Sorry there bud. I have to disagree. Whenever I've gotten mod points, I've modded up comments like that because they need to be seen. However, as I've been saying in this thread... if you take away monetary incentive (which people like Roland and Beatles Beatles post for) then you eliminate the problem. NO ONE should be able to profit from submitting and getting a story accepted. The only thing you should get in return is the knowledge that you've shared valuable information with your fellow reader. Fame, money, girls, etc... should all be left to REAL work: building or designing stuff, cooking, or cleaning for example.

There's nothing wrong with a submitter becoming well known. That's not the issue. The issue is that they stand to make money by getting their submissions accepted. Take that away, and you get rid of the problem. If the person is still willing to post without the monetary incentive, then they belong in the community. If not, they can leave.

Personal benefit is the problem. No one should benefit personally in a community driven environment. The only reasons to submit stories are to share information with other people. I should get NOTHING in return other than knowing that others of a like mind enjoyed the submission if it was accepted. As soon as an individual stands to gain something (especially if it can translate to money) the system becomes vulnerable to abuse. If you can't contribute something with nothing in return, then you don't belong in a community.

  9. Hmmm... OK Weirdo Question For Sure... on PC FM Tuner Streamed Over a LAN? · · Score: 1

FM audio is pretty low quality to begin with. The compression that stations use (audio engineering compression, not data) tends to bollocks up the sound compared to what you hear from a CD. So I don't see how web radio is much different. The streams online are the equivalent of FM in most cases with the exception of talk radio where you don't need quality (in either content or audio integrity ;P ). But in answer to your question, I would say look for a tuner that is supported by the ALSA project. As long as that tuner's radio signal can be read from /dev, you should be fine. Then use the Xine media player with its --broadcast option to broadcast the audio stream to any other Xine player on your network.

There is a HUGE difference between some hack sitting in a production house cranking out quick riffs and on-hold music and someone who has real talent (like Fripp) making good sounds. Keep in mind that talent != fame. There are some true artists that you will never hear of because they don't have a way for their music to be heard. Fripp, however is a talented guy. So Microsoft did something right with this. System sounds are an essential part of the user experience and people who turn them off only do so because the sounds were poorly produced and are therefore unpleasant, or they don't know any better.

And I think it's STUPID to execute a command at shutdown to reload your boot loader. You SHOULD have to do that. It should just know when you've made a change and do it. Finally, going into single user mode is EASIER with GRUB than LILO. Just do this:

    e
down arrow to the kernel line
right arrow to the end and type '1'
    enter
    b

Simple as pie. None of that idiotic mucking about booting with a boot floppy to edit the /etc/lilo.conf file and rebooting as it says to do in the man pages. I shouldn't have to boot to change my boot configuration! It should be done IN the boot loader itself!!

And Tuesday is about one hour and thirteen minutes from ending where I am so I'll likely have a different point of view tomorrow. But, I truly like GRUB and despise LILO. Not to mention GRUB is prettier than LILO since it can actually do framebuffer graphics rather than the lame ass VGA. Once there was a village in the country. The people were happy. The village was nice. In general things were pretty good. Then one day a man in the village discovered a deep dark hole just outside of the village. He yelled into it and was surprised that his voice did not echo back. He called a few others who also wondered at the discovery. Soon it was decided that the hole should be inspected further and people gathered the tools to do so. The first test was to yell "hello" as lous as possible and listen for an echo carefully. This failed. The next test was to throw a stone into the hole and listen for it to hit the bottom. This was done, but no sound was ever heard. The next test was to drop something more substantial into the hole and listen for it to hit bottom. Again, nothing was heard. More tests followed until...

It was decided that the hole was the perfect place for the village's rubbish to be disposed of. Day after day, week after week and year after year, they continued to throw their litter into the hole. Until one day many many years later, the man who discovered the hole heard a voice call from above just outside his home, "Hellllo". He was startled but ignored it. The next day he heard another voice calling followed by a small stone hitting the ground near him. It was then that he realized what had happened and wished he'd never found the hole outside of the village.

...if you use computers to make money, you're in the minority. Just check out my profile for more on that wisdom. The people who really make proper use of computers are people at home using them for creative endeavours that will never see a dime. People who use them to make music, print artistic photos, or even write their own *FREE* (in both senses) software are the people who make proper use of a computer. Anyone using it to try and turn a profit is just a talentless hack who thinks of a PC as a money making machine. If, and only if, you HAPPEN to make a profit doing something creative with a PC whilst actually doing the creative part out of love rather than avarice, then you are properly using your computer. This means that if you are a web designer who creates web sites because you like to and you would do it for free, then you're doing it right. The fact that people might pay you is incidental and vastly unimportant. That's the way I work with audio and music production on my computers. I love doing that work, so I do it for people at no cost. However, 99% of the time they demand that I charge them something and my asking prices tend to be low. So even there, they might force me to charge more. Case in point. I did some very simple photo editing for a friend of a friend recently. It took me about an hour and a half to do the actual work and my computer about 15 minutes to save out a postscript print file for large format printing. I told the guy I would only charge $10 an hour because that's all that photo editing work is worth. He disagreed and when he saw the results he paid me $50 an hour. I told him he didn't need to, but he insisted and thus I got a little over $50 when all was said a done. A nice surprise but completely unwarranted. Digital photo editing is not hard, it's not a skill and certainly doesn't call for that kind of pay.

All those businesses with their IT departments are doing a disservice to computers. The industry seems to have largely forgotten that computers are simply a tool and only useful when in skilled hands. And skilled hands do not equate to profit, they equate to talent and a love of the craft. That is the ONLY reason to work with computers. Making money is simply a side benefit and a highly overrated one at that.
