    I know most people are in love with the GPL
    but the government stuff is free...id rather just let users use it free while ensuring that it was not appropriated or falsely credited to a private company.

    This is probably the most thoughtful and grownup
    post Ive seen in a while in slashdot. We dont need a bunch of slashdotters being their own anal retentive fathers. What the kid needs is career counseling, and honest testing.

    Being a CS/CSE grad doesnt make you a genius or a jedi. Its quite possible this kid is the real thing, its also possible he has overblown ego or a little bit of both.

    I had a 1.8 GPA in high school. I hated high school, but my GPA as was in college kept going up.

    The real secret this kid needs to do, is find something he likes to do that he can make money at.
    Whether hes a genius with ADD or just an aimless kid.

    18 of them are the Kde games
    7 of them are the L games
    4 of them are tux games
    1 of them is Penguin command

    32 of 118 games listed are not shrinkwrap
    they are just freebie games.

    Here are the facts...linux has a long way to go before it can be a serious game platform. It needs a fully supported 3d engine and a unifed installer/uninstaller for all extensions supported.

    This is not fud, I have a Fedora core 2 box at home.

    doesnt really count for linux anymore than solitaire or minesweeeper counts for windows.

    Do you want to know when Linux games will finally
    breakout...its when

    A) 3d Video and sound works as reliably on Linux as it does on Mac or Windows
    b) When the installation process for installing a linux game involves sticking in a cd and clicking I-agree-next--typical install-next-next-finished
    c) When Linux has a unified installation interface for programs regardless of extension.

    At 8 hours a day of active use thats 7 years for a CRT. 7 years is beyond what most computers last versus 3 1/2 for LCD/ OLED which means you might have to replace the monitor while you still have the computer.

    My Phillips 19" crt does 1900x1440 and cost about $250 new two years ago...so unless you need desk space...I really dont see why LCD monitors are so hot.

    The actual complete quote is saying that open source paranoia and nuttiness is a GOOD thing
    and notice the word "often" which is not in the slashdot posters quote. It changes the tone and the facts of the article.

    translucent windows. Its a system where windows become more translucent as time goes on, and you can actually work with the window underneath.

    This is not obvious, and simply having windows that are translucent probably not violate this patent.

    Translucency is simply a color modification is not patentable. What they are talking about is a process for adaptive translucent windows that alter not just appearance but condition as well.

    That being said...most software patents suck.

    In India... middle class parents love brilliant children and spoil them rotten even into adulthood so the linux campaign works very well there.

    However in arab muslim cultures parents want children to be dutiful and respect their elders, so the idea of some uberchild prodigy leaves them cold.

    Itunes maybe drm but they consistently have the most generous terms and usage limits. They also are reasonably priced. They put out a good product at a fair price...and they dont charge subscriptions. They are also the only paid song program for Mac users.

    Itunes is a good thing , and if you hack their songs without paying you are a thief. It is not like Kazaa where you might say there is no victim, Itunes is based on selling its product,and if Itunes fails mac users are screwed.

    If there is someday an Itunes for Linux are you going to hack that until it dies too?

    Imagine if someone came up with a VR desktop for linux that would work with those 3d goggles...you would finally have something jaw dropping to talk about that would be really cool. Instead of a clunky mouse, use a goggle to grab your windows with get this ...handles...not some silly virtual hand like in the olden crappy vr days...combine that with a virtual keyboard and youve really got something.

    The Federal government might have a pretty good case for Eminent Domain.

    Those labs are multibillion dollar projects.
    The value of the unix source code is not more than the fair market value of the company (ie $300 million dollars) , so the feds could easily begin eminent domain proceedings against SCO in which the US government would take the Unix source code in exchange for fair market value.

    Considering the massive use of Linux in federally funded schools, colleges and universities, settling the IP question once and for all would be worth it.
    Then the federal government could treat the unix source code as a public document.

    Im sure Microsoft would whine but its good public policy to preserve a competitive market.

    IF they are willing to pay $40k in india, why not move to india and live like a king? Getting a visa may be a challenge but a few bucks in the right places can grease wheels.

    For $40k a year in india...you could have your own place, a full time maid,nanny,gardener and bollywood quality mistress.

    MAny of the indian programmers speak english and would more happily work for an American programmer who knows what they are doing and can teach them good programming than some boss who got the job because they are the big bosses golfing partner.

    It would be interesting to find a shareholder of baystar that opposes the SCO investment, and get them to sue baystar for an investment that is a conflict of interest and not in the best interest of that fund.

    baystar is making investments based on outside concerns and not the fidicuciary interests of their shareholders.
