  6. You're missing the point on ReactOS Runs On The XBox · · Score: 3, Insightful

The point with ReactOS isn't to keep up with the latest and greatest. ReactOS with full NT4 compatibility will have a function in many offfices, that still have a huge NT4 presence, but are find that they are coming to the end of their support life cycle with Microsoft. ReactOS would squeeze a little more life out of their systems, and would also provide an easier upgrade path to a straight Linux system than simply going Windows --> Linux.

Home users are a different breed to corporate users, and tend to want the latest version of an OS. Of course, ReactOS is in no position to compete with XP, but wouldn't we be hoping that rather than chosing Windows XP, home users will eventually be installing one of the multitude of distros available?

What's equally surprising is that it's not as if Apple haven't had their share of trademark issues with the record label of the same name owned by The Beatles.

"DOS style attack"? Hardly - it actively monitors the servers to prevent them going off line. A DOS attack goes all out to take a server down.

All Lycos is doing is send hits out to slow down a server. How is that different to posting a link in a news article in Slashdot? We all know that will get slashdotted, yet links are still posted. In both Lycos' and Slashdot's cases, something deliberate is done which causes a degredation in server perfomance. I don't see how it's any more of a DOS style attack than slashdotting a site.

Microsoft are recognising the competition here because it potentially earns them revenue by selling a quantity of legit versions of XP. 18. Re:One monopoly down on AMD Desktops Outsell Intel · · Score: 2, Interesting

The thing about monopolies is that, as in a business sense, it's the equivilent of launching the space shuttle at the end of Civilisation - you win, you achieved the ultimate goal, and every company wants to be in that place.

Therefore, behind a monopoly, there's always another monopoly watching and waiting in the shadows, looking to take over from the popular and dominant market force. For example:

    Microsoft (Apple)
    Intel (AMD)
    Nvidia (ATI)
    iTunes (Napster)
    IBM (Sun)
    Gnome (KDE)

They'll tell you that they wouldn't ever want to be a monopoly, but it's poppycock - the whole principles of business are based on monopoly.

  19. Re:Good to hear! on AMD Desktops Outsell Intel · · Score: 4, Informative

ATI mainly outsold Nvidia because of Nvidia's shoddy manufacturing of early Geforce 5 series cards - poor drivers, drivers that lied, and late to market hardware that looked distinctly weak by the time it was public. This was a direct mirror of the emergence of Nvidia over 3DFX as a major graphics card force a few years ealier, with the exception that this time around, Nvidia had a lot greater cash reserve than 3DFX ever did, so could actually afford to make the mistake.

As it is, I'd be very surprised to find out that the ATI share was more than 55/45 in their favor (remember - a LOT of people outside of hardcord gamer circles are still using early Geforce / TNT cards - I have even seen Geforce 2 *MX* cards still being sold as low cost no frills acceleration) and with the new 6600 cards coming out, this is going to be a firm kick to the nether regions of ATI. There just isn't a card on the market that can hold a candle to it, and when you combine this with Nvidia's far superior Doom 3 performance, I'd certainly not bet against Nvidia becoming a dominant 3D acceleration force over the next few years.

First thing I did when I saw this article was shudder. Why? The majority of problems I've ever had with XP have been with the shoddy implementation of a Hardware Abstraction Layer, and the associated problems that an 'all your eggs in one basket' approach can bring you. You can see for yourself: Just Google for 'Missing Hal.DLL' and you'll see just how easy it is for this file to be corrupted / disappear etc etc.

BUT.... How can the monopolies commission come down like a ton of bricks on Microsoft for locking people into a technology, when the only way you can legally download music for the iPod is through iTunes? Surely by not licensing their DRM technology, Apple are creating an equal monopoly for the vast number of iTunes users out there?

    2) Heat, heat and heat! From the pictures, that case doesn't appear to be particularly well ventilated, and there just can't be the room in there for a decent fan airflow. Pop a half-decent graphics card in there, play highly intensive games, wait a year and a half, and you have a potential fiasco on your hands. No matter how pretty a box looks, I would never buy it if I didn't think it could practically ensure a prelonged period of intensive use.
