  1. Dark Energy doesn't mean Heat Death on NASA: Evidence Favors Infinitely Expanding Universe · · Score: 1

We will eventually find a way to tap into Dark Energy, just as we have with every other energy source. We will then build big honkin' SUVs that convert Dark Energy into smog. We will then use up all of the Dark Energy until it no longer has an influence on the expansion of the Universe. The Universe then dies with a big crunch (not unlike a tasty Dorito)

Why don't DNS servers have a list of correct top-level domains, in order to answer directly, without going to a root server?

This is actually an excellent idea and one that people who use opennic do already. The root zone "." at OpenNIC is setup to be slaved so my DNS server downloads a copy of the root zone which has all the information for all the top level domains. If the root zones get DOSed I don't care because I don't use them anymore. Everyone should use OpenNIC. It is the Internet friendly thing to do. :)

If you're referring to the Republican party, then I think you're a bit off base.

I read "Republican Nation" as not a Nation run by "The Republicans" but a Nation that is a Republic, as opposed to a Democracy, which of course we are. A Democracy is a country that is run by the people. We actually have a Republic which is run by people we elect because we are to stupid to pass our own laws.

Which of course we are. Two years ago here in Massachusettes there was a referendum question for "Clean Elections" campaign finance. It set aside tax dollars to go to candidates for campaigning who met certain criteria. However, the legislature decided that the people really didn't understand the ballot question and didn't know what they were voting for. So they didn't fund the law and the media got all up in arms that the government wasn't doing what the people wanted. Fast forward to today. Another question that repealed this law went on the ballot and was worded such that it was clear that tax dollars were to be spent on it. This also passed overwhelmingly. Turned out the stage Leg. was right in deciding that we the people didn't know what the hell we were doing.

However, I do know that I don't like these copyright laws. What can we do to fix it?

Unfortunately keeping up with patches is a very important part of any security strategy. I am all for letting companies do things their way, but if admins don't allocate more time to security and patching then I'm afraid the government will do more than just recommend actions for Security on the Internet and will start mandating stuff. I for one don't want that to happen.

Bottom line? Improve your security while you still have the rights to do it yourself.

  17. Weird misconception on Due Diligence? · · Score: 5, Insightful
I find that other admins patch by necessity. i.e. If something is broke, then patch it. If not leave it alone.

However, I read a stat somewhere that said that a large majority of security breaches could have been prevented by merely keeping up with patches. Therefore my philosphy is to create a patch schedule. And because I'm on Solaris things like OpenSSL are 3rd party to the OS, therefore I upgrade immediately. I rebuilt my solaris RPMs of OpenSSL that day and had it deployed to all my machines. Other things like GnuPG, IPFilter, OpenSSH, apache, sendmail, etc... they all need to be upgraded ASAP.

So all you Slashdot readers who posted that you have nothing to do but read Slashdot in that downsizing article, get off your butts and start patching. That should keep you busy full time.

Then you move on to Motif and it only takes you 6 months. Then you move on to Qt and it only takes 3 hours. Of course you want it to look slick so you use kdelibs.
