    For me it is a matter of independence. It is nice to be able to say if the things I take for granted were suddenly not available in the event of nukes or asteroids that I would still be self sufficient.

    Graduate students are wasting 3 years of their lives soldering and repairing robots, instead of making them smart.

    So hire and pay them money so they do real research instead of having fun. Otherwise quit your bitchin'. I personally think building stupid robots is cool.

    I watched a couple of episodes of junkyard wars and the word that comes to mind is lame. They couldn't build half the stuff they do if they only used junk. They have to seed the junk with things like working hydrolics, rocket motors, etc. Junkyard wars is as fake as the WWF. The A-Team was able to build cool stuff out of junk, but then that was fiction, and reality is boring.

    So go with Sun or Linux for networking gear. IMNSHO Solaris and IPFilter makes the best firewall anyway. Linux has good support in other areas such as 802.1Q spanning tree bridging and other neat tidbits. If the technology is open there is no where to hide.

    I've had 6 Solaris boxes in the Internet with no firewall for over 2 years now with no break ins. It's not rocket science. Packet filters and chrooted services go a long way.
