That poster is a photoshop mock-up that someone did of what the iPhone *might* look like, and it's been out for over a year. Apple still denies there is any such product in the works.
Ever hear of the HTC Universal (XDA Exec, Qtek 9000, T-Mobile MDA Pro, I-Mate Jasjar, etc)?
VGA screen, 520mhz processor, 3G (UTMS/HSDPA), WiFi, Bluetooth, dual cameras for video-conferencing, Windows Mobile 5.0, 128MB of RAM (I believe), and a SD slot.
It also has a swivel screen that opens up into a full QWERTY keyboard. The screen flips around and covers the keyboard for portrait/phone usage (although there is no number pad, which I guess could be a little annoying for some people).
If I had to pick a super device that does everything... I'd choose this one. If I had the money ($700+ on eBay), I'd pick myself up one... but I'd like some hands-on testing first, and sadly as they're not sold in the US, I'm never going to get to try before I buy.
Out of curiousity, did any of the above posters actually read the article? Or even the Slashdot post?
This isn't about Apache's Web Server at all. It's about the Apache foundation, and running projects with them. Apache's web server is just an example of a project that is run under the Apache Foundation... and any bloat / hard configuration in httpd has little to do with Apache Foundation's "overhead".
Looks like eBay is hurting... and it's not just because of the Skype purchase.
From the article: "EBay said it had 168.1 registered users for its online auctions as of the end of September."

As far as I know, you can't hide viruses in mp3 files yet, so I don't see how putting an mp3 player in your car stereo is going to be a security risk. This is just the same as your car CD player being able to read mp3s, except on a different medium.
You can take your tin foil hat off now.

VW Goes USB

There are a few Japanese/Chinese (one of the two) car stereo companies that have been doing this for a while. There's one I was checking out on eBay called "SoundStorm" that allowed for USB and Secure Digital slots. I'm not sure if you could drop an iPod shuffle in there or anything, but my guess is you can.
I think JVC might even make a model with USB and SD. I know they at least make one with SD.
Regardless, VW isn't really being innovative, they're just picking up on some cheap stereo technology and (hopefully) improving it (my guess is these $90 stereos with SD and USB aren't too great sound-wise).
But that's not the way it works: instead, you have to connect the phone to your computer (using a slow USB connection) and get songs from your iTunes music library - just as you do with a conventional iPod.
Strange, I seem to get about 3KB/sec most of the time off Cingular's network here in Maryland. I really don't see the benefit in downloading 4MB files off Cingular's network, especially if you don't have the unlimited data plan. What's USB 1.0 rated at? Over 1 MB/sec? That seems to be about 300x as fast as downloading off the phone network.
Granted, it's not as portable for downloading files, but is it really worth waiting half an hour for downloading a song where there isn't EDGE or EVDO? (I haven't yet found a place where I get "EDGE" speeds in the Baltimore area).
Not everyone has a WiFi Pocket PC device. Lots of people have Bluetooth-enabled cell phones.
I don't know how much this thing is going to cost, but I imagine that it's reasonable ($30 or so) then it's less than the price of most bluetooth headsets and obviously lower than the price of a PocketPC (I'm not saying you won't get more value in a PocketPC, but that has nothing to do with this niche market).
The purpose of this device is taking what you already have (or the lack of what you have) and making it more useful.
If you look at the picture you'll realize that there is *some* usefulness in this. Take a laptop, pick up a wifi spot, and you can use your cellphone to make free long distance/roaming calls.
Those seem like features that should have been in a 1.0 release a long time ago. I remember when I used Linux a few years ago clipboard support was horrible. It works out of the box for the most part now, but really...
Well... I imagine if they offer X ammount of dollars per flaw in a certain system and the person asks for more money, then they aren't reputable. If a "researcher" was previously getting no money for the bugs they found, they'd probablytake the little money they can get (I'm guessing TippingPoint won't be giving out a whole lot). If they're actually selling the thing to the highest bidder, I'm guessing TP isn't going to join in the bidding.
By the same argument, if you have a radio, it should be legal to download the music that is played on the radio. This argument becomes even stronger if you have XM radio or the like.
Just use AIM's Direct Connect feature. I'm pretty sure when you're directly connected with someone, the things you send don't go through AIM's servers...

It's always good to know that humans are second to mammoths in genetic research :)

Haha, if you go into the store they have a "Lunar Tax" of $1.51 on everything.
Those Lunarians are already imposing export taxes!

It looks like GIMP with a different toolkit. Or for that matter, just switch to the OS-X gtk skin.
This is a different GUI, not a different toolkit.

You aren't using your cell phone minutes. You're connecting via BlueTooth to your computer/laptop and using it's WiFi connection to place calls.

I believe the nanorods were supposed to be stronger than diamond. The nanotubes seem to be similar to diamonds, only very good conductors as well.
I don't think they're dupes, but who knows.
The difference is you can use IE's broken rendering engine to go to all the sites that depend on it :p

There's way too much money to be made to just not continue the series with so much hype still alive.

There's actually quite a bit of difference between Civ 1 and 3... 1 and 2 on the other hand... not so much.

I think what everyone fails to realize is this...
You can't WRITE to a LiveCD. I imagine you can write to the iPod while booting off it.
It can be used for other things than rescuing a system due to the fact that you can write back to what you're booting off of.
Is there a reason to wait until someone breaks the existing algorithm before moving to a stronger one?
It seems to me that if you start working on implementing the stronger ones BEFORE your existing one is broken?
An ounce of prevention...
Hi Luke.
