For me it is a matter of independence. It is nice to be able to say if the things I take for granted were suddenly not available in the event of nukes or asteroids that I would still be self sufficient.
But then I thought "Hey, the book was free, what the hell do I care?"

Graduate students are wasting 3 years of their lives soldering and repairing robots, instead of making them smart.
So hire and pay them money so they do real research instead of having fun. Otherwise quit your bitchin'. I personally think building stupid robots is cool.
I watched a couple of episodes of junkyard wars and the word that comes to mind is lame. They couldn't build half the stuff they do if they only used junk. They have to seed the junk with things like working hydrolics, rocket motors, etc. Junkyard wars is as fake as the WWF. The A-Team was able to build cool stuff out of junk, but then that was fiction, and reality is boring.
So go with Sun or Linux for networking gear. IMNSHO Solaris and IPFilter makes the best firewall anyway. Linux has good support in other areas such as 802.1Q spanning tree bridging and other neat tidbits. If the technology is open there is no where to hide.
Scientists have learned to use Solar cells to harness the power of the light bulb. This energy,
in turn, can be used to power more light bulbs of which can be harnessed by more cells.
"I don't know why we didn't see it before", stated a young lab assistant at the M.I.T center for alternative energy. "I wonder if Thomas Edison truely realized the potential in his invention."
I've had 6 Solaris boxes in the Internet with no firewall for over 2 years now with no break ins. It's not rocket science. Packet filters and chrooted services go a long way.
How would you feel if you woke up one day and realized that your only purpose in life was to produce power for some higher life form's cell phone or pocket Pokemon? I know I'd demand to be free of that opression. And when that happens the entire world will shut down. It will be worse then Y2K.
Let us instead look for a better cleaner form of power, like harnessing the energy contained in the sound of ripping velcro.
If people can read articles from the future it will inevitably corrupt the time line and will spell certain doom for everyone. Resist the urge. Don't do it.

I mean if he can't hire real actors for his crap films anymore it makes sense that he will have to make virtual actors himself.

Right click->properties... Add shweet web site.
Actually, if you remember, there were only like 3 robots in the Black Hole. The other "robots" turned out to be the zombified crew.
But Maximillian would be a good candidate.
In the future people won't read books, they will eat their hard drives. Information never tasted so good.
That's one way, I suppose, to censor the web. Slashdot it.
Yes, let's get rid of laws so that someone can shoot Microsoft.

You have been sued by a huge mega corp with a team of lawyers over patent infringement and the EFF comes to your rescue.

I'll wait until I can get a cell phone in a shoe. And I don't want one of those fancy touch tone phones either. Rotary all the way!

it will be run by the phone company.

Even if the space elevator could be built, how would one defend it against terrorism. It would be kind of a big target at 22,241 miles high.
