In order for that to work one would have to delete every version of the linux kernel in the CVS repository prior to the spell correction to "get rid of the evidence". Then one would have to delete all the releases on every mirror and CD distribution.
Where i work we are very seriously working towards ridding our machine room of SCO forever.
Thank GOD we had the insight to do this 7 years ago. We were using Dell Power edge servers, so we just gave them to the NT group and bought Sun gear to replace it. Life was good after that.
That was a nice try but I don't think so. Verizon has the right to log whatever crosses their network. Just like I have the right to record information regarding someone port scanning my system. It's Verizon's hardware, not the customer's.
I saw an episode of FBI files where they needed finger prints of some dude, so they followed him around and the guy threw away a coffee cup and the agents retreived it from the trash. I think once it hits the trash you give up all rights to it.
If they did their stats similar to the stats over at distributed.net I think it would be alot more accurate. And it would also spur competition amongst the piraters. I think it would be cool to see who could pirate the most.
Maybe they won't notice the 50K to save MM, but they might notice if they have to renew all their copyrights. I imagine they have alot of them. Then they would have to answer to their shareholders as to whether keeping the copyrights is still profitable. And it doesn't mean they have to stop using the copyright. It just means others can use the work.
I'm not singling out big bad companies either. Works from individuals also should eventually fall into the public domain. It wouldn't be 50K to get the copyright initially. Just to be able to keep it for a really long time. If the work isn't generating that kind of money then why not let it go?
Then why 50 years? If the sole purpose of this is to get things the owners don't care about why not make the time frame more reasonable, like 10 years. That is plenty of time for whoever owns it to make their money by which time sales have dropped off and they don't care so it falls into PD. Then after 10 years have the $1 renewal occur every year until they stop caring.
Personally, I think a copyright renewal fee of $50,000, which increases every year with inflation, would really make owners think deeply as to whether they care or not. Think of it as the Public getting reinbursed for the copyrighted material that they are denied access to.
If the individual stats remain annonymous why would people opt out if the net result is that TiVo goes out of business and you are stuck with a box with no service. I personaly don't care and to be honest I thought they were doing this all along.
If everything ran in its own little box and didn't have to communicate with anything else we would be alot better off. That's good advice for people too. Just go home, lock the doors, turn off the lights, be quiet and never come out.
You're walking down a dark alley at 3am. Suddenly the HUD in your glasses displays PROXIMITY WARNING!! You whisper "Hull plating to maximum. Legs... evasive maneuvers". You take a hit to your hind quarter but your assailant loses his impulse manifold giving you the opportunity to make your escape. You emerge from the alley unscathed. Condition Green.

Yup, this has been the only stumbling block for me to move from Linux to Windows XP .... That and it costing money.
Hmmm, I wonder if they'll need a Unix admin. :-)

The ARMY has live soldiers and dead soldiers
Binary has 8 bits to a byte, DNA has 3 nucleotides to a codon.
The ARMY has 8 to 10 soldiers to a squad.
Computers and biology seem to have a natural fit;
The ARMY also seems to fit the computer model using the same criteria. Does that make it a computer?
Boss: How is that <insert latest project here> coming?
Me: Oh, I'm almost done
My Brain: Mental note. Start that damn project
Ahhh, I see. The Microsoft development model. "The first screen came up... SHIP IT!!!"

piracy: (noun)
3 : the unauthorized use of another's production, invention, or conception especially in infringement of a copyright

Just make an aluminum-foil hat for your car. Seems easy enough to me. :-)

Cool, half a soccer field. So they can ... play with themselves?
I SAID BE QUIET!
the nodes started competing with each other and yelling "w00t w00t". In the end no work got done.
