The diffrence is Peru was pushing for "Free Software"(read open standards), whereas CA is pushing for "Free Software"(read RMS). The first is the correct action, the second is just as shady as mandating that MS be the only software used by gvt.
The problem with ogg if it hasn't changed is there isn't a integer decoder. Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't follow the music decoder mess very much, sorry), but I believe thats the reason its so hard to put onto hardware.
I recently atteneded a public debate over the future of the IT department at our citys HS. I (while dressed reasonally professional, but completly unprepaired) had to do RH's entire presentation for them with no facts or case studies to back me up (trust me, even with LD debate experience, it's hard to back OSS with no facts and avoid looking fanatical) . The school ended up wasting 20k (impossible to argue, the machiens in question were used soley to browse the web and basic word processing) because they failed to allow me to schedule an appointment for a RH representative to come in.
I've taken a much more active role in the schools IT planning since then. They get a free techie one night a week in exchange for me having heads up to get OSS/non-MS presentations prepaired in time for bids.
The funny part is, the reason they spent the money is because the current solution is "proven unhackable", and my solution they had heard was a "hacker os"[sic], yet all of my sons friends seem to know about 50 ways around every security aspect of the systems they chose...
if you weigh over 100lbs you can easilly consume 1k mg caffine before you start to get to redline levels, most people could probably consume around 2k.
Not to mention as you get to those densities you start to produce a depressant to slow down your body, so it'd be very hard to actually OD consuming it at normall distilations.
away and come up with a "preimier" ad free network.. oh whats that? They don't have content anyone would pay for... hm
Why don't all the Real Time Dependant (tv/radio) media use thier current tech to come up with other forms of revenue instead of trying to sue new buisness models out of existance? Imagine if monks had tried to turn the printing press into a "hacking tool" and a "Devils Machine, it does the work only a human should!", where would we be today?
It's complely possible for a tv be 100% subscription based, and there is no reason against it. Just because the current model is based on advertising dosen't mean that it's the only way for them to make a buck.
A change in the paradigim isn't bad, and if technology dosen't hurt anything, it's *always* a good thing. People require jobs, so people will create jobs around whatever the tech of the day is, not the other way around. If you worry about jobs when making tech you are hurting humanity.

reducing a eq. to have 1 variable on the left side is algebra. Doing simple linear arithmatic to the points on the screen required a fundamental understanding of algebraic graphing. Perhaps you didn't get far enough in math, but recursive functions are clearly tied to advanced algebra (or calc? it's been a while). I often use algebraic graphing when trying to manipluate several distinct counters in non-trivial loops, it makes it really easy to see intersections and cutoff points (this is perhaps my first year cs teachers fault though).
I do this constanly, most of the time it's not even on the conscious level anymore. I know of no programming language that you don't have to do this in, if you know one please let me know.
It's funny, I've always found "Hacker" products are the closest thing to what computers promise, easy of use and lots of functionality. Products made from "Marketing" tend to be a bunch of prety but often slightly less functionality with it.
Examples (:me puts on flame retardant suit) 1: Mozilla is clearly more functional than IE, IE is clearly "pretier" than mozilla in its default state. 2: (Your WM of choice here, to avoid the argument, I personally like KDE) is clearly more functional than XP's interface (at least once it's fully tweaked), XP's interface is clearly pretier (it's becoming less so with each generation of user class WM's). 3: Winamp/xmms just works, some later versions are getting bloated, but not that much, on the other side we have Real and to a lesser extent WMP (though WMP is fairly decent, Winamp is still cleaner than it for simply playing music).
The examples continue but those were the most obvious when I was writing this, I'm sure everyone can think of parallels to other industries. Basically it boils down to "Marketing exists to tell the consumer he wants something, Engineering exists to make the consumer want something", thats perhaps the most succulent way to state it.
Because MS's "solutions" cost money, so if there isn't a real problem no way is anyone going to fork over cash. The majority of america won't upgrade until all of a sudden thier games break after W98 expires and DirectX stops getting developed for it. W98 is the best OS from almost every aspect if you aern't worried about a crash once a day, and your more interested in cost/performance than stability/stupid features that only "l33t" that watch TechTV could possibly find usefull.

I've spent the last few minuies trying to think of a working exploit, since they can change the UELA at any time, you naturally have to be in a constant state of acceptance in order for that to work.
What is stoping someone from buying photoshop, running it to do what they need, and returning it 4 years from now because they disagree to the UELA, and demanding a full refund?
If the UELA is a contract, and the other side can modify it freely, and your only recourse is to stop using the product, is that really a contract?
There is no way that could hold up in the eyes of the law. The simple fact you agreed to a contract that stated it could be changed to *ANYTHING* without your consent, is justification enough to claim insanity?
No one will be satisfied with "same as life", it will have to be so much better than life that there is no room for inovation before fps freaks are happy.
Honestly Q3 is better than most cartoons at being realistic, and in 10 years I bet sports games will be almost impossible to tell from a live broadcast. That still dosen't remove the need for real-time cinematic effects, and even new "technologies" that we haven't even begun to dream of today, perhaps sub-pixel shading in realtime on all cloth/skin textures in the game to get things started. The beauty of 3d rendering by a maching, is there is no theoretical limit to how "realistic" it can be.
It's so rediciously regulated, we have to charge 5x the cost of an item to break the origional purchase price in the amount we get from insurance companies.
If one were to abolish all regulation in the field everyones hospital bills would plumit overnight (though other bad things would happen also, but thats a diffrent topic). Currently my hospital to choose a random item has a 17.41x multiplier on the cost of using a X-Ray machine for a "standard" x-ray (eg broken arm), this will net us a few cents to a dollar after we get done collecting real hard cash from your insurance company, who will thusly start paying us less so we have to charge more. It makes medical treatment a imposibility for the non-insured. A simple ER visit for a non-trivial issue can easily break 1k in the course of a few hours because of it, which is absolutly disgusting.
Except AC dosen't have the same type of drive that EQ does. It's more of a d2 style leveling than EQ. EQ you set a goal (60 with DC for instance) and work to achieve it, the moment you get it, there are other goals. It's absolutly impossible to quit playing EQ unless you have no goals left, which is a very hard thing to have happen if your the type of person that plays EQ.
Also AC dosen't cater to uber players nearly as well as EQ, and part of what makes a good MUD in lots of peoples opinions (and EQ is just a prety mud, don't kid yourselfs) is the fact that there are some amazingly l33t people killing sleeper while everyone else is out enjoying thier "mundane" groups. Without the uber players EQ wouldn't be what it is today. The tales of waking sleeper etc are what keep level 30's in "Awe" of the game, and what keep the ubers interested in the new content.
