So.. I was kind of excited hoping I could see this exploit work.
I mostly run gentoo...
x86_64 gentoo build: no go. x86 hardended kernel, gentoo: no go.
I thought it was the 64 bit that was giving it problems since my laptop and tower are both 64bit builds. So far I can't seem to get it to work, so it might be a default that's enabled in certain kernels. I'm sure I disabled virtualization since I see no use of it right now.
So, sadly, I couldn't get the exploit to work.:( good luck to everyone that has patching to do.
Europe over all and I believe Asia as well is kicking our ass as far as bandwidth. We've been stagnant at around 6-10mbps for broadband/dsl. Overseas they've got some damn nice speeds going on. (which kinda begs the question, why bother with a T1 anymore when you can get 100mbsp ).
Kinda why IPTV is not taking off in the US yet, we don't have the infrastructure to support it. Once our bandwidth goes up, just imagine, live TV on your laptop.. through wifi mmmm.. i'll never had to get up again.
I will try emacs once they provide me two foot pedals that allow me to actually make that damn app work. I'm biased towards VI as far as editors go. there are some feature i wish vi would have that emacs does have. But unless i grow two more arms, I find that application ridiculously difficult to control.
Now.. here's something that did bug me. Luke lost his hand to Darth Vader in Episode IV? or was it V.. anyways.. he loses his hand.. and he gets a nice little replacement where you can't tell the fake apart from his real one?
his dad gets a hand transplant.. and it looks like he's carrying a brick.
I thought the explanation for the Prequels having better visual effects was that the clone wars destroyed much of the technology.. so episode 4,5,6 had worse technologies then ep. 1,2,3... why exactly does Darth Vader get jipped.. aside from the fact that he's the bad guy.
you gotta pick one.. do they have better.. or worse technologies.
Alien.
I'm sorry.. but am I missing something? I know there aren't nearly as many linux games as i'd like but come on... there's some good ones out for linux.
Doom3? anyone heard of that... i hear it was popular at one time... UT2003, UT2k, Quake...
Tux Racer? I'm sure there are many more... these are just the ones i can think off of the top of my head.
Hell if i'm not mistaken Doom 3 runs faster/better on Linux then it does on XP machines.
Besides.. i love having a machine that's not a spyware/virus haven. and If you insist on buying a mac.. how about dual booting.. you have 2 clean OSes. The one thing that you get with linux..
1. it's free.... 2. you dont have to replace your hardware.. turn your virus haven.. it's a clean useable computer....
not sure about macs.. but i have a windows network with XP machines.. the only thing a user can write to is their Local Profile.
They can't modify the registery or run any program that alters files it shouldn't. Hence it's secure.. unless the user needs to run some 3rd party junky app written for win95 which doesn't understand user rights and demands Adminis. privelages, hence circumventing the whole security policy...... that's where deep freeze comes in.
now given I had already taken calc I in h.s. so I was better off then most people, but I ended up only having to take 1 math class (calc II ) and a stats class.
personally, I wish we had much higher math requirement. Heck, looking at the math classes I wanted to take, I would almost end up with a math minor.
If you end up in a field having to do with crypto, graphics, or AI you absolutely need a strong math background.
Might be just me....but isn't the idea of an athletic geek somewhat of an oxymoron.
Can you imagine bill gates in super tight spnadex shorts jogging along in your neighborhood? *shiver*.... ergh... i'm getting shivers just writting this down.
thankfully he can afford his own running track and spares all of us the view (if he runs at all)
anyhoo.. my 2 cents and msft bashing...
not exactly sure what happened, but the first movie was absolutely horendous. They took a cult classic and butchered it to death.
but long live tux, and as long as he gets his hands in the project, it's all good. Might even suffer through the flic.
this is beyond premature....
I doubt we even have the technology for this. besides, we can barely terraform the earth. Let alone mars.
(most deserts are still expanding lil by lil every yearr. How about we do something about that, among hundrerds of earthly projects instead of worrying about Mars. Well teraforming mars anyway)

I dunno, the floating glass from the very brief video I saw on it looked kinda interesting. At least the idea of flipping a window over and attaching a post it seems kinda kewl. At some point we will need to get away from the 2d desktops. I'm sure they'll be a bunch of f*** ups, but i'd luv to see what the end result will be.
