it, P2P and spam are technically "siblings". Ok, you might say that P2P is not just used for piracy, there are legitimate uses for P2P, etc. Well, there are legitimate uses for bulk messaging as well, and as long as either is done in a law abiding way, things should go smoothly.

Notice that I'm not condoning spam (or P2P), it's just that if we start to go down the slipery-slope, we might end up with legislation banning any activity on the internet that evolves contacting more than 2 hosts at the same time. Hey, better yet, we might end up with legislation that "bans" people from having internet access... oh wait, they're doing it already in France... and UK is next.

  12. Double standard? on Spam King and Family Dead In Murder-Suicide · · Score: 1
So... Let's see if I understand it correctly: if a teenager downloads a couple of Britney Spears albums (or as much music as he can get his hands on), "it's all right", "he didn't actually hurt no one", "downloading is not theft", "everybody does it", and so on.

On the other hand, if a guy sends email messages (granted, we are talking about an awesomely huge number of messages, but still they are just messages), people start calling for his head, "death to all spammers" and stuff? I don't get it. Really.

In what way is spam diferent from downloading stuff from the net? I mean, "moraly", if you want. Spam is just email messages. Plain and simple. Zeros and ones. The guy didn't steal anything, he didn't harm anyone. What, spam clutters your mailbox and prevents you from finding those really important emails full with PPTs with naked chicks? Oh, ok, them...

I think that things are getting out of hand on the matter of punishing spam. Remember that for the politicians, there ain't much diference between a spammer and a downloader ("they both are turning our internet on a terrible place for our children!!"), so one of these days, the way things are evolving, they might take the next logical step and actualy punish downloaders the way they punish spammers.

I mean, come on! If the guy was blackmailing someone, or doing actual harm to IT infrastructures, that's one thing. But in terms of "damaging" the infrastructures with the load that spam generates, he's no diferent from the emulers and torrenters out there.

The atmosphere was somehow tense too (try those orphanage and asylum levels at nigh), and I loved the way you would have to fight 20 enemies at the same time, just like Classic Doom! From the (doomed) main character to the twisted monsters, to the secondary characters to the antagonists to the story, to the setting, to the music, it all comes together in such a way that you can't avoid it: you'll feel moved by it, enraged by it, frustrated by it. You'll be sucked into that world, and you'll be in front row for the emotional events that will be unveiled. Yes, it's "just a game", but then again, Shakespeare masterpieces are "just books" too, and that doesn't detract a bit from their geniality.
