I'll probably get flamed for suggesting it around here, but what the hell.

The single biggest barrier I would have to buying things from you isn't the fact that I'm forced to buy a complete album, or that I don't have a very wide assortment of format options.

What's going to stop me from buying anything from this site is appearance and presentation.

It's just very difficult for me to justify handing over my credit card number to people who spell "hear" as "here" and "sponsor" as "sponser" in the first hundred or so words on the main page.

Maybe the target audience doesn't care about professionalism, it's hard to say.

However, I do consider myself part of the target audience, and it matters to me, so you've lost at least one potential sale right there.

    Flame away!

A: Virtually anything that runs on a Windows-based machine today will still run on a "Palladium" machine (there are some esoteric exceptions[1]). If you currently have a machine that runs both Linux and Windows, you would be able to have that same functionality on a "Palladium" machine.

[1] These exceptions include the following:

Some debuggers may need to be updated to work in the "Palladium" environment, but they can still work.
Some special performance tools may need to be updated.
Software that writes directly to TCPA hardware will need to be updated.
Memory scrub routines (at the hardware level) will need attention.
Third-party crash dump software may need to be updated.
BIOS mode hibernation features will need to be updated to work with "Palladium."

Unfortunately, it's also their most expensive show to create, but what the hell else do they have? If for instance, some posted decided post a single link to some obscure worthless website that nobody's ever heard of, let alone linked to in a comment such as this one, it will be ranked accordingly to the total of slashdot's calculated 'popularity' based weight.

Google does not, and probably can not distinguish between actual content on this site and inane comments made by people such as myself.

Is this a large flaw? I really can't say, and I certainly don't have a solution to propose. I still say google is the best thing out there, and beats the hell out of inktomi's paid listings, which power an ever growing number of search engines.

This may not appear immediately relevant, but bear with me.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with ZeoSync's claims, but if you can impose a semblance of order on something that only appears chaotic, you can do some pretty cool stuff.

Take for example this little demo at this website in germany. (I realize what the domain looks like, there's nothing for sale or license, trust me). The actual download link is about halfway down the page.

This isn't "compression" in the conventional sense, but they still manage to contain a demo that contains hundreds of megs of textures and samples, in addition to the engine itself in *64kb*. Now thats a hell of a ratio.

They do this not by storing the raw data, but instead storing the instructions needed to reconstruct the data as it is needed.

Granted, I realize that they only accomplished this with their own data, but I don't think taking this a step further to an arbitrary set of textures and sounds is impossible. Granted, this idea won't work for all types of data, and also can not be considered "lossless", (hell, it's not even strictly compression) but I still think it's incredible that you can get this high quality results out of something this small.

(Disclaimer: The above link is to a demo that requires directx 8.1 and I sincerely doubt will run under wine. It also doesn't work with every video card out there. I've scanned the binary, and it doesn't appear to have any viruses or trojans, but I won't guarantee it. If you can't accept the risk, don't download the binary.)

(No sense using my DSL to get news from an outsourced provider when I have one two hops away on my cable that provides much higher throughput).

I have to admit that it's mostly a cheap hack, but honestly I'm pretty happy with it, and the biggest cost was the time it took to educate my sorry ass to the point I could get it to do what I wanted.

The 'secure' version also does s/mime though I can't personally vouch for it's quality, I've never used it, though from what I understand it encrypts all of your local data, supports OpenPGP, S/MIME with x.509 certs, and a bunch of other good stuff. Like I said, I only use the normal version, and it's quite well integrated with OpenPGP and quite cheap as well. The other version costs around 140, which most around these parts people will find rather steep I guess. /me prepares to get moderated into oblivion for committing the sin of advocating a non open source solution.