Gimp's floating windows are annoying...but at least it doesn't have that hefty 500 dollar price tag attached.
anything that has no DVD drive, probably can't handle 13 CDs worth of data either.
and If you have a computer with.. (let's say 13 CDs at 650 comes just under 10 gb plus compression, let's say 20 gb)
I would still say u can afford the 30 bucks for a DVD drive.
or NFS.
I wholehearthedly agree. We need DVD ISOs. make 2 DVD ISOs available for the masses, much more convenient then download 13 freaking ISOs.
here's another question, I'm just curious...what exactly is there to put on 13 cds. Most distro dont come even close. Full retail of most distro dont go over 5-6 CDs and that's including source.
Alien.
But I would have much rather learned Linux x86 assembler or any x86 assembler then the MVS IBM Mainframe Assembler (os/390) which I was forced to learn.
ASM does give you a good basis for understanding low level machines. But the x86 at least has the remote possibility of being useful.
If i'm not mistaken, x86 assembler comes in handy in graphics/game coding (though it's starting to get fased out by extremly efficient graphic libs)
anyhoo...my 2cents.
asm is a good idea, but I wouldn't start out incoming freshmen on it. (unless you enjoy seeing horified traumatized young men screaming in terror....on second though, start out with ASM)
Sorry if this is a bit off topic.
But how exactly is this worm spreading through email, is it AGAIN an outlook issue, or does it affect all email clients?
Alien.
I say they go out in a blaze of glory.. hire some half-decent writers and incoporate the other Star Treks in it.
ie. Enterprise travels to the future, meets captain Janeway or some futuristic twist. Go out with a nice bang. Once you're done....
Scrap Enterprise, and write a decent Star Trek. It has been done before, I'm sure someone can write one. The current Start Treck has been a disappointment (to me anyways) from the beginning.
but why not ship those 64-bit cpu machiens with Linux. They might even be able to lower their prices enough to put in some decent hardware in there... (and avoid their well earned reputation of being some incredibly crappy machines).
Though I gotta say, these recent threads impress me. They should have some impressive hardware for the $$$, not sure how long they would last though.
I keep hearing about all the great god-like features of Postgres....but what exactly can Postgres do that mysql can't? i'm going towards setting up a central database (MySQL) linux server at work which will be accessible via Ms. Access using an ODBC driver from the clients. (ie. client running Msft Access changes data on a mysql database on a linux server, easy enough to use gui and a strong enough backend)
So far, i'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. nothing too complicated database wise. What exactly would be the advantage of using Postgres.
my first computer was a 486dx2 packard hell.....and i can't say that it was a fond memory....Installing Linux on it was a nightmare....and I had so many issues with it, i can't even count. (Linux or otherwise)
though I gotta say, I still like it better then any emachine I had the misfortune of touching.
okay... the idea of a trucker programmer is just freaking eery, I can't even picture it (or at least dont want to).
and if "computer talk is cool", i know hell just froze over. I'm a geek damn it... computer talk is dorky and geeky and i'm proud to be both.
now the really sad part is, I've met some coders working on their masters (i'm using the term coder very loosly here) who can't figure out how to do the simplest most basic debuggin on windows.
(now mind you, I said windows... linux i could understand...but if u can't figure out how to configure dial in windows and you're working on your masters.... that's just wrong...)
I probably could go on for ages...(i unfotunately went to a school that still teaches cobol and i'm still quiet bitter about the fact that i've been forcebly truned into one...erghhh.... )
Just Curious... but what exactly is the advantage of running winamp on Linux.
Doesn't xmms have most of the features of winamp already?
besides, as far as porting windows appz to linux, i'd be more interested in getting Dreamweaver MX running on my precious SuSe (among other macromedia/adobe/msft products)
So.. I was kind of excited hoping I could see this exploit work.

speaking of CrossOver... what exactly is the latest version.. i have 2.0 and both mx and flash are giving me issues (SuSe 9)
I believe the gray shade by the bullet is a OO issue. Everytime i've used bullets in OO i've had that effect.
They might have fixed it in the newer versions.
